My Modsy Story: How Modsy’s VP of Style Designed a Small Nursery With Major Style

When Modsy’s VP of Style, Alessandra Wood, found out she was pregnant, she was thrilled—both by her growing family and her chance to design a nursery with historical style.

Real Home Nursery Design

The Backstory

My husband and I purchased our home 2 years ago. It was our first home together, and we knew it was the place where we’d start our family. We loved that there was this tiny room off the main bedroom that we hoped one day could be our nursery.

Like many women, I experienced challenges getting pregnant, so the room began to take on a sense of heaviness. The space was supposed to be our nursery, but it was still just a dressing room.

Before I got pregnant we used the space as a dressing room, which was nice, especially after years of living in a tiny, 495 square foot apartment in San Francisco. But, like many women, I experienced challenges getting pregnant, so the room began to take on a sense of heaviness. The space was supposed to be our nursery, but it was still just a dressing room. Fortunately, after a lot of meditation, a little luck, and a good dose of science, I finally found out I was pregnant in March of 2020!

The Design Dilemma

Once I knew I was having a baby, I quickly began the process of transforming this space into a nursery. The biggest challenges were the size of the space and, after years of waiting for this moment, the pressure I put on myself to make it perfect.

Once I knew I was having a baby, I quickly began the process of transforming this space into a nursery. The biggest challenges were the size of the space and, after years of waiting for this moment, the pressure I put on myself to make it perfect.

Not only do I teach design history, but I’ve worked in tech and

San Francisco interior design at  Modsy for over 5 years. I knew using Modsy’s life-like 3D designs would help me find the right layout and furniture for my nursery and alleviate the pressure I was putting on myself.

Real Home Nursery DesignMy vision was to create a space rooted in classic design with a few modern pieces sprinkled in for a collected vibe. I also wanted to buy furniture that would last for years so my baby could grow-up with beautifully crafted pieces that had ties to the past while being part of her future. But I struggled to decide what pieces I really needed in the room—did I want a regular size crib or a mini crib to save space? Did I need a changing table? What about a glider? I clearly didn’t have room to squeeze in both.

I also had a few unique pieces in mind that I wanted to see designed into the space to make sure I loved how it looked. The first was an antique-inspired brass crib. I knew it would fit perfectly in the space based on measurements, but I wasn’t sure if it would look too big or bulky. The second was a gorgeous William Morris wallpaper called Pimpernel. As anyone who’s listened to my podcast, The Render, knows, I’m a huge fan of Victorian-era design, and Morris is one of my all-time favorite designers.

One of my favorite details is the nursery’s pièce de résistance—a Picasso print of two doves that my mom, Ermelinda gave me.

Lastly, one of my favorite details is the nursery’s pièce de résistance—a Picasso print of two doves that my mom, Ermelinda gave me. Doves symbolize peace, love, and fidelity, so including this gift from her in the space really brought home the importance of surrounding the baby with art and storytelling.

Real Home Nursery Design

The Modsy Moment

As both a design expert and someone who’s used the tech, I can tell you that seeing your space in 3D with all the design elements in place is really empowering and was really reassuring for me with this important project.

Seeing the Modsy 3D designs made everything feel so much more real as we waited for the furniture (and baby) to arrive.

The best part was the 3D designs made it easy for me to share my vision with my husband, so we were both invested and happy with space. Plus, his parents wanted to gift us a crib, and being able to show them the antique-inspired brass one we wanted via the 3D design was a great way to share our vision and excitement.

Seeing the Modsy 3D designs made everything feel so much more real as we waited for the furniture (and baby) to arrive.

The Real Results

Now that the designs are complete everything in the space feels specifically chosen for our baby. I wanted her to be surrounded by good design and imagery that would shape her childhood memories as well as pieces that could be in her room and our home for decades to come. Using Modsy, I was able to fully ensure that my design vision was realized and I couldn’t be happier with the results.

My Modsy Story: Rediscovering My Old Self With a New Design

When her two eldest children left the nest Lisa decided she wanted a fresh design for her space with ties to her past. Using Modsy she was able to bring the old and new together.

Customer home makeover

Homeowner: Lisa H.

Spaces: Living Room and Office

Her Style: Mod Collector

Customer home makeoverThe Backstory

Lisa and her husband were living with the furniture they bought when they moved into their house 18 years ago. After raising three kids in that home, their furniture was a bit worn, to say the least. When two of her kids moved out of the house this past year, Lisa decided it was time to freshen up the living room and turn one of the kid’s bedrooms into her office.

“When we first moved into our house, we had two little kids and just wanted something sturdy—the furniture was just about function. By the time they moved out, I was sick of our space, and I actually started looking at new houses online. But then I was like—I don’t need to move, I just need to re-decorate!”

“By the time the kids moved, I was sick of our space, and I actually started looking at new houses online. But then I was like—I don’t need to move, I just need to re-decorate!”

The Design Dilemma

Knowing she wanted a fresh, more grown-up space for her husband and herself, Lisa was ready for a brand new style. But, she didn’t know what that style should be or how to source new furniture that would fit with the pieces she wanted to keep.

Customer home makeover

“I had no idea what my style was. This space had been about our kids—but with two of them grown and one teenager, we decided it was time to make our space feel more adult. I knew I’d be spending money on furniture, and I wanted to foolproof that investment to make sure I was buying the right items. I just wanted extra guidance for the process. Since I wasn’t sure how to pull it off on my own, I decided to try Modsy.”

Customer home makeover

The Modsy Moment

Using Modsy, Lisa worked one-on-one with a designer who helped her find furniture that fit perfectly with the items she wanted to keep in her home—like a Korean cabinet and some artwork from her grandmother. Lisa’s Modsy designer managed to create a new design that felt both fresh and personal.

Customer home makeover

“When I opened up my designs, I was stunned. They were nothing near what I expected, but totally perfect. My designer did a great job of seamlessly integrating my belongings into the design. She took my valued items, all cherished but stylistically disparate, and merged them together in a way that looked cohesive with the new furniture.”

Customer home makeover

“My designer even incorporated my love of travel photography into the designs and selected artwork that reflected that interest.”

“My designer even incorporated my love of travel photography into the designs and selected artwork that reflected that interest. The art she chose actually inspired me to go back into my own travel photography archives and find meaningful photos to hang in my office space. The whole Modsy experience helped me tap into my own creativity and bring more of my own vision and personality into my living room and office design. I literally bought everything I needed for the space in a single day! “

The Real Results

Before using Modsy, Lisa never spent much time in the living room and never had a dedicated space to call her own. Now that the living room is redesigned, Lisa finds herself relaxing in it constantly. As for the office, she couldn’t be happier to have a space that reflects her style and interests.

“Both of these spaces are everything I hoped for and more. The living room is so nice now. I love how we got our grown-up space that ties together the old and the new in a meaningful and pleasing way. And I absolutely love my office. It’s the first time I’ve had my very own space in this house. Before, I was taking Zoom calls from the bar counter in the dining room. Now, I have a dedicated workspace that’s also home to my personal interests. It’s so much MY space. My sewing machine, knitting projects, books, and travel photos all have a home in this room. After so many years of our home being geared toward our kids, who I adore, it feels special to have a space that’s all my own.”

The Backstory

When her mother passed away, Sandra was overcome with a tremendous sense of loss. She found herself alone in the home they had shared for many years and was reminded of her mother everywhere she looked. She knew that making space her own with new designs would help her with the grieving process—but she had no idea how to get started.

“I wasn’t sure what my design style was, and I had given my brother most of the furniture. I was completely stressed and overwhelmed!”

empty split level home

The Design Dilemma

Since she had given away most of her mother’s furniture, the home was a blank slate. But thinking through how to fill and design the main rooms proved quite difficult.

“I have limited decorating experience and honestly didn’t know how to decorate a house. I was frustrated and overwhelmed and I couldn’t decide how to furnish the rooms on my own.”

Designer Insights:

“Sandra is slowly redecorating her childhood home and wanted to make this space truly her own. My goal was to provide her with personalized designs for her space that she could bring to life over time, as her budget allowed” –Ciara R., Sandra’s Modsy Designer

The Modsy Moment

Unsure of how to begin, Sandra was relieved to hand over the reins to her Modsy designer, Ciara. In the end, she was thrilled with how Ciara virtually transformed her space.

“I was in absolute awe when I saw my Modsy designs. It was so fun to see the actual rooms in my home, designed virtually with new furniture. I loved the results!”

Designer Insights:

“Sandra liked the idea of using a lot of whites in her design—but she wanted to make sure her space didn’t feel too cold. I added pops of colors through the rugs, pillows, and some golden decor accents. Incorporating some small wood elements also helped add some warmth to her space.” – Ciara R., Sandra’s Modsy Designer

The Real Results

Sandra’s designer kept her mother’s memory alive by working with the architecture of her home—but it got a stylish upgrade that reflected Sandra’s style and needs for the space.

“Modsy changed my life. My mother was my best friend. After she died, I was not only heartbroken and grieving, but I was overwhelmed with making my childhood home my own. Every room reminded me of my mother’s presence. My Modsy designer assisted me in transforming every room, giving me a home that feels personalized and special. It’s now a place of peace. I’m grateful for the inspirational design changes that have taken place and will continue to consult with my Modsy designer to enhance the environmental peace in my home.”

“My Modsy designer assisted me in transforming every room, giving me a home that feels personalized and special. It’s now a place of peace.”

Designer Insights:

“Using a white color palette in every room helped create a sense of cohesion throughout Sandra’s home—and definitely showed off her personality.

“In her home office, I added a fur rug to the reading nook to help separate this space from the rest of the office and make it its own cozy section. Since this workspace is in the basement and gets limited natural light, I also added some plants, which bring some life into the space.” –Ciara R., Sandra’s Modsy Designer

The Backstory

When Yates & Liz bought a private farmhouse atop Old Forge Mountain in the Blue Ridge Mountains, they did so with the vision of creating a beautiful vacation rental retreat where guests could hunker down and relax. The house was entirely empty and they needed help coming up with a design that would ensure the interior of the house was as beautiful as its scenic surroundings.

“It was important to us that the entire house be designed all at once because we wanted a cohesive look for the entire space instead of piecemeal looks for the individual spaces that wouldn’t flow together.”

The Design Dilemma

Yates & Liz knew from the beginning that they needed an expert eye to help them achieve the look and feel they wanted for thier farmhouse.

“The space was super large and dated. It easily could have become a hodgepodge mess even with lots of love and great intentions. Getting help from a professional designer was so important.”

Designer insight:

“From the beginning, I knew Yates & Liz wanted the space to function as a vacation rental, so the goal was to make every room cohesive but still fun and inviting. The biggest challenge (though, a really fun one!) was making sure each room had a unique look and feel but that they all still visually worked together as a cohesive whole.” –Becky

The Modsy Moment

When the couple discovered Modsy, they knew they’d found the answer to their design conundrum. Bundling each room into the same project and collaborating with the same designer was exactly what he needed to achieve a cohesive look for his entire farmhouse.

“Once we saw my designer’s plan, we started getting really excited about bringing it to life. We loved that we were able to contribute ideas—like using a green sofa in the main living space—and our designer was able to incorporate them and take the idea to the next level.”

Designer Insights:

“Layering colors and textures is key when you want a cozy, lived in, yet very unique and interesting space. For Yates & Liz’s house, I focused on artfully mixing colors, textures, and materials in a way that made the spaces feel intentional. And speaking of color—the green sofa is one of my favorite parts of the whole design. That, paired with a lot of natural textures in accent chairs and fun pops of colors in rugs is what stole the show!” –Becky

The Real Results

Yates & Liz ended up with an upscale private farmhouse rental with a mid-century-meets-cozy vibe. The house’s relaxed and fun atmosphere makes it easy for guests to soak in the bucolic Blue Ridge Mountains scenery. If you ever find yourself staying there, you’ll have the option of visiting the many nearby towns, but you may find it hard to leave this charming mountain retreat.

“We’re thrilled with how everything turned out. It’s better than we could have imagined, and working with our Modsy designer, Becky, on such a large project helped us achieve what we never could have done on our own.”

My Modsy Story: How I Filled My House with Cozy Curated Style

Without the curatorial skills to create the cozy feel she wanted for her home Deana was left with an empty house and no idea where to get started.

Read on to learn how she filled her empty house with designs she loves and get key insights from the Modsy designer that brought her space together.

headshot of modsy customer

Homeowner: Deana

Room: Whole House

My Style: Rustic Warmth

The Backstory

Deana loves home decorating shows and feels passionate about design. But, like many people, when it came to putting together a new home, she found herself stooped.

“I’m a big fan of HGTV, and I always have strong opinions on every space they do. I’ll either say, “OMG, I love that,” or “ew no, that’s gross,” but I never react impartially to any design. That said, I’m not a decorator, so I’m sure you can imagine that when my husband and I moved from a 425 square ft apartment to a 2,600 square foot house with no furniture, I didn’t know where to start.”

The Design Dilemma

Deana knew 2 things at the outset of her design journey. 1 she had trouble putting a space together alone, and 2 she’d know a good design when she saw it but she needed some outside help to get started. Determined to find a great design for her new home, she started researching online design.

“I’ve never been a natural at getting the home look I am going for. For example, I like a cozy vibe in my spaces, so I tend to overcrowd rooms when I design them on my own.”

“I’ve never been a natural at getting the home look I am going for. For example, I like a cozy vibe in my spaces, so I tend to overcrowd rooms when I design them on my own. But for my new home, I knew I wanted something that felt curated but cozy without being crowded. So I started looking for help online.

My search for interior design services took me to a Facebook group. People there raved about Modsy. After deliberating for a while, I decided to purchase 6 rooms.”

Designer Insights:

“Deana was having trouble selecting and coordinating the right items for her home to create a cohesive look. So I helped her “try on” many different options for her rooms and showed her various wall colors to land on the perfect style for her home.” –Cassandra, Deana’s Modsy Designer

The Modsy Moment

Once she had sent all her Modsy project details, Deana was very excited to see the results.

“I couldn’t picture how things should look on my own. But, when I saw the designs, I was in love!”

“I’ll be honest, I was a little nervous waiting for my Modsy designs to come back. I just wasn’t sure they’d be able to deliver on all my hopes for the space, especially when I couldn’t picture how things should look on my own. But, when I saw the designs, I was in love! They were exactly what I had asked for but couldn’t visualize on my own. I began ordering furniture almost immediately.”

Designer Insights:

“Deana has a really cozy personal style, and I kept that in mind when putting all her rooms together. I wanted to elevate that coziness with some more traditional foundational furniture in each space to really help create a cohesive and inviting feel to her whole home.

For example, in her living room, the sofa and love-seat are from the same Crate & Barrel set. They add a touch of formality to the room, but the armchairs and poufs feel more fun and casual. Together these items create a look that elevates the space without making it feel stuffy.” –Cassandra, Deana’s Modsy Designer

The Real Results

Now that Deana has used Modsy she’s having a real HGTV “OMG I love that” moment of her own.

“I loved my entire Modsy experience, I especially love the design of my bedroom vanity area. My designer used a lovely desk with lots of storage, a cozy highback chair, and a beautiful mirror with mother-of-pearl inlay to bring the space together.”

“I loved my entire Modsy experience, I especially love the design of my bedroom vanity area. My entire life, I’ve gotten ready hunched over a mirror in the corner of my room, and I’ve never had a dedicated space just for getting ready. My designer used a lovely desk with lots of storage, a cozy highback chair, and a beautiful mirror with mother-of-pearl inlay to bring the space together. (I’m a huge fan of pearls, so I was delighted that they included the mirror–it is SO beautiful.) Having a cozy and pampering space like this is incredibly wonderful. It really epitomizes how my whole house feels after using Modsy–like a home.”

Designer Insights:

“It was truly such a pleasure bringing this space together for Deana. It’s wonderful knowing she gets as much joy out of living in her space as I did helping her create it.” –Cassandra, Deana’s Modsy Designer

The Backstory

When we moved into our new house, we had almost no furniture. Our space was kind of sad and empty—but we knew it had great potential! We just weren’t sure what to do with it. We were especially struggling with the entryway area right off the front door. We didn’t want it to be just a large entryway foyer, but we also didn’t want it to be a sitting room. But other than those two options, we didn’t know what else to do with the space!

The Design Dilemma

My husband and I have both been WFH since COVID started and we wanted to make our entryway into a space we both loved since we’re there all the time now. I started digging around Pinterest and came across some great ideas for at-home coffee bars. I’m a food blogger, so I liked the idea of having my passion for good food and drinks inspire this space. The only problem was I couldn’t visualize how the space could come together and I felt overwhelmed by the thought of sourcing all the products and creating a cohesive look and feel on my own. So, I turned to Google, and that’s when I found Modsy!

That extra step gave us clarity on what we wanted and needed for the room.

“I’m so happy with our new space . . . I never would have been able to make our little coffee shop on my own—at least not without some major headaches!”

I can’t tell you what it means to have a space that feels like a daily getaway just a few feet away from my bedroom door. Having an at-home coffee shop/office is really helpful especially during COVID when daily rituals have become so important to creating a sense of security. We feel so blessed to be in this home and are so happy we used Modsy, which we also used to help with our living room and dining room designs because we enjoyed the experience so much—we basically never want to leave any of these spaces!

Kev and I both wanted to make our home feel modern and welcoming so our family could feel at home. We knew we needed an expert opinion to help us get there.

My Modsy Story: How I Found a Style to Complement My Modern Ranch Home

After moving from a traditional house into a home mid-century style ranch house, Samantha struggled to find a modern yet cozy style that worked for the new space.

modsy customer headshot

Homeowner: Samantha March

Location: Des Moines, IA

Room: Living Room

Her Style: Rustic Warmth

Real Customer Story

The Backstory

I’m a literary blogger, make-up vlogger, and author, so I’m not without strengths. However, interior design is just not one of them. So when my husband, puppy, and I moved from our traditional style starter home into a modern ranch house, I knew I needed a little help with the decor. I just didn’t realize how much help I needed until some friends came over, and after seeing our new space with our old things, asked: “So, when are you going to do something with this room?” Ouch!

empty

The Design Dilemma

Because our new house is a Mid-Century-Modern ranch with an open concept, our more traditional furniture looked very out of place. We knew we wanted to stay in the new house longer than our starter home and wanted more “grown-up” modern feeling furniture that fit with space.

In addition to more modern furniture, I wanted the living area to feel cozy and find a way to distinguish it as its own space within the open floor plan. I just had no idea how to make it happen on my own.

Finding style to match your space

The Modsy Moment

I heard about modsy through my sister-in-law, who shared Modsy’s refer a friend program with me to try out the service. I’m so glad I took her advice.

From the moment I saw my designs, I knew I was in love with Modsy—I wish I could try every design they showed me and have a different living room look for each day of the week. But seeing the different design versions in my room virtually was the next best thing!

The Modsy design process was so great! It let me see what the final room would look like before I even purchased anything. The designer even showed me how to “zone” the living space by picking the perfect rug to make it feel cozier with our open floor plan.

Finding style to match your space

How Modsy Helped Samantha

Seeing what my space would look like before purchasing furniture made me feel confident that the furniture purchases I made were the right ones. We liked the process so much I purchased a second package for help on redesigning our primary bedroom!

The Real Results

The room feels completely different. Before our Modsy design, my husband and I were never in our living room, and now we both love sitting in there, watching TV, or reading. Our dog loves the new space too—she’s a big fan of the rug, so she’s not on the cold floor, and the room is so much more inviting and open.

The Backstory

When I moved into my new house, I wasn’t sure what to do with my open living room/dining room. It was totally empty, which offers a great blank slate for design. But I had so many ideas of what I wanted and couldn’t visualize how to bring them all into one space. Honestly, I had no clue how to fill the space.

The Design Dilemma

I’m good at choosing furniture pieces that look good individually, but then I get stuck because they don’t look good together. When it comes to coordinating colors, styles, and overall vibe I get totally lost. When I’ve attempted it in the past, things end up not matching or going together. So, when it came to my new home, I didn’t know where to start and how to choose the furniture for the atmosphere I wanted to create.

The Modsy Moment

Knowing I couldn’t tackle this on my own, I did a quick Google search for solutions—and that’s when I came across Modsy. I loved the designs I saw on Modsy’s website and how flexible they were with taking into account existing furniture. With the ability to see the concept with my actual room and layout, I knew I had found my solution.

How Modsy Helped Carlos

Before working with Modsy, I was frustrated that I didn’t have the design savvy to pull my ideas together and bring them to life in my space. So, I had trouble imagining that Modsy could make the process easy and fun. But I’m happy to report I was wrong! I loved how quickly the initial designs came through and how easy (and fast!) it was to work with my designer to make changes.

The whole process was smooth, quick, and painless—and, best of all, cost-effective. It was so much better than I thought it would be, and with a wonderful result. My designer knew what they were doing. I would have never been able to come up with such a good layout on my own!

The Real Results

I love my new space! It feels really chill and versatile. I can have a nice dinner date at home or enjoy a relaxing cup of coffee in the morning. I love how the living room and dining room feel like different spaces, even though it’s an open layout. But the whole design also feels really cohesive.

I especially love the decorative wine rack and the accent chairs. I would have never thought of something like those wine racks, and guests always comment on how nice they look. And changing out the light fixture made a massive difference in the space. The layout wouldn’t be complete without it!

My designer really captured my style and helped me figure out how to bring in pieces I already had with new furniture and decor that I wouldn’t otherwise have found. The concept is exactly what I was going for.

The Backstory

My husband and I have two sets of twins under the age of two, so to say life is a bit hectic is an understatement!  We had just built a new home, so we decided we needed to decorate the master bedroom first. In our previous home, we decorated the rest of the house and never got around to finishing the master bedroom because our first set of twins arrived, and life got much busier! There were always other things to do or spend our money on. Also, our cat had shredded our previous headboard, so we knew we needed some new furniture anyway.

We wanted our master bedroom to be our sanctuary and between the twins and the cat, we were due a bit of tranquility. However, during the building process, we found out we were expecting our second set of twins. At that point, I was adamant our bedroom would be decorated before the babies arrived, as I would definitely need a peaceful place to grab a few minutes rest now and again!

The Design Dilemma

Since we were building our house, the room was a blank slate—but that actually made it overwhelming, and I wasn’t sure where to start. I generally like colorful, vibrant hues but thought those might be overwhelming in a bedroom. I wasn’t sure how to strike the balance of what I naturally gravitate toward while still making our bedroom a restful place. On top of that, I had one set of twins and was pregnant with another set, so I really didn’t have the bandwidth to think about how to design our master bedroom.

Customer StoryThe Modsy Moment

We used Modsy at our previous home to plan the nursery for our first set of twins. There’s so much I appreciate about Modsy—the 3D renderings, being able to switch out items, the price point! I had such a good experience picking out the layout and decor of the nursery. So, when it came to designing our master bedroom, I was excited to work with a Modsy designer again.

Customer StoryHow Modsy Helped Koula

Our designer helped us land on a layout we love and they picked out furniture that’s beautiful and fits in our space. But I did want to adjust the color palette a bit after getting our initial designs. So, I had a call with my designer, she understood what I wanted right away, and the next design she sent me was perfect, and the one we ended up using.

Customer StoryThe Real Results

I love my master bedroom design. It is exactly the haven I need to escape from the madness of having two sets of twins under the age of two. This space is beautiful and helps remind me of the “me” I was before I was a mom. Our master bedroom isn’t generally a room that other people see, but I really enjoy spending time in my restful sanctuary every day. And even though my husband doesn’t care too much about design and decor, I’m happy he has a relaxing space, too! I would highly recommend Modsy to others.
