My Modsy Story: How I Transformed My Home Office Into a Glam Sanctuary

When E moved into a new house they were determined to turn a drab room into an inspiring home office that reflected their personal creativity and bold style. Knowing they needed help, E. took the plunge and started their design process with Modsy.

Homeowner: E. (That’s right, —just E.)

Spaces: Office

My Style:  Glam Collector

The Backstory

“When my spouse and I moved from a one-bedroom apartment in LA to a three-bedroom home in Tucson, AZ, we finally each got the chance to truly have our own space. Aside from being excited by how much more space we had—anything is big after living in a 700 square foot apartment during a global pandemic—I was excited to have a dedicated home office space. I knew I wanted my office to have a warm and luxurious feel and blend old-school glam with some funky and eclectic choices. But the office had carpet we weren’t ready to rip up, and the walls were also this neutral yellow-beige—but it really just looked like the color of nicotine-stained walls from smokers.”

“I’m a writer, and I make my living telling stories on the page—and I needed help from someone who tells stories through decor.”

The Design Dilemma

“I know my strengths and interior design ain’t one of them! With this in mind, I knew right away I’d need a little expert help for creating the glam office I wanted. In particular, I needed a designer to show me what I could do with color throughout the room—everything from selecting a wall color that would work with the carpeting to finding decor that would really shine in the space. I’m a writer, and I make my living telling stories on the page—and I needed help from someone who tells stories through decor.”

The Modsy Moment

“I had no idea how the online interior design thing was going to work out. I wasn’t sure a 3D design could incorporate everything I wanted for my space, or if a stranger on the internet could find decor I loved that felt like ME. But I knew I couldn’t create what I wanted for the space alone, so I gave Modsy a try. I was blown away when I first saw my designs. When I showed them to my partner, he said, ‘Dang, that’s super fancy. It looks just like you.’ And then I proceeded to copy the sharable link from my Modsy project and send my office designs to my closest friends, who all squealed with delight.

“I just loved how my designer took my general ideas and put them to work in a design I love. She even mocked up designs using different wall colors so I could see how different options looked!  She was also able to help answer incremental questions along the way as I was debating different furniture options. I couldn’t have asked for more from the whole experience. And it’s super fun to know that everyone loves this desk I bought, too!”

The Real Results

“I walk into my office every day and spend anywhere from 8-9 hours there. I just love being in the space. I’m not rich, but my glam office makes me feel super posh and luxurious. I love what I do, but I bust my butt for a living. And my designer has made the space I bust my butt in a total delight.

“Modsy gets a bonus six out of five stars from me, especially since my glam office coordinates with the other two rooms we had designed! And our designer even incorporated my spouse’s and my widely divergent tastes to a tee. I feel like we have a real home now—not to mention some sweet rugs that really tie the room together!

My Modsy Story: Proof That Pet-friendly Designs Don’t Have to Sacrifice on Style

When Marsha and Dan became empty-nesters they decided it was finally time to finish designing their beach house. They soon discovered it was hard to find stylish, pet-friendly decor that went with their space.

Homeowner: Marsha, Dan, and dog Gunner

Space: Living Room

Our Style: Refined Rustic

The Backstory

Six years ago, my husband Dan and I purchased a beautiful house located in a tiny town on the Washington coast. It’s our dream home and we hope to move there permanently someday—but for now, it’s our second home where we spend most weekends and any time off we can get.

The Design Dilemma

Recently Dan and I became empty-nesters, so when the kids aren’t visiting it’s just us and our dog, Gunner. When the kids moved out we knew it was finally time to make our beach house the cozy home we wanted it to be.

“We were struggling to select furniture that was elevated enough to work for the architecture of our space, pet-friendly enough to handle our pooch, and affordable enough to buy on our budget.”

The space is very large and formal but we have a more casual style. We were struggling to select furniture that was elevated enough to work for the architecture of our space, pet-friendly enough to handle our pooch, and affordable enough to buy on our budget. I was also overwhelmed by the tall ceilings and finding decor that went with our color scheme.

The Modsy Moment

We had heard wonderful things about Modsy, and we loved seeing all the before and after pictures on the Modsy blog and Instagram—so you can imagine how pleased we were when we saw our initial designs. They completely exceeded our expectations. Our favorite part of the design process was seeing how our designer took our requests for durable furnishings and a casual beach look and seamlessly married them with the formal architecture.

“Our favorite part of the design process was seeing how our designer took our requests for durable furnishings and a casual beach look and seamlessly married them with the formal architecture.”

Another thing we really appreciated about Modsy was seeing our designs in the 360-view. This tool was so neat, adding an extra air of realism to our design experience and helping us see what our design could be in real life. It was so easy to swap furniture items from the 3D catalog too. It really helped us find the right pieces for us and the dog!

The Real Results

Before using Modsy, this room never felt complete and none of the pieces we had went with our house. Now we have a beautiful design that’s cozy but lives up to the grandeur of the room (and the baby grand piano that Dan inherited from his mom). Each piece was carefully chosen so it not only looks beautiful but can handle Gunner and his puppy pals when our kids bring their pets for a visit.

My Modsy Story: How my son and I designed a home together

Ready for a new phase of life, a father found an empty house where he and his son could start from scratch. The only problem was finding time to design the new space with his busy work schedule.

Actual Modsy Customer

The Backstory

“I wanted a fresh start for my 12-year-old son and myself, so I found a new house here in San Francisco. The house is over 200 years old, and before we moved in it was decorated with very traditional decor. My personal aesthetic is much more modern, so I knew we’d start over with a blank slate. But with every room completely empty, I needed to get the space decorated—and fast—so my son and I could feel comfortable here.”

“I wanted a fresh start for my 12-year-old son and myself, so I found a new house here in San Francisco.”

The Design Dilemma

“I know my personal style and I actually know quite a bit about design, as it factors heavily into my work. Having previously worked closely with traditional interior design services in both a personal and professional capacity, I knew plenty of people who could help me tackle my home design project. I could even have done a good job on my own, but I’m so busy that I wanted to outsource the work—and I knew I wanted it done faster than a traditional design service could offer. I’d heard about online interior design and decided I would give Modsy a try.”

Designer Insight:

“In our consult call, I could immediately tell that the client had style and vision but lacked the time he needed to bring his space together. I was determined to give him a well-thought-out design for each room within his tight timeframe.” –Janna, Modsy designer

Actual Modsy Customer

The Modsy Moment

“When I had my consult call with my Modsy designer, Janna, I told her I was very busy and I just wanted her to take my input I had for the space and to run with it. The results absolutely hit the bullseye!”

“What was even more impressive than how well Janna nailed my design aesthetic, was the way Modsy’s 3D designs really took my son and me along for the ride. My son was a really big part of the move, he helped me choose the house and even took part in the lease negotiations (he’s 12!), so it only made sense that he should have a say in the design process, too. He loved seeing his room go from an empty space to a 3D design to actually seeing the room come together IRL. Not only was the process fun for him but it also gave him a sense of autonomy and helped him grow a little.”

“My son loved seeing his room go from an empty space to a 3D design to actually seeing the room come together IRL.”

Designer Insight:

“As a Luxe designer at Modsy, one of the highlights of my job is revealing my clients’ designs during our Design Reveal video call. It was a special treat getting to present designs to this client; he was just so pleased to see how quickly his designs came together and was shocked by how little he had to do. And he was really excited for his son’s room, too, which was sweet!” –Janna, Modsy designer

Actual Modsy Customer

The Real Results

“Before using Modsy, the space was completely empty, without even a stitch of furniture. Now each room is fully furnished with beautiful furniture and paint selections that perfectly capture my design sensibilities. Janna selected colors and decor for every room that is appropriate for whatever I’m doing. Seriously, every space works for entertaining (when it’s safe to entertain again), relaxing, or even working from home on a busy day. Plus, my son really likes his bedroom design. His mind was blown and so was mine—but in the best possible way.”

Actual Modsy Customer

Designer Insight:

“For this project, I knew it was key to imbue each room with a bit of fun, along with items that felt personal. In the son’s room, I added a large brass t-rex sculpture which was in line with Modsy customer’s cool sensibility, but it felt like something a kid would get a kick out of, too.” –Janna, Modsy designer

“I was careful to think about the functionality and livability of the space. I imagined the client and his son hanging out together or with friends, and I also imagined that he might want to work in any space in the house and not just his office. Because of this, I chose colors and decor that were bold enough to go with Modsy customer’s style but versatile enough to fit many different occasions and scenarios.” –Janna, Modsy designer

My Modsy Story: Creating a Place of Peace in a Season of Grief

After her mother’s death, Sandra wanted to redecorate her childhood home as a way to process her grief. Her Modsy designer helped transform her home, preparing her for the next phase of life.

Homeowner: Sandra

Spaces: Living Room, Family Room, Office, and Bedroom

Her Style: Mod Enthusiast

The Backstory

When her mother passed away, Sandra was overcome with a tremendous sense of loss. She found herself alone in the home they had shared for many years and was reminded of her mother everywhere she looked. She knew that making space her own with new designs would help her with the grieving process—but she had no idea how to get started.

“I wasn’t sure what my design style was, and I had given my brother most of the furniture. I was completely stressed and overwhelmed!”

The Design Dilemma

Since she had given away most of her mother’s furniture, the home was a blank slate. But thinking through how to fill and design the main rooms proved quite difficult.

“I have limited decorating experience and honestly didn’t know how to decorate a house. I was frustrated and overwhelmed and I couldn’t decide how to furnish the rooms on my own.”

“I was frustrated and overwhelmed and I couldn’t decide how to furnish the rooms on my own.”

Designer Insights:

“Sandra is slowly redecorating her childhood home and wanted to make this space truly her own. My goal was to provide her with personalized designs for her space that she could bring to life over time, as her budget allowed” –Ciara R., Sandra’s Modsy Designer

The Modsy Moment

Unsure of how to begin, Sandra was relieved to hand over the reins to her Modsy designer, Ciara. In the end, she was thrilled with how Ciara virtually transformed her space.

“I was in absolute awe when I saw my Modsy designs. It was so fun to see the actual rooms in my home, designed virtually with new furniture. I loved the results!”

Designer Insights:

“Sandra liked the idea of using a lot of whites in her design—but she wanted to make sure her space didn’t feel too cold. I added pops of colors through the rugs, pillows, and some golden decor accents. Incorporating some small wood elements also helped add some warmth to her space.” – Ciara R., Sandra’s Modsy Designer

The Real Results

Sandra’s designer kept her mother’s memory alive by working with the architecture of her home—but it got a stylish upgrade that reflected Sandra’s style and needs for the space.

“Modsy changed my life. My mother was my best friend. After she died, I was not only heartbroken and grieving, but I was overwhelmed with making my childhood home my own. Every room reminded me of my mother’s presence. My Modsy designer assisted me in transforming every room, giving me a home that feels personalized and special. It’s now a place of peace. I’m grateful for the inspirational design changes that have taken place and will continue to consult with my Modsy designer to enhance the environmental peace in my home.”

“My Modsy designer assisted me in transforming every room, giving me a home that feels personalized and special. It’s now a place of peace.”

Designer Insights:

“Using a white color palette in every room helped create a sense of cohesion throughout Sandra’s home—and definitely showed off her personality.

“In her home office, I added a fur rug to the reading nook to help separate this space from the rest of the office and make it its own cozy section. Since this workspace is in the basement and gets limited natural light, I also added some plants, which bring some life into the space.” –Ciara R., Sandra’s Modsy Designer

Our Modsy Story: How We Created a Perfectly Cohesive and Cozy Mountain Getaway

Yates & Liz wanted to carve out a little slice of heaven for people to get away during hectic times. For them, that meant finding a design service that could turn a dated farmhouse into a cozy retreat.

Homeowners: Yates & Liz

Space: Multi-Room Vacation House

Our Style: Modern Rustic

Read on to learn how Modsy designer Becky S. helped the couple find the look for their mountain getaway.

The Backstory

When Yates & Liz bought a private farmhouse atop Old Forge Mountain in the Blue Ridge Mountains, they did so with the vision of creating a beautiful vacation rental retreat where guests could hunker down and relax. The house was entirely empty and they needed help coming up with a design that would ensure the interior of the house was as beautiful as its scenic surroundings.

Views of the farmhouse rental before Modsy

“It was important to us that the entire house be designed all at once because we wanted a cohesive look for the entire space instead of piecemeal looks for the individual spaces that wouldn’t flow together.”

The Design Dilemma

Yates & Liz knew from the beginning that they needed an expert eye to help them achieve the look and feel they wanted for thier farmhouse.

“The space was super large and dated. It easily could have become a hodgepodge mess even with lots of love and great intentions. Getting help from a professional designer was so important.”

Designer insight:

“From the beginning, I knew Yates & Liz wanted the space to function as a vacation rental, so the goal was to make every room cohesive but still fun and inviting. The biggest challenge (though, a really fun one!) was making sure each room had a unique look and feel but that they all still visually worked together as a cohesive whole.” –Becky

The Modsy Moment

When the couple discovered Modsy, they knew they’d found the answer to their design conundrum. Bundling each room into the same project and collaborating with the same designer was exactly what he needed to achieve a cohesive look for his entire farmhouse.

“Having the ability to see designs for each room before making purchases was key. This helped us feel confident that, as we purchased pieces, they would fit a cohesive vision for the whole house.”

How Modsy Helped Yates & Liz

Yates & Liz loved that their designer, Becky, was not only able to make each room in the house work together but also that she took their ideas in new directions that they wouldn’t have thought of alone.

“Once we saw my designer’s plan, we started getting really excited about bringing it to life. We loved that we were able to contribute ideas—like using a green sofa in the main living space—and our designer was able to incorporate them and take the idea to the next level.”

Designer Insights:

“Layering colors and textures is key when you want a cozy, lived in, yet very unique and interesting space. For Yates & Liz’s house, I focused on artfully mixing colors, textures, and materials in a way that made the spaces feel intentional. And speaking of color—the green sofa is one of my favorite parts of the whole design. That, paired with a lot of natural textures in accent chairs and fun pops of colors in rugs is what stole the show!” –Becky

The house’s relaxed and fun atmosphere makes it easy for guests to soak in the bucolic Blue Ridge Mountains scenery. My Modsy Story: How Modsy Transformed My Entryway Into an At-Home Coffee Shop

Nicole knew she wanted to do something special with her entryway foyer—but she wasn’t sure how to bring her ideas to life in a way that had a cohesive look and feel.

Homeowner: Nicole C. Non-profit Director + food blogger

Location: St. Charles, MO

Room: Entryway

Her Style: Reclaimed Visionary

The Backstory

When we moved into our new house, we had almost no furniture. Our space was kind of sad and empty—but we knew it had great potential! We just weren’t sure what to do with it. We were especially struggling with the entryway area right off the front door. We didn’t want it to be just a large entryway foyer, but we also didn’t want it to be a sitting room. But other than those two options, we didn’t know what else to do with the space!

The Design Dilemma

My husband and I have both been WFH since COVID started and we wanted to make our entryway into a space we both loved since we’re there all the time now. I started digging around Pinterest and came across some great ideas for at-home coffee bars. I’m a food blogger, so I liked the idea of having my passion for good food and drinks inspire this space. The only problem was I couldn’t visualize how the space could come together and I felt overwhelmed by the thought of sourcing all the products and creating a cohesive look and feel on my own. So, I turned to Google, and that’s when I found Modsy!

“I’m a food blogger, so I liked the idea of having my passion for good food and drinks inspire this space. but I was having a hard time visualizing how it could come together and felt overwhelmed with sourcing all the products and creating a cohesive look and feel.”

The Modsy Moment

I was completely blown away when I got my first designs. I was so excited that I immediately texted them to a few friends! I loved how our designer sent us some layouts to consider for our “coffee shop” before picking out all the pieces that would go in the space. That extra step gave us clarity on what we wanted and needed for the room.

“I was completely blown away when I got my first designs. I was so excited that I immediately texted them to a few friends!”

The Real Results

I’m so happy with our new space. Our designer did an awesome job! I never would have been able to make our little coffee shop on my own—at least not without some major headaches! And Modsy lets you easily buy everything at once, which saved me so much time and energy.

“I’m so happy with our new space . . . I never would have been able to make our little coffee shop on my own—at least not without some major headaches!”

I can’t tell you what it means to have a space that feels like a daily getaway just a few feet away from my bedroom door. Having an at-home coffee shop/office is really helpful especially during COVID when daily rituals have become so important to creating a sense of security. We feel so blessed to be in this home and are so happy we used Modsy, which we also used to help with our living room and dining room designs because we enjoyed the experience so much—we basically never want to leave any of these spaces!

We were moving into our first home, with our newborn and first puppy (!) so it was really important to have an elegant design that worked for the entire family. My Modsy Story: How I Transformed My Living Room into the Perfect Coastal Retreat

Nicole and her husband are busy, so they wanted their home to feel like the perfect coastal retreat—but they needed some help getting there.

Homeowner: Nicole G. Marketing Rep.

Location: San Francisco, CA.

Rooms: Open Living Room

Their Style: Contemporary Connoisseur

The Backstory

When getting ready to move into our new home, my husband and I knew we needed some help with the design. I enjoy home design and wanted to be hands-on with the process—but since I work full-time I knew I couldn’t do it myself. And I just didn’t have the time for a traditional design service.

Plus, I’m pretty picky with interior design. I know what I do and don’t like, but I don’t always know how to bring that vision to life. My husband and I both work a lot, so we wanted our home to have a vacation vibe—a place that felt comfortable and pulled together, where we could really relax at the end of the day.

My husband and I both work a lot, so we wanted our home to have a vacation vibe—a place that felt comfortable and pulled together, where we could really relax at the end of the day.

The Design Dilemma

The space was completely empty when we started thinking about the design. The blank slate made it full of possibility—but also made it really overwhelming to think about how it could all come together into a finished space! Plus, I was just too busy to tackle the design on my own.

I had tried Havenly, a different online interior design service, before and I wasn’t thrilled with the results. I felt limited and uninspired by their flat, 2D style boards and felt like they didn’t really capture my vision. If I was going to invest in another online design service, I knew I wanted one where I had more options and could be more hands-on. I didn’t want to put money into it if I wasn’t going to end up with a design I really loved.

The Modsy Moment

I heard about Modsy through social media and was impressed by their 3D designs and the fact that my designer would continue to work with me until I was 100% happy with my design. So, I decided to give it a shot.

I liked my first two designs but knew they weren’t exactly what I needed for the space, so I started experimenting with my designs using the 3D style editor, which let me swap out items in my design and try out other ideas. I loved having the ability to try out different design ideas with the 3D style editor. Some of them worked and some of them were a total bust! But, it kept me from getting stuck on an idea that would never work for my space. And my designer took my ideas to the next level, in a way I never could have done on my own!

With Modsy’s life-like 3D designs, I was able to feel confident in what my space would really look like in real life—something that was missing with my experience with Havenly. She was so receptive to my ideas and suggestions, and she built on them to make them better. I loved the additional perspective from my designer, and she had some design ideas that I never would have thought of on my own. I was so relieved that we were able to land on a design that worked for our space and that my husband and I really love!

The Real Results

It’s cozy and relaxed—a perfect getaway from my busy life, complete with a beachy vibe. I love how my living room turned out—and it feels so good knowing I explored all the options for my space before landing on the final design. That gives me so much confidence that this is the right layout and design for my space. It’s exactly what I want! Every time I walk into the room, I feel transported, like it’s my own private oasis.

My Modsy Story: How I Found a Design Worthy of My Remodeled Home

After working hard to complete a big remodel, Jennifer wanted a design that matched her beautiful space. But she struggled to find an interior design that lived up to her expectations.

Customer StoryThe Backstory

My husband and I were going through a lot of firsts when we decided it was time to redecorate our home. Not only had we recently bought our house, but we also completely remodeled the first floor, and we had a baby, all in a year! Once the dust had settled and our whirlwind year was complete, I wanted to decorate the dining room space that I’d worked so hard to remodel.

Customer StoryThe Design Dilemma

After the remodel was complete, I found myself at a loss—I just didn’t know how to find items that lived up to my expectations of what the dining room should be. I was so invested in my home that I’d lost the ability to successfully decorate it on my own. I wanted an expert eye to look at my space and give me ideas on what would work for my space. I knew I’d never settle on a cohesive look alone, and I was so busy with the new baby I just didn’t have time to figure out what I needed.

Lemon Stripes X Modsy: Julia’s New Home Office Reveal

When Lemon Stirpes blogger Julia moved into her new home she knew exactly where her office would go. She just needed a little help putting it together.

Lemon Stripes

Homeowner: Julia of Lemon Stripes

Location: Stamford, CT

Room: Home Office

Her Style: Chic Collector

The Backstory

When Julia, of Lemon Stripes, and her husband were looking for a new home, she says that she immediately fell in love with the sun-drenched room off the front entrance of the house that is now their home. She knew that if they ended up with that house, that that little room, separated by French doors, would be her office. “It was a perfect size—and the light! Oh the light,” she says.

The Design Dilemma

Well, they did get that house, and Julia started out strong with decorating her home office. She found a few key pieces she wanted to include, as well as a few pieces she already had but didn’t know what to do from there.

“The room is long and very thin, so laying it out felt like a major challenge and I didn’t know how to fit my large filing cabinet into it.”

“I picked out this pretty blue rug and show-stopping coral grasscloth wallpaper pretty quickly, but then I felt totally stuck,” Julia says. “The room is long and very thin, so laying it out felt like a major challenge and I didn’t know how to fit my large filing cabinet into it.”

The Modsy Moment

Julia and her husband had worked with Modsy before, on their family room design a few months prior. So, when she told us about her layout dilemma, we were happy to help again! She sent us photos of the space, along with her design preferences.

“My designer came back with different layout options and two totally different designs using the furniture that I already had. Ultimately, I chose the layout with my desk in the middle because this position makes me feel like such a boss!” Julia says.

The Real Results: Tour Julia’s Office

Ready to see how Julia’s home office turned out? Keep reading!

As she said above, one of the designs we gave her included “floating” her desk in the middle of the space. Pulling it away from the walls, especially in such a long and narrow space, felt like the right move—and gave her those boss-lady vibes.

“I love that they added bookshelves so I can display photos and some of the pieces I inherited from my grandmother in the room that I spend most of my day in,”

We wanted to keep her necessary paperwork within reach, so we tucked her file credenza behind the desk—which also created a perfect surface for propping her inspiration board and a plant! We also added shelving in her office, where she could display some of her favorite objects and store some additional organizational boxes.

“I love that they added bookshelves so I can display photos and some of the pieces I inherited from my grandmother in the room that I spend most of my day in,” says Julia.

And, since Julia had already picked out a stunning, textural wallpaper, we wanted to make sure that nothing took away from that. We also used that wallpaper as the foundation of the color palette and kept everything else more neutral and bright.

“I decided not to hang a lot of artwork in here. Instead, I’m treating the wallpaper like art and keep it really simple,” says Julia. “I tend to go overboard on wall art and then regret it so, for now, it’s staying this way and it feels very calm and serene without too much going on.”

“This is the most ‘me’ room of all time. It is bright and cheerful and truly makes me motivated to work hard every day!”

And, of course, you can’t forget the large mirror! It’s not only perfect for selfies that show off Julia’s stunning outfits, but it helps reflect light and make the small space feel larger.

“This is the most ‘me’ room of all time. It is bright and cheerful and truly makes me motivated to work hard every day,” says Julia. “Before the space was done, I would find myself working from the kitchen counter or the living room couch quite often, but now I get excited to ‘go to work’ with my mug of tea and spend all day in this beautiful office. The finishing touches pulled it together and made it mine.”

How Modsy Partnered With the St. Jude Dream Home® Giveaway To Raise $477,600 in Billings, Montana

Each year, the St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway is conducted in over 40 markets across the country, raising over $40M annually for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. A standard of the campaign is to host open house weekends for the public to tour the home; however, out of an abundance of caution due to COVID-19, all open houses were transformed to virtual events. Without the ability to stage and physically show the homes, the team got creative…and that’s where Modsy came in!

The Backstory

The St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway is one of the largest fundraising programs for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. This nationwide program is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year and has cumulatively raised over $500M for St. Jude. The St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway involves selling a limited number of $100 tickets to win a newly constructed, or newly renovated, home with an estimated value typically ranging from $300,000 to $600,000. This is the 4th house that has been given away in Billings, MT, which has cumulatively raised $2.3M from the generous support of ticket buyers.

The Design Dilemma

St. Jude was going to physically stage and host open houses for the Billings St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway this spring. But then COVID-19 hit and plans had to change. They didn’t want to postpone the St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway, but they were also faced with the conundrum of showcasing the beauty and craftsmanship of the newly renovated home’s design without people visiting the house in-person.

The Modsy Moment

After learning about our design services, St. Jude asked Modsy to partner with them on the Billings St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway to virtually design and furnish the interior of the home.

“One of our staff members was a St. Jude patient growing up,” says Alessandra Wood, Modsy’s VP of Style, which made this a very special project for our team. “We are always looking for opportunities like this, where we can leverage our expertise and what we do best to help people or places in need.”

Our design for the master bedroom

Our design for the family room

Our design for the guest room

Utilizing our 3D design technology, we created custom, to-scale 360-degree designs for each room to help bring this home to life. This allowed interested potential ticket buyers to experience a realistic, 3D look at the entire St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway house before reserving tickets.

The Real Results

With the virtual design images included on the St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway website, dreamhome.org, anyone could tour the Billings St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway house. It made for a safe and seamless way to continue to support St. Jude during the coronavirus pandemic. And people loved the design—as evidenced by the 4,776 raffle tickets sold, and the $477,600 raised. This is so impactful, as all proceeds will help ensure that families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food – because all a family should worry about is helping their child live.

We were so excited to have the opportunity to help give back to families in need. Our goal at Modsy is to help bring more happiness into the home and we hope that we accomplished that through making this house feel like the ultimate dream home.

On June 25, the raffle winner was selected, and Janet Sanchez of Billings, MT became the lucky new owner of this newly renovated house. And guess what? This is actually Janet’s childhood home, where she spent the first five years of her life. She was randomly selected as the winner, out of the thousands of entrants.

“I can’t wait to bring my siblings here and have them share stories with me,” she says. “Yeah, it’s a dream. It’s a dream home.”

In love with this dream home? You can shop these designs, too! Check out the great room, master bedroom, basement family room, and guest room designs.

Our Modsy Story: Designing Jackie and Mike a Living-Dining Room They Both Love

Jackie and Mike wanted the perfect living-dining space for their new home but were struggling to make their dream come to life. See what happened when they decided to try Modsy.

Homeowners: Jackie and Mike, insurance underwriter + travel blogger and a medical sales representative

Location: Atlanta, GA

Room: Living-Dining Room

Their Style: Classic Collector + Rustic Traveler

The Backstory

We got married two and a half years ago and moved straight into a one-bedroom apartment in the city. We knew this was just a temporary space, so we never put too much thought or effort into making it feel like “home.”

When we moved into our new house, things changed—we were so excited about having a place we could call our own and wanted to get everything just right. We wanted our home to be a welcoming space with a cozy style that we’d enjoy for many, many years to come.

The Design Dilemma

Like many couples, we have similar yet different styles, Mike likes more classic traditional pieces and I enjoy the more bohemian style, on top of that, neither of us is a design “guru” by any means so it was challenging finding the right mix. We’d spent a fair amount of time on Pinterest and had ideas that we loved, but we struggled to put our different visions into action.

“We’d spent a fair amount of time on Pinterest and had ideas that we loved, but we struggled to put our different visions into action.”

Our living-dining area was a particular challenge for us—we were starting from scratch and it was overwhelming trying to figure out how to begin, where to shop, and how to stick to our budget. It was even harder to find items that fit both of our style needs and felt as cozy as we wanted.

The Modsy Moment

We first heard about Modsy from the blog In Honor Of Design—we loved the guest room that she designed with Modsy so much! We also loved the idea of using a professional design service that could help us create our dream living-dining space virtually. It seemed like the best way to get our new home in order!

How Modsy Helped Jackie and Mike

We were SO excited to see the first round of Modsy designs, and they fully lived up to our expectations. It was cool seeing our exact room designed online in 3D for the first time. Modsy brought our different design dreams together into one cohesive reality! Plus, all the furniture they picked was beautiful and we both loved the selection!

“We were SO excited to see the first round of Modsy designs, and they fully lived up to our expectations.”

It’s so wonderful that Modsy lets you order from a bunch of different brands. Which helped us find all the right pieces, even a pet-friendly rug for our dog, Hooper! We loved that they took care of things like price matching and shipping coordination. The discount codes were also great for large orders (we saved tons). We’ve purchased quite a few items from our Modsy designs. It’s been a blast putting our room together and seeing it come to life!

The Real Results

We wanted a casual, relaxed vibe that still felt traditional and that is what Modsy gave us! We love how our living-dining room provides both an inviting eating area and a cozy gathering space. It’s warm, welcoming, and comfortable. It’s truly a joy being in our home and living in the designs that Modsy helped create. Plus, It’s perfect for our daily streaming of Good Morning America while making breakfast. We love it and hope to do a few additional rooms in the future!

“It has been so comforting having our living-dining room designed during this unprecedented time.”

It has been so comforting having our living-dining room designed during this unprecedented time. Although it is hard not to go stir-crazy after 14+ days of social distancing, being able to spend time in our newly furnished home brings comfort and peace to both of us. We’re grateful for this laidback and welcoming space to call home in what is otherwise an uncertain and discomforting time in our world.

My Modsy Story: How Working Mom Andrea Brought Her Family’s Dream Living Room to Life

Working mom Andrea wanted to make her new living room a welcoming space but she struggled to find the right furniture (and the time). Read on to learn how Modsy helped her create the cozy living room she and her family wanted.

Homeowner: Andrea W. Account Manager for a tech company

Location: Seattle, WA

Room: Living Room

Her Style: Rustic Warmth

The Backstory

Three years ago my family and I moved into a new house. The large living room had no furniture and the pieces I bought just didn’t work. We never used the living room, because I couldn’t figure out how to make it cozy.

But, it wasn’t until I visited a neighbor’s house that I realized how much I needed a space that my family and I could truly enjoy. She had a beautiful living room with the same floor plan as me but her space felt more finished and inviting. Meanwhile, my living room still felt bleak and lacked the warmth and design it needed to feel like home. I knew deep down I needed a change.

“It wasn’t until I visited a neighbors house that I realized how much I needed a space that my family and I could truly enjoy.”

The Design Dilemma

Even though I knew I needed to change my living room to a space my family would enjoy, I couldn’t find the time. My husband and I both work full-time and have 3 young kids. Between, traveling for work, kiddo activities, and finding time for friends and family… The task of pulling together a room just seemed too daunting.

On top of all that, our living room has two wide entrances and is connected to my kids’ playroom, which made it extra difficult to design. To me, these seemed like two completely different spaces and I didn’t know how to lay-out my furniture to make them work. Honestly, I didn’t even know what size furniture to use or what style would look best. I wasn’t sure about colors or patterns either… All that is to say pulling a new room together seemed like too big of a task for me to tackle without any help.

“Between, work, kiddo activities, and finding time for friends and family… The task of pulling together a room just seemed too daunting. “

The Modsy Moment

Around that time I remember seeing ads for Modsy on Facebook. At first, I was totally skeptical of the service. I thought “It’s a Facebook ad—can you trust it?” It was the customer stories, like this one, that sealed the deal and I decided to give the process a try.

How Modsy Helped Andrea

My designer was so responsive to my requests along the way—each design she put together got me closer to what I wanted. Plus her design knowledge totally put my mind at ease so I didn’t feel stressed about the design process.

The ability to see the different design options helped me understand what I really liked for my space. I had NO idea that I would end up loving the mid-century modern look the best—MIND BLOWN! It only took a few revisions before I was 100% happy with my look.

Modsy Customer StoryThe Real Results

Modsy totally changed my perceptions about using an online service. Their great design work sold me in no time. Plus their order concierge service made sure I got the best deals on my furniture.  It’s hard to believe it only took a small investment to save a lot of money. With the savings I made purchasing through Modsy I feel like the service paid for itself.

Now, not only do I LOVE my new living room, every single person that sees it loves it too! It pulls people together. It’s so cozy and comfortable we enjoy it daily!

In the wake of everything that is happening with COVID-19 I keep thinking about our Modsy design. I couldn’t be more grateful for this cozy living room while we take shelter in place. It brings me comfort and joy to have a dedicated space I can use with my family on a daily basis. It’s almost like we created extra square footage in the house! Remember if your space isn’t functional, you won’t use it and right now we need to use every single square foot we can while we’re home daily!

My Modsy Story: When Designing My Room Took Four Years Too Long

We’ve all been in Christine’s shoes—she’d been thinking about redoing her living room for ages but never did. Here’s how we gave her the confidence to finally do it.

Homeowner: Christine S, software engineer and mom extraordinaire

Location: Omaha, NE

Room: Awkwardly Shaped Living Room

Her Style: Mod Enthusiast

The Backstory

Hitting that “now or never” point with decorating

After four years of living with an awkward living room layout, I decided enough was enough! I had plenty of inspiration (four years’ worth, in fact) but knew I was going to need some help turning that inspiration into reality.

What was important for me in my home was for the living room to feel less awkward but be a good durable space where my family could spend a lot of time. Also, it’s an area that’s highly visible when guests come over, so I wanted it to look nice and needed space to hide a ton of toys. I wasn’t asking for too much!

The Design Dilemma

Finding ways to open up (and brighten up) the room

The biggest challenge for me was dealing with the awkward room layout. My house was built in the ’80s with this built-in cabinet on one side of the fireplace and a window on the other side.  No matter where I placed my sofa, chairs, and T.V., the room just did not flow.

Additionally, the space can feel very dark because of two very large, mature maple trees in the backyard that block the natural sunlight. I knew lightening the room up would do it wonders, but I wanted some professional help to show me the best solution.

The Modsy Moment

When all the inspiring ideas and images still didn’t solve her dilemma

Previously, I’d designed another room in my house with help from the retailer Ethan Allen. This time though, I didn’t want to feel obligated to purchase their furniture, so I began exploring other resources.

This began my extensive internet search for ideas for how to change up my living room, specifically how to help with room design and furniture placement. I came across Modsy, and then went searching for reviews of the service. I liked the pictures I saw of the room renderings, and it seemed like exactly the help I needed so I went ahead and tried it out.

It was very easy to understand how to use Modsy, and I couldn’t wait to get home and take my room pictures after I had signed up. I wouldn’t say I was skeptical, but I did wonder if I could make the end result look as good as the rendering.

How Modsy’s Renderings Helped Christine:

Finishing a problem room once and for all (and staying under budget)

When I got my first two renderings back, my first thought was ‘I couldn’t believe I waited four years to do this!’ Modsy’s ideas totally opened up some new possibilities for the room, like midcentury style furniture and different color palettes. I made some tweaks and swapped a few pieces of furniture for my third rendering, but didn’t take size quite into account—the armchairs I selected looked somewhat ridiculous. For my fourth rendering, my Modsy style advisor was able to add a sofa and chairs I was eyeing into my first Modsy design. I loved this layout, and decided to use this rendering as the model for my living room. Finally!

I would’ve never thought of moving the furniture in the way that Modsy had suggested. It really took into account the pre-existing conditions of my space that I couldn’t change, such as the huge fireplace, the built-in cabinet, and the awkward little window.

This layout was essentially what influenced all my furniture choices, and I ended up buying some of the exact items shown in the rendering. But, most importantly, I kept the furniture dimensions and styles that Modsy had suggested in mind when making my purchases. Dimensions have such a huge impact on your room, and it can be so hard to visualize how a certain size sofa will work in your space. Getting to see the furniture in the room before committing to it made all the difference—that was what Modsy really helped me with the most.

I ended up with a combination of furniture and pieces from Nebraska Furniture Mart, West Elm, Wayfair and Target; I installed new carpeting (long past due) and then bought a new sofa, two armchairs, end tables, a T.V. stand, and other odds and ends. I also painted the room and the built-in cabinets (suggestions from my Modsy Style Advisor).

The room is finished now and I pretty much changed everything. I was able to do all of this for under the budget I gave Modsy at beginning of the project—I said $7,500, and it all came in right around $5,300 (not including the carpeting, but that was right at $1,000)!
