Layout Guide: Designing a Living Room with Slanted Walls
In our Layout Guides series you’ll find layout solutions for rooms of all shapes and sizes. This week we take on the challenge of designing an oddly-shaped living room with slanted walls.
The Space: A 10×15 living room with a quirky, awkward shape with slanted walls that create lots of hard-to-handle nooks and crannies.
The Style: Modern and edgy
The Challenge: Designing an oddly shaped living room with slanted walls to make a comfortable space for lounging, working, playing and watching TV.
Idea #1: Conversational Layout
Living room layout #1 is all about creating a space with flexible seating. Using a sofa + armchair combo gives you more versatility in your seating arrangement. It incorporates the TV with the sofa facing it for easy viewing, but it isn’t the main focus of the layout. Overall, the seating flexibility creates a cozy space that allows for an optional work area and room to entertain.
Here’s Why This Living Room Layout Works
Ample Seating
Having both a sofa and an armchair means there is lots of cozy lounge space for getting comfy and watching TV. The two poufs offer even more flexible seating or easy footstools for kicking back and relaxing.
Space to Work
Instead of a side table next to the sofa, this design features a mini desk set up for a super sweet home office working space. The desk has casters so you can easily wheel it in and out of the room if you need more open space for entertaining.
Fills Out Nooks
This design uses one awkward corner as a place for plants to sunbathe. This not only brightens up the space, but also helps fill out the oddly shaped nook without drawing attention to the awkward angle. Having the armchair pulled out from the wall at a slant helps to better define and fill the space.
Clutter-Free
The wall-mounted bookcase adds extra vertical storage so you can stow various items without cluttering up the room. Open base furniture on tapered legs helps the room feel more open and airy, too.
This Is Great If You…
- Want a comfy living room with plenty of extra seating.
- Enjoy the option to watch TV, but don’t want it as the focal point.
- Love to entertain guests and want a space that can easily make room for more visitors.
- Like having a desk / workspace in the living room.
- Love a clean, edgy and clutter-free space.
Idea #2: Family-Friendly Layout
Layout Idea #2 puts the emphasis more on creating a casual, family-friendly place to lounge, play, and watch TV. The sectional allows for more room to sit in front of the TV and the remaining space makes a perfect play area for kids.
Here’s Why This Living Room Layout Works
TV Viewing Space
In this design, the seating is super comfy and geared toward watching TV and lounging. The sectional sofa offers plenty of room in front of the television and the chaise part of the sectional helps divide the room and almost acts like a partition between two spaces.
Perfect Play Area
With the back of the chaise sectional facing a slanted wall, it creates a perfect play space for little ones! The triangular space makes a super cozy nook with a bookcase for easy toy storage. A playful elephant rug helps define and round out the space and also works well with the awkward shape caused by the slanted wall.
Functional and Fun
The round coffee tables are a more kid-friendly option as there are no sharp corners to navigate. Your whole family also has plenty of room to stretch out on the sofa and space to move around. Plus, the arching floor lamp is a sleek way to add overhead lighting to the room if you don’t have a built-in fixture.
This Is Great If You…
- Need cozy seating for TV viewing.
- Want a fun play area for little ones.
- Prefer a family-friendly space over an entertaining area.
- Hate clutter and want a space that’s streamlined and easy to tidy up.
