Meet the Designer: Talking Boho Prep, Wes Anderson, and the Secret Ingredient for “Good Design” with Angela Lee

The Modsy design network is full of individuals with incredibly diverse backgrounds. Some are formally trained, some are self-taught, and many had established careers in a totally different industry before making their way into the world of interior design. (Kind of like some of our favorite interior designers outside of the Modsy world!) We want to introduce you to some of our talented designers—to help you get to know the people behind the screens!

Want to work one-on-one with one of our talented designers to decorate your home? Start a Modsy design project and get matched with an expert who will show you designs in your exact space in 3D!

Today, meet Modsy designer Angela L!

Angela has been working in the interior design world for nearly a decade, and we were lucky enough to add her to our team of talented designers in the past year. Angela is inspired by design movements of the past—but is always looking forward, constantly discovering new ways to remix old styles.

We (virtually) sat down with Angela to hear more about her personal design style, where she finds inspiration, and design tips she swears by.

A peek inside Angela’s “dream room” designed in Modsy 3D

How did you get into the interior design industry?

“I went to school for interior design and have been working in the industry for the last 10 years.”

How did you find yourself at Modsy?

“During Covid, I quit my corporate office job and needed a break from corporate life. I wanted to work on a more personal and tangible level, where I could actually see and talk with the people who were going to live in and experience the spaces I design.”

Struggling to design your room?

Let our experts show you ideas in your exact room.

How would you describe your personal design style?

“My style was once described as ‘boho prep’ and I’ve stuck to that description ever since. I tend to layer patterns, textures, and rustic or vintage/antique elements. This combination is a staple of bohemian style. I love pairing those things with tailored elements, such as clean lines, simple silhouettes, and crisp finishing, which is typical of a more preppy look. The resulting combination has both a little chaos and a little refinement; ‘refined chaos’ I suppose you could say.”

What is the secret ingredient that you think makes a good design into a great one?

“Time. Good design truly cannot be rushed. It takes time to curate ideas, as well as specific pieces and elements that help a client develop their personal style. And, from a designer’s perspective, there’s no magic number or formula that is going to make a design good. It takes time and experience to truly be able to give someone a thoughtful and purposeful design.”

Where do you get inspiration?

“I like to take inspiration from the large style movements of the past. Each era has given us a wonderful foundation that we can be inspired by. I think that’s why I can’t ever seem to pinpoint one specific style that I’m drawn to—it’s ever-evolving.

“One thing I personally don’t subscribe to are trends. They’re ‘out’ before they’re ‘in,’ no matter how the masses move. I believe that great design stands the test of time and transcends the trends.”

One of Angela’s client mood boards created under her own design firm, Casita Interiors

Do you have a favorite design era or movement?

“I love Victorian interiors; they’re the epitome of maximalism. They used ornate and bold elements with lots of layering. Victorian spaces are robust and extravagant while being inviting and intimate at the same time.

“I also can’t get enough of the Postmodernism and Bauhaus eras. Postmodern interiors are bold and a little wild, and I love the way that this style is being interpreted today. I see people combining classic Postmodern elements with more minimalist interiors; it resonates really well. Bauhaus is the genesis of so many of our favorites today. So many iconic pieces were borne from the Bauhaus movement and are staples in great modern interiors. These style periods are great because they’re not just about interiors—they’re whole movements. They explored the human experience and produced art, interiors, innovation, and changed the way we think, which is why they’re so iconic and influential.

Angela isn’t afraid of a bold design!

What are the 3 design tips you swear by?

  1. Push the envelope and get out of your comfort zone. Do a little research and discover new designers, try that layout you’ve been mulling over, get those paint swatches and try that bold color. You can start small by changing your throw pillows or introduce a color you keep coming back to. Or you can splurge on that piece of great art and buy that antique. Don’t be afraid to mix different styles.
  2. If it feels wrong, there’s only one way to find out if it truly is: try it. There are no wrong answers and no stupid questions. It never hurts to try something, even if you end up changing it!
  3. Start with white walls. Finding a great white paint that works for you is a great way to start fresh and create a blank canvas. There are so many shades and so many variations.

The lobby from The Grand Budapest Hotel—AKA one of the many cinematic interiors Angela loves!

What interior from a movie or TV show would you live in if you could?

“I love the Jacobean and Georgian houses in Atonement and Pride and Prejudice. But I also really love Hogwarts and the grandeur of the Grand Budapest Hotel!”

What’s your interior design pet peeve?

“When people want to warm up blue and grey. They’re probably the most exhaustive colors used currently—everyone has grey floors, walls and sofas. And their primary issue is that it feels cold. But it can be done. Though they’re inherently cool colors, you can warm them up by introducing warm colors to the room. That can be in the form of warm woods, picking a French grey (which is a warmer grey), or finding colors that compliment blue and grey, such as shades or orange or red. Having a color wheel is a great way to see what colors are complementary and naturally work well together.”

living room orange and green

What’s your favorite place to vacation?

“I’ve never been to the same place twice. There are too many places that have so much to offer! I took a cross-country road trip last year and visited so many places, but what specifically sticks in my mind right now is the Rocky Mountain National Park. The golden aspens there turn this amazing bright yellow in September/October.”

What’s the last book you read and enjoyed?

“A book called ‘The Double.’ It’s about a man living a mundane life; he sees someone in a movie who is his doppelganger, and he decides to pursue him. It’s an interesting look at identity and how our experiences define us.”

My Modsy Story: How I Filled My House with Cozy Curated Style

Without the curatorial skills to create the cozy feel she wanted for her home Deana was left with an empty house and no idea where to get started.

Read on to learn how she filled her empty house with designs she loves and get key insights from the Modsy designer that brought her space together.

headshot of modsy customer

Homeowner: Deana

Room: Whole House

My Style: Rustic Warmth

The Backstory

Deana loves home decorating shows and feels passionate about design. But, like many people, when it came to putting together a new home, she found herself stooped.

“I’m a big fan of HGTV, and I always have strong opinions on every space they do. I’ll either say, “OMG, I love that,” or “ew no, that’s gross,” but I never react impartially to any design. That said, I’m not a decorator, so I’m sure you can imagine that when my husband and I moved from a 425 square ft apartment to a 2,600 square foot house with no furniture, I didn’t know where to start.”

The Design Dilemma

Deana knew 2 things at the outset of her design journey. 1 she had trouble putting a space together alone, and 2 she’d know a good design when she saw it but she needed some outside help to get started. Determined to find a great design for her new home, she started researching online design.

“I’ve never been a natural at getting the home look I am going for. For example, I like a cozy vibe in my spaces, so I tend to overcrowd rooms when I design them on my own.”

“I’ve never been a natural at getting the home look I am going for. For example, I like a cozy vibe in my spaces, so I tend to overcrowd rooms when I design them on my own. But for my new home, I knew I wanted something that felt curated but cozy without being crowded. So I started looking for help online.

My search for interior design services took me to a Facebook group. People there raved about Modsy. After deliberating for a while, I decided to purchase 6 rooms.”

Designer Insights:

“Deana was having trouble selecting and coordinating the right items for her home to create a cohesive look. So I helped her “try on” many different options for her rooms and showed her various wall colors to land on the perfect style for her home.” –Cassandra, Deana’s Modsy Designer

The Modsy Moment

Once she had sent all her Modsy project details, Deana was very excited to see the results.

“I couldn’t picture how things should look on my own. But, when I saw the designs, I was in love!”

“I’ll be honest, I was a little nervous waiting for my Modsy designs to come back. I just wasn’t sure they’d be able to deliver on all my hopes for the space, especially when I couldn’t picture how things should look on my own. But, when I saw the designs, I was in love! They were exactly what I had asked for but couldn’t visualize on my own. I began ordering furniture almost immediately.”

Designer Insights:

“Deana has a really cozy personal style, and I kept that in mind when putting all her rooms together. I wanted to elevate that coziness with some more traditional foundational furniture in each space to really help create a cohesive and inviting feel to her whole home.

For example, in her living room, the sofa and love-seat are from the same Crate & Barrel set. They add a touch of formality to the room, but the armchairs and poufs feel more fun and casual. Together these items create a look that elevates the space without making it feel stuffy.” –Cassandra, Deana’s Modsy Designer

The Real Results

Now that Deana has used Modsy she’s having a real HGTV “OMG I love that” moment of her own.

“I loved my entire Modsy experience, I especially love the design of my bedroom vanity area. My designer used a lovely desk with lots of storage, a cozy highback chair, and a beautiful mirror with mother-of-pearl inlay to bring the space together.”

“I loved my entire Modsy experience, I especially love the design of my bedroom vanity area. My entire life, I’ve gotten ready hunched over a mirror in the corner of my room, and I’ve never had a dedicated space just for getting ready. My designer used a lovely desk with lots of storage, a cozy highback chair, and a beautiful mirror with mother-of-pearl inlay to bring the space together. (I’m a huge fan of pearls, so I was delighted that they included the mirror–it is SO beautiful.) Having a cozy and pampering space like this is incredibly wonderful. It really epitomizes how my whole house feels after using Modsy–like a home.”

Designer Insights:

“It was truly such a pleasure bringing this space together for Deana. It’s wonderful knowing she gets as much joy out of living in her space as I did helping her create it.” –Cassandra, Deana’s Modsy Designer

My Modsy Story: How Rachael Created a Polished, Cohesive Design for her Open-Concept Home

Rachael was excited to be living in a new house she loved. But needed help finding a design that was as beautiful as her new space. See how Modsy helped her bring house and home together with a winning design.

Homeowner: Rachael M + Sales & Marketing Manager

Location: Apex, NC

Rooms: Open Living Room & Dining Room

Her Style: Modern Rustic

The Backstory

I recently purchased a newly constructed house with an open floor-plan. Because the living-dining area layout was so open I wanted to make sure the design for the spaces would work together. In the past, I’ve worked with designers which inspired me to want a more polished look in my own home!

Rachael’s new home before

The Design Dilemma

I was excited about moving into my brand new space and really investing in a beautiful, polished design. I knew the overall look I was going for and that I wanted to incorporate unique pieces from different sources into the final look. I’d used blue and grey as the color scheme in my old house, and I knew I wanted this one to have a more neutral palette that complimented the space.

But when it came to actually designing the space, it felt like a huge job and I was just too busy with work. I had no time to shop for furniture, let alone figure out how to pull all the pieces together into a cohesive whole.

new home design modsyThe Modsy Moment

I was actually going to hire an interior designer at first but then I came across Modsy by way of a Google search. The investment to try it was pretty low and I thought why not give it a shot first? From the ads I read, it seemed like I could get the same results with less time and money so I was excited to try it out. Plus, I like being involved in the work but really wanted a designer’s guidance so it seemed like the perfect solution.

new home designHow Modsy’s Designs Helped Rachael

When my first Modsy designs came back I loved them immediately. The design experience was so easy and really fun! Everyone that I interacted with was super helpful and my designer, Francesca, is really talented. She excels at this process and is so personable. She added furniture and room accessories in a way that filled the space nicely. It looks fantastic and it never would have occurred to me to use the space the way she did.

Also, there were certain items I needed help with, like a cabinet that I wasn’t sure how to incorporate into the room. Francesca knew exactly how to manage it! I feel very lucky I got to work with a designer who was such an excellent fit, and who was able to nail my tastes from the start.

Modsy also made the shopping process super easy with one-click ordering from tons of vendors. The follow-up and assistance they provided were awesome! They even price-matched a chair for me and helped me when one of my chairs was damaged in shipping. I am super happy with their customer service!

The Real Results

The Modsy design I went with captured exactly what I was looking for. It was like my designer saw inside my brain on the first try, I couldn’t believe it! I purchased almost all of the items from my design and Francesca helped me design around two pieces that I already owned.

Overall, my living room and dining room are better than I could have imagined. There is no way I could have done it all on my own, but it still feels essentially like me. Thanks, Modsy!

My Modsy Story: Designing a Small, Quirky Apartment to Match the Beauty of San Francisco

quirky apartment

After moving from Sacramento to San Francisco, Katie needed help turning her new small, quirky apartment into a home.

Homeowner: Katie C, Analyst

Location: San Francisco, CA

Room: Bedroom, dining room, and spare room

Her Style: Modern Eclectic

The Backstory

I’d recently moved from Sacramento to San Francisco and I was faced with the challenge of designing a small, quirky apartment. I was super excited about the move and starting a new chapter in San Francisco! I wanted my living space to reflect the same kind of beauty and magic that I saw in the city and was ready to invest in furniture and a design that would make my new apartment feel like home.

Katie’s quirky apartment before

The Design Dilemma

Moving to San Francisco from Sacramento meant a lot of big changes! All of a sudden I was faced with designing a small and janky space with narrow hallways, mixed sized rooms, and multi-purpose spaces. I was totally overwhelmed with no clue how or where to start.

My place was filled with boxes and I couldn’t visualize any ideas for how to possibly make it a home that I would want to spend time. I felt a sense of heaviness that here I was in this amazing, lively city and I didn’t have a clue how I could ever make my living space embody that same energy.

quirky apartment designThe Modsy Moment

I’d never worked with a designer before but I was at such a loss in my new apartment that I knew I wanted to outsource the whole project and work with San Francsico interior designers!

I first came across Modsy on Instagram—which is based in San Francesco but works with people all over the country—I have to admit I was a little skeptical. How could a survey and a few photos could provide enough detail for a designer to be able to create a space that I would love? To top it off, I wasn’t even sure what kind of vision I had in mind, so how could Modsy bring it to life? But at that point, I was ready to try anything so I decided to give it a go.

How Modsy’s Designs Helped Katie

My first reaction to my Modsy designs was total amazement! I loved the designs right from the start—they made me feel so hopeful that my space could be fun and trendy despite all the weird quirks. My designer showed me ideas that I’d never thought of on my own. The entire experience was wonderful. Customer service was super responsive, I got all my designs back really quickly, and the whole project was sensitive to my budget.

I am still purchasing all the items to make my design come to life. It was so awesome that customer service had the ability to be the bridge between my order and the delivery personnel. It was a smooth transition at a really good price point. Modsy totally helped me find the right layout for my different rooms and helped me feel confident that I was purchasing the right things for each space.

The Real Results

The apartment now feels inviting and inspiring—I love it! All the details in the design were a nice compliment to my personal style and the experience gave me more confidence to trust in the interior design experience. I love how my rooms turned out.

When you feel good in a space, you want to spend more time there and my space now truly feels like a home. Thank you, Modsy, for giving me the gift of great design!

My Modsy Story: How I Designed the Grown-Up Apartment Of My Dreams

apartment design

After moving cross-country, Omar was ready to trade in his big box store furniture for a grown-up apartment design.

Homeowner: Omar M, Marketing & Business Development

Location: Los Angeles, CA

Room: Entire Apartment

His Style: Modern Minimalist

The Backstory

I was ready for a new start in Los Angeles after spending 5 years in NYC. My new space is a lot larger than my old apartment so not only did I need more furniture, I also wanted to update my style to create a space that was welcoming, mature, and great for hosting. On top of that, I also wanted to make sure that the apartment design maximized my space and highlighted my new view.

The Design Dilemma

I really hate shopping and can’t visualize ideas in my home so all the furniture I had came from the same store. It looked like something out of a catalog – but in a bad way.

So when I moved it all into my new space, the rooms felt so bland. They were functional but didn’t have a lot of personality. I was totally overwhelmed with no clue how or where to start with a design I’d actually enjoy.

apartment design modsyThe Modsy Moment

I knew I needed help but I’d never worked with an Los Angeles interior design or online design service before. So when I saw an ad for Modsy on Instagram I’ll admit, at first I was skeptical. I wasn’t sure that a complete stranger could bring my “vision” to life. And how could they when I didn’t even know what my vision was myself?

I was also nervous because the apartment was new to both me and the designer so I wasn’t convinced that everything would fit and/or look like how it did in the 3D designs.

apartment design modsyHow Modsy’s Designs Helped Omar

All of my worries were completely put to rest when I saw my Modsy designs for the first time. I was amazed! The 3D designs really impressed me, especially the living room/home office and dining room.

I loved all of the options presented! And my designer was patient, flexible, and honest and I really liked working with her.

My apartment looks amazing now. All of the rooms look great and they mirror my final designs to a tee. I ended up purchasing pretty much everything through Modsy, and the process was super seamless and efficient.apartment design modsy

Moving across the country is stressful but Modsy made the ordering and delivery process really easy. I didn’t have to take any extra steps and I also checked a few items and confirmed that Modsy definitely gave me the best price on all of them.

My Modsy Story: When 3 Interior Designers Couldn’t Help, Here’s What Did

3d modsy design

After working with 3 designers, Caren still didn’t have a plan for her open living/dining room. Here’s what happened when this skeptic turned to Modsy for help.

Homeowner: Caren S, Aesthetic medicine physician

Location: Potomac, MD

Room: Living & Dining Combo Room

Her Style: Discerning Collector

The Backstory

My family and I had recently moved into a new home. The new space was perfect, but our old furniture just didn’t fit right. I wanted a more ‘fresh’ and ‘modern’ look for the new space and decided it was time for a redesign.

And while I can appreciate a well-styled room, I cannot curate a cohesive look on my own. I’ve picked things out that look great online, but they don’t work all together in a room. I’ve also bought furniture in the store, which seemingly looked great, but once I got it home the proportions were all off.

So when it came to redesigning my family’s new home, I knew I needed some help but still wanted to be involved in the design process.

The Design Dilemma

I wound up working with three interior designers, and not finding success with any of them.

The first was an expensive designer, to whom I paid $200/hour only to get advice I wasn’t sure I loved… But I didn’t want to pay another $200 to talk about it! I also tried a moderately-priced designer, and she recommended things that looked great, but turned out to be the wrong dimensions for the room.

Finally, I used a very reasonably-priced designer who was lovely, but her ideas were outside my comfort zone and I hesitated to commit without being sure. In the end, I led her down paths of safety and boredom and didn’t end up implementing any of what we’d worked on.

The Modsy Moment

When I saw ads on Facebook for Modsy, I figured I had nothing to lose. That said, I was definitely skeptical because I wasn’t sure if I’d get a design that looked as good as the one in the ad.

On top of that, I was unsure I’d be able to communicate what my style was, as my personal tastes are so all over the place. I like rustic, modern, worldly, eclectic, minimalist, funkiness, neutrality, color…. Who on earth could actually create a room that satisfied me?

“I felt that this was the start of something very awesome. And it was.”

When I opened my 3D Modsy design I was thrilled! It was so exciting to see my room looking harmonious, homey, beautiful, and “me.” I was overjoyed and felt that this was the start of something very awesome. And it was.

How Modsy’s Designs Helped Caren

The experience was fantastic. With Modsy, I could literally see my exact room, designed in two different and beautiful ways. No guesswork involved regarding, “Would I really like that chair? Would that sofa fit right in the space?”

My Modsy 3D design was so realistic! It was like walking in my room and seeing it exactly as it is in real life, only with totally new furniture.

On top of that, purchasing furniture through Modsy was a great experience. I got the online sale prices plus an extra discount from Modsy.

The Real Results

My Modsy designer managed to create a design that blended my multiple – and seemingly contradictory – design styles. For our new home I wanted something interesting but minimal, colorful but neutral, earthy but modern, funky but simple, bold but classic… I thought that I’d have to settle for just ‘one’ type of style, but Modsy’s designs gave me all these elements in one perfect space!

“I thought that I’d have to settle for just ‘one’ type of style, but Modsy’s designs gave me everything in one perfect space!”

The design for my living/dining room helped me break out of my comfort zone. I bought things that I never would’ve had the guts to purchase on my own.

“It seriously looks exactly like my 3D Modsy design.”

The funky dining chairs were something I never would have looked at in real life, but seeing them in the 3D Modsy design, and how good they looked with the other items in the space, gave me the courage to purchase these whimsical chairs. They now make me smile every time I walk in the room.

My Modsy Story: How I Helped My Daughter Design a Bedroom She Loves

daughter's bedroom

When 9-year-old Lilly was ready for a big girl space, Amie knew she needed help bringing her daughter’s bedroom to life. See how she created the perfect space on the first try.

Homeowner: Amie S, 3rd Grade Teacher and Stay at Home Momma

Location: Bel Air, MD

Room: Daughter’s Bedroom

Her Style: Rustic Traveler

The Backstory

The perfect birthday present for a budding designer

At the end of last year, I decided it was time to redesign my daughter’s bedroom. Lilly was about to turn 9 years old, and for her birthday I wanted to give her the big girl bedroom she was ready for.

And while I really enjoy home design, I can never picture how my ideas will turn out in my actual space. I always know what I like, but struggle to put all the pieces together.

Lilly’s Bedroom Before

The Design Dilemma

She had all the ideas, but struggled to bring them to life

My family and I have lived in the same house for 6 years, and we’ve never found the right layout for Lilly’s room. One wall is all windows, another has a double closet, and there’s also a door to the bathroom. She also has this amazing canopy bed that’s been in our family for years. It’s absolutely gorgeous, but I’ve struggled to find the best way to arrange it in the room.

“My daughter is also herself a budding interior designer… so I knew I might need some extra help when it came to designing her bedroom.”

Lilly is also herself a budding interior designer. She knows what she wants and is not afraid to tell you her opinion, good or bad, so I knew I might need some extra help when it came to designing her bedroom.

When I saw an ad for Modsy somewhere on social media, I decided to give it a go. I was a little skeptical because no one I knew had ever tried it before, so it definitely felt like a gamble.

The Modsy Moment

The perfect design and a priceless reaction

When I opened up our first Modsy design, it was honestly exactly what I’d imagined. I wanted to create a fun, functional space where she could hang out with friends and do homework, and our Modsy designer totally nailed it. Honestly, I barely glanced at our second design because the first one was everything we were looking for.

“Honestly, I barely glanced at our second design because the first one was everything we were looking for.”

When my daughter got home from school, I showed her the design and she burst into tears. I asked her why she was crying, and she said because she was so happy! As a future designer (seriously, she can put a design together better than me), she said it was everything she was dreaming about. Seeing Lilly’s reaction to her Modsy design was truly priceless.

How Modsy’s Designs Helped Amie and Lilly

Unlocking new ideas for an old space

From the day I started the process, it was super easy. I took all the measurements and photos required and about a week later I had my Modsy designs in my inbox.

“When my daughter got home from school, I showed her the design and she burst into tears.”

Lilly’s and my favorite part of the design was the placement of her bed. After we signed up, Modsy let us send in photos and dimensions and they made a custom model of her exact bed so we could see it in her new design. We’ve seriously tried it in every other spot, but never thought to place it where our Modsy designer did, and it’s really just perfect.

We also loved the cute rug they placed in the room. Her room has carpet, so I never thought to put a rug on top, but it pulls the whole space together and just makes it look so cozy.

The Real Results

Getting the slumber party seal of approval

Now Lilly’s space looks amazing. It was so great to see ideas for her room that I would have never thought of on my own and feel confident in the purchases we were making.

Modsy really nailed exactly what both of us were looking for. Lilly can be hard to please, but she’s had 2 friends over for sleepovers already, and they have not left her room.

My Modsy Story: How I Designed My New Home Before Moving In

designing a new home Lauren wanted to design her family’s new home before they moved in. The only problem? She couldn’t be in the space to design it. See how finding Modsy on Instagram helped her take on designing a new home, virtually.

LAUREN’S OPEN LIVING SPACE BEFORE

The Backstory

Designing a new home and wanting it furniture-ready by move-in

We’d just purchased a new family home, and I wanted to have a design plan before we moved in. I wanted us to be able to order furniture ahead of time so we could turn our new place into a bright and beautiful home right away.

The Design Dilemma

Not having access to their new home right away to make design decisions

We’d just purchased our new home but didn’t have access to it yet. Designing the space was a huge struggle as we couldn’t visualize how furniture would look. Not to mention we couldn’t keep going back in to measure and make sure everything would work (or fit!) the way we wanted. It was like we were designing a new home in the dark.

To top it all off, the new space isn’t very big so we needed it to feel open and bright. We wanted to tie the entry, living room, and dining area together while still making them feel like three distinct spaces.

The Modsy Moment

Scrolling for inspo on and finding a solution to her dilemma

I came across Modsy in an Instagram Ad and thought I should give it a try. It was very easy to get started.

How Modsy’s Renderings Helped Lauren

Designing a new home before move-in day

In our first Modsy designs, the designers had come up with some interesting ideas we hadn’t thought of before. We ended up incorporating some of them into our final design.

The first design we got from Modsy gave us a lot direction for our project. We were able to incorporate some things that we already owned (like our sofa and dining table) to save money.

We had planned to put a large hutch in our entryway, but the Modsy design gave us another idea.

The design plan inspired us to try a leather bench and hanging mirror with an open shelf on the adjacent wall. It made the entry seem more open and the furniture Modsy selected helped to tie the rooms together.

We created a few more Modsy designs (we had seven in total!) until we landed on one that was exactly what we wanted. Modsy’s renderings looked exactly like our space in real life. Seeing real furniture we could buy in our space made designing a new home so much easier.

So far, we’ve purchased the bench, mirror, and some accent decor from our first design. We swapped out a few other items in our final design that we’ve also purchased.

It was amazing to see how using smaller and slimmer furniture with glass and mirrors helped to open up and brighten the space.

In the end, the final design was our favorite and most reflects what the room is looking like!

Throughout the process we told so many friends about it that are buying houses, and we even showed our realtor how we were redesigning the space! Seeing how our new home could look, before we even moved in, has made the whole process so much easier.

My Modsy Story: How I Designed My Unique Living Room All Online

online home design

When Annika and her family moved into their first home, designing their unique living room was a major challenge. See how an online home design tool helped her find her inner designer.

Homeowner: Annika C, Recruiter

Location: Northern California

Room: A spacious central living room with unique features

Her Style: Modern Rustic

The Backstory

Leaving the city and starting fresh in their first real home.

My husband and I just purchased our first home. We were relocating from an apartment in Berkeley, CA, to a family house in a small town a little farther away.

We like our home to be tidy with minimal clutter (ie. we don’t like a lot of “things”). I wanted our new space to be warm, inviting, and family-friendly. We have an adjoining dining room and kitchen, so I wanted to create flow between those spaces.

ANNIKA’S LIVING ROOM BEFORE

The Design Dilemma

Figuring out baby-friendly furniture and a design plan with the help of online home design.

We have a 14 month old, so it was important to me that the space was child friendly. That meant avoiding side tables that she could push over and hard edges that she could bump into. I was super interested in ideas for extra storage so that we could take out or stash toys as needed.

As a busy mom who works full-time, I rely a lot on the internet for online purchases. Buying home decor online is always tricky because you never know exactly how it’s going to look in the space. Not to mention returns are a pain when the item is large. And although I love being in spaces that are stylish and inviting, I don’t have a flair for decorating.

When I set out to design our new living room, I wanted someone else’s help finding inspiration. But I didn’t want to stray so far that the style didn’t feel like me. I also wanted the freedom to swap out items in my designs if they weren’t quite right.

The Modsy Moment

When a friend found success designing her own space online, she was sold.

A friend of mine, who was closing on a home, told me how amazing Modsy was. She raved about how she was able to design her new living room from her computer. We’d just put the offer in on our house, and while I had some decorating ideas, the living room in particular had me stumped.

Making the transition from the apartment to our first home was definitely a process. With all that new space, I knew we’d need to buy many items to fill it up. I thought that Modsy would be a great way for me to play with different ideas so that I could see the final product before committing to any big purchases.

Once I started, I found it very easy to use. We wanted to keep our sofa, and I sent Modsy a link to the exact product which they incorporated into our designs.

How Modsy’s Renderings Helped Annika

Seeing the perfect layout and building on furnishings that match her style.

I was eager and anxious to see the designs! And it was surreal! It was our living room, but it was fully decorated and looked amazing.

From the two designs Modsy gave us, I loved Design #1 the most. The layout perfectly fit our needs and it gave me some great ideas for the space. I took the layout from the first design and made some tweaks when it came to the actual products.

We kept our couch and decided to keep our coffee table as well. It’s a hand-made piece by my father and is really beautiful, so we decided we couldn’t part with it. I was able to include a similar coffee table in my Modsy designs. This helped me get a sense of how it would look in our living room with the new pieces I was trying.

I made some other edits to Design #1, including a darker carpet because I have a toddler. The original design was a great source of inspiration. It was the calm, uncluttered but still warm, and stylish look I wanted.

Designing Around Unique Features

Finding solutions for her home’s unique features.

Our living room has a unique feature—a round window that is quite prominent. It was amazing to see how Modsy paired other round elements (i.e. a round coffee table, a round mirror) that really complimented the window. I was also able to see that certain chairs that I was eyeing didn’t fit our space at all.

One item that I fell in love with in particular was a shelving unit that attached to the wall. It was in an area of the living room that had stumped me, and as soon as I saw it I knew it was a perfect fit for the space.

I also loved it because it’s super child-friendly for my toddler. She can’t pull the unit down from the wall, and I can store non-breakable items on the lower shelves. The more delicate items can go on the top, which means we don’t have to hide all our breakables away until she gets older.

The wall directly across from our couch is quite large and that is where we have the TV. I didn’t know how much or how little to decorate, but the design that we received was perfect. It’s balanced and stylish without overwhelming the space.

It was so helpful to see how things fit in the space, size and style wise, without having to spend a lot of time measuring and trying to visualize how something “might” look.

Modsy was amazing and a really fun experience. It helped me find my “inner decorator” as I can experiment with my space and see what looks great and what doesn’t.

My Modsy Story: I Have a Vision, But Will It Work In Real Life?

Design Vision - Modsy customer story

Hillary wasn’t sure how her design vision would look in real life – her husband wasn’t convinced either. See how they avoided huge fights with some help from Modsy.

The Backstory

Starting with a blank slate in a brand new home

I recently made the move with my family from Jersey City to a new house in Pennsylvania. Our new home was under construction, but I wanted to start planning for the space early. Ultimately, I wanted to feel clear and excited about the look of my space before I spent a dollar on furniture.

The Design Dilemma

She had a design vision, but what if it didn’t work in real life?

My biggest challenge was not knowing if my furniture combos would look as good in real life as they did in head. I find it challenging to stick to one style, so often they did not. More importantly, my husband is not the best visualizer so I struggle to explain my vision to him.

The Modsy Moment

Feeling skeptical, but deciding to take a chance

I first saw Modsy in a Facebook ad. I’m able to visualize pretty well, so I was not sure if Modsy would help me. I decided to give it a try and it was pretty easy to get started.

How Her Modsy Designs Helped Hillary

Realizing her vision and knowing what works—for both her and her husband

The renderings were breathtaking for me; I loved both designs that Modsy came up with. It was like I was a contestant on an HGTV show seeing my new place for the first time and it was beautiful! Seeing the furniture in my space made a huge difference – especially since my home was under construction

Modsy also helped me show my husband my ideas. Instead of exploding into huge fights I can show him my vision. Modsy was so helpful for improving our communication.

I was also in search of a particular feeling – comfortable yet edgy, interesting but functional. And Modsy nailed it!

I loved elements in both of my Modsy designs and did some editing when I found things I wanted to try.

Design #2 expanded my thinking about what would work in the space and had more of the vibe I’d imagined. The round dining table was beautiful and unexpected. And the leather couch – so cool!

Design #1 was closest to what I had in mind from the beginning – very comfortable and very functional. The way Modsy arranged the sectional in this first design showed me I could use the room as one big gathering space rather than two separate areas. I also loved the wine rack and the placement of the TV.

With Design #1 I was able to see how the furniture in my mind would actually look in my space. I realized some of the pieces I was eyeing were actually quite large, so I found alternatives that better fit the space.

Design Vision - Modsy customer storyHILLARY’S MODSY DESIGN #1

The decorations in both designs gave me some great new ideas. I combined ideas from the designs I created with some from my original Modsy designs.

The best part for me was being able to play around and try things. I saw how all these pieces would look in my home without having to buy (and likely return) a single thing. My husband also appreciated this. We’ve bought some furniture and there are a few pieces I’m eyeing but haven’t pulled the trigger on yet.
