Bringing Hygge to Your Bedroom

Because you all loved our original hygge living room, we decided to kick it up a notch and bring hygge into the whole house!

Hygge, the Danish concept of living cozily, is the talk of the town this Winter. More than a way to decorate your home, hygge (pronounced hoo-gah) is about slowing down, taking stock, and creating a sense of comfort and simplicity. Plush sofas, pillows galore, natural materials, and softly glowing candles are key to building your perfect hygge hideaway.

hygge bedroom

Designing your home with hygge at the helm, fosters the kid of cozy, warmth that helps make people happier. To help get you started, we transformed this simple studio apartment into the perfect hygge hideaway.

Here’s how you hygge…

hygge bedroom

  • Build a simple base: Start with the largest pieces of furniture in the room, these is the base of your hygge hideaway. Your bed or sofa lay the foundation of your design, so look for pieces with clean lines to let the accessories shine. We like the Piper Bed Frame from Room & Board and the Modular Cloud Sofa from Restoration Hardware.
  • Keep it neutral: Hygge is all about keeping it calm. Limit colors to the accessories and opt for soft shades of beige, cream, grey, and brown.
  • Go natural: Organic pieces give texture to your environment and lend warmth to the space. Look for jute, animal hide, unfinished woods, wool, and sheepskin. We love the Natural Cowhide Rug (Cowhide Imports) and the Acacia Storage Bench (CB2).

  • Add texture: Now it’s time for the fun part, let’s add some texture to the mix. Look for chunky, fluffy, soft… in a variety of fabrics and materials like a palooza of patterned pillows that are scattered throughout the room (even on the floor). Artwork can add texture too! We chose pieces with organic patterns, like the Peaceful Dot series from Natural Curiosities. Even the Woven Wall Decor above the bed (Urban Outfitters) adds a textural pop with its woven nubby wool.
  • Layer it up: Our final tip for getting your hygge on, is to pile on layers. Layer rugs, pillows, and artwork everywhere to give your space texture and coziness. We like the pop of pattern the Boldstripe Dhurrie Rug (Anthropologie) gives layered on the Chunky Wool & Jute Rug (Pottery Barn)

Now all that’s left is to light some candles, brew up some coffee or tea, and slip into your comfiest PJ’s. Welcome to your hygge-filled home! We hope you never want to leave.

The Hygge Bedroom Collection

A Hygge Hideaway

Step inside our cozy hygge hideaway, and you can immediately smell the cookies baking and hear the crackle of the fire. Piles of pillows abound, plush comfy furniture offers itself as a cozy seat for snuggling up, and the floor is covered in layers of rugs and even more pillows. Harsh overhead lighting is forgone in lieu of glowing candles and twinkling string lights, and tranquil scenes of pastures and cottages hang on the walls. A gathering space for friends and family, we designed this room with the Danish concept of hygge as our inspiration.

We decided to show, rather than tell, what hygge is, and we also wanted to leave space for the concept to explain itself. Here’s hygge, in its own words….

Imagine if every time you walked into your living room it gave you a big hug. A hug that also swaddled you in chunky knit blankets with real, live puppies and placed a steamy cup of hot cocoa in your hands. That’s me, Hygge, and it’s oh so lovely to meet you!

“Who in the world is hygge?” you might be asking. That’s one of my favorite questions! (Oh, and I pronounce it “HOO-guh”) I’m not a person, I’m not a place, and I’m not really a thing either. I’m also not super flattered by being called a “lifestyle trend,” because I really hope you keep me around longer than your juice cleanse or your obsession with Pokemon Go.

I like to fancy myself more of a way of being, or a mindset of coziness that permeates Danish culture. I’ve been around for quite some time now, but it is only recently that I became so popular in the US (although the notion of ‘popularity’ isn’t high on my priority list, because I want to be everyone’s friend). I prefer slowing down, savoring the moment, and promoting a sense of well-being and connection. Ahhh… I’m feeling all warm and fuzzy just talking about it!

In case the next question percolating in your beautiful brain is “Where did you come from?” I have an answer for you! I am the proud descendant of the 16th century Norwegian term “hugga,” which means to comfort, or to console. Kind of similar to your English word “hug.” How wonderful!

Leaving behind some pointers to give us guidance, Hygge is happy to inhabit any home upon invitation. Peep the checklist below to learn how to invite Hygge into your space!

Hygge Home Checklist:

  • Warmth and light – Turn off the overhead lights, light a fire in the fireplace, string up some lights, and top it off with some lovely candles.
  • Get cozy and fuzzy – layered rugs, pillows galore (even on the floor), and blankets for days are my favorite tricks for adding a dose of coziness to any space. I especially love plush rugs and all things sheepskin!
  • Keep it neutral and natural – I’m not neutral when it comes to my stance on color palette. I love an earthy palette because it fosters a calming environment. No bright colors please! I also prefer natural materials and finishes for the same reason. This should be a tactile environment that delights all the senses.

A Spanish Colonial Revival Home Tour: The Granada Collection

space_2098_design_1_000_modcam_001_test_000-vraydenoiser-copy

Freshly back from a trip to Granada, the tranquil city in southern Spain, we found ourselves struck by a case of the “post-vacation blues.” Rather than toting home souvenir keychains or t-shirts to remind us of our travels, we decided to bring our vacation home with us in the form of interior inspiration.

When you step inside this Spanish Colonial revival bungalow, you will find a warm and inviting living space comprised of whitewashed walls, natural woods, neutral fabrics, pops of bold color, and Moorish touches. Our vision came from the rich heritage of Islamic influence in Andalucia region of Spain, especially evident in Granada’s magnificent “palace-city” Alhambra.

space_2098_design_1_000_modcam_004_v02-copy

As such, this is an interior heavily inspired by architecture, particularly that of the Alhambra’s Salön de Comares with its splendidly delicate marquetry ceiling. Comprised of over eight thousand individual pieces of cedarwood, the ceiling is an architectural and artistic marvel.

space_2098_design_1_000_modcam_003_v02-copy

To incorporate this aesthetic into our bungalow, we started with a neutral base of hearty and inviting furniture. We then layered in accessories and accents with a distinctly Alhambra-esque aesthetic. Geometry is the star of the show. Look for pieces with lots of pattern, intricately carved wood, and tesselated mosaic tiles. Natural materials should abound: opt for wood, marble, linen, wool, and gold to keep the environment feeling organic. And, finally, choose accessories with vibrant colors that skew towards the primaries to keep the space feeling warm and invigorated.

Cabin in the Holly-Woods

We’ll be hibernating for the rest of Winter (maybe even some of Spring too) in this gorgeous “Cabin in the Holly-Woods” space. Part elegant hunting lodge, part wilderness chic, we designed this room for those who love rustic spaces with glamorous touches.

To start, we pulled together a base of hearty and comforting classic pieces, layered with delightful accents and luxurious statement pieces. Once the design was put together, we felt like our canvas – the room itself! – needed a little love. We decided some wall treatments were in order but, like many of you, we wanted to see the possibilities before committing. So, we came up with four options to choose from. We can’t decide, so pick your favorite!

choices

Blank Slate: For our original room we went with Benjamin Moore’s “Decorator’s White.” A slightly cooler shade, this choice creates a simple base for any interior and lets the furniture and materials speak for themselves.

Bold Color: Drama is the name of the game with this paint job. A bold and saturated green-blue hue, Benjamin Moore’s Salamander brings a breath of fresh-forest air inside our rustic glam space. We love how the gold accents and velvet sofa pop against this shade!

wood-panelingWood Paneling: This version of the space has been transformed by some peel-and-stick wood paneling from west elm. Available in four colors, we opted for the white-washed reclaimed wood for a fresh take on a “rustic cabin” staple.

wallpaperWhimsical Wallpaper: Piero Fornasetti’s Nuvolette wallpaper – “little clouds” in Italian – provides the stormy backdrop for the final version of our space. One of our favorite designers at Modsy, Fornasetti’s whimsical design transforms our glamorous cabin into a dreamy interior.

Stylist tip: We paired “Decorator’s White” with our Nuvolette wallpaper. The cooler white complements the wallpaper’s palette, where a warmer shade would feel oppositional.

If you like farmhouse chic, traditionally chic, or refined rustic spaces, you’ll be sure to love this collection! Not sure what your Modsy style is? Take our Style Quiz to find out.

Winter Whites Bedroom

winter_retreat

If “Sweater Weather” were a place it would be this Winter Whites bedroom. A retreat from these chilly January days, we’ve dreamed up the perfect bedroom to snuggle up and wait for winter’s end.

We crafted this bedroom for someone who loves rustic spaces, but craves a minimal vibe. We started with a palette of neutral tones, covering the full spectrum from white, to beige, to various shades of brown. When looking for pieces, we opted for organic materials to play up the rustic feeling. Textures galore, in this space natural woods, leather, clay, wool, and jute come together to create a harmonious yet visually dynamic space. Soft landscapes and whimsical insect studies were the final touch, artwork we selected to underscore the connection of the room to the natural world.

What brings the room to life is the play between textures. We chose to play with a collage of rough jute, caning, hammered metal, and patterned surfaces to create some visual intrigue within the minimal space. We especially love the bone inlay pattern on the Hessa dresser – an elegant and rustic touch to the space. As rustic as it is minimal, the natural palette, mix of traditional and contemporary furniture, and organic materials all create a warm and timeless “Winter White” space. The perfect cozy retreat, this collection is rooted in Winter even as it looks towards Spring.

Stylist tip: Double-dip with your furniture and use a desk as a nightstand. This is great for smaller spaces, and will help keep your room from feeling too “matchy-matchy.”
