Art Deco – Design Movement to Design Trend

art deco styleYou may or may not follow – or be a fan of – trends, but they probably show up in your life (or your Instagram feed) in some way. No matter how you felt about millennial pink, or weather you’re backing the mcm trend (obsession) years later, trends play a role in how we choose to decorate our homes.

Interior design trends, like any trend, evolve organically, and tend to follow patterns. To scope out which trends are on the horizon, the Modsy style team travels every year to the Las Vegas Market. There, they scour the market to find new furniture, retailers, and looks we love for the upcoming season.

art deco styleArt Deco, a Brief History

If you don’t know what exactly “art deco” is, don’t worry – you’ve likely seen it somewhere before (the lavish interiors of the Great Gatsby, for example). A style that’s all about luxury and drama, Art Deco gives us all that and more, always in an unexpected way.

The Art Deco movement originated in the 1920s and 1930s. Beginning in France, the style paired newly developed materials with luxurious ones – think ivory, mahogany, and shagreen alongside chrome and plate-glass.

With the dawn of Art Deco, furniture and decor moved beyond just function and transformed into sculptures that mimicked architecture. It was all about smooth and streamlined surfaces, vertical lines, and geometric patterns such as zigzags, chevrons, and starbursts.

In the 1930s, the style gained popularity in America as the look was associated more and more with technology and the future. Art Deco artists and architects celebrated the idea of modern life through their use of new materials and emphasis on luxury.

Art Deco as a Trend

If you follow trends you know that they tend to repeat themselves. As such, it’s not surprising that this isn’t the first time we’ve seen a re-emergence of Art Deco. Most recently, the style enjoyed a revival in the 80s, which involved a lot of black marble and brass.

Both of these elements are now back in fashion, but we’re also seeing new elements unique to 2018.

So what does the Art Deco style look like today? In furniture, we’re seeing a lot pieces with sculptural lines, both curved and geometric. In rugs, wallpaper, and upholstery, geometric patterns echoing some of the great Art Deco designs are plentiful. Rather than whitewashed woods, which were popular with the Farmhouse Chic look, 2018’s Art Deco favors burl woods with their rich, grainy patterns.

Overall the Art Deco style is all about high contrast and dramatic spaces. If you’re ready to try the trend, look for furniture in rich materials, like velvets, leathers, marbles, and concrete. Finish it off with accents in chrome or brass, and don’t be afraid to incorporate statement pieces with fringe, decorative inlay, or smoked glass.

What Modsy styles make the best match for Art Decor interiors? We’d say Less is More Chic, the Chic Collector, and Industrial Chic will all have a great time with art deco!

Fall 2018 Trendspotting – Home Decor Trends from the Las Vegas Market

Meet Alessandra Wood, the Director of Style at Modsy. With a PhD in Design History and an M.A. in the History of Decorative Arts and Design, she is a bona fide design expert in all things interior design. Fresh off a trip to the Las Vegas Market, we picked her brain on what’s sure to be trending this fall in interior design.

Sometimes, what happens in Vegas doesn’t stay there. For example, Modsy’s style and merchandising team just got back from the Las Vegas Market, and with us, we’re bringing all the Fall decor trends for 2018.

A furniture and decor conference that happens every January and July, “going to market” is what designers do every season. This is how we see the latest furniture and decor collections from our partners and discover new vendors for the season. We scour the industry to find the best quality, style, and price for everything we include in your Modsy designs.

And, of course, we do a little trend spotting (or better yet, forecasting) while we’re there. Across the different showrooms and retailers, we spied several key fall decor trends over and over. Our predictions are in.

Ready to get an early look at some of the fall 2018 decor trends you’ll likely be seeing all over the place? Keep scrolling for my predictions, and a look at what’s sure to be trending in our Fall 2018 Modsy designs.

fall 2018 decor trendsTextured Neutrals

Neutrals are everywhere! If you’re thinking “oh great, more bland neutrals,” think again. This season, it’s all about neutrals that pack a punch with texture.

Get ready for materials like linen, vintage velvet, jute, and fringe. And if you’re embracing neutrals, be sure to layer in different textures to keep your space from feeling flat.

We’re also seeing a resurgence of white-washed, weathered wood. A lighter, cool-toned wood, it’s great for creating a beachy or vintage feel inside any space.

The texture trend continues in seating.

Woven seats are all the rage. Whether it’s cord, caning, leather, or rattan, retailers are showing off seating with a gorgeous weave.

2018 has seen its fair share of statement trends, but the year isn’t over yet.

Enter sculptural pieces, a trend that’s taking statement-making to the next level.

What are sculptural pieces? Think furniture, lighting, or decorative accessories that have a sculptural quality. Often geometric in form, these sculptural pieces are works of art in and of themselves.

As a design historian, I love a lot of design movements. But Art Deco with its curves, geometry, and unexpected drama is, hands-down, one of my favorites.

This fall keep an eye out for furniture and accessories that mimic the hallmarks of deco architecture. Bold and dramatic, these pieces sport geometric patterns and sophisticated curves, and are often rendered in brass or other luxurious materials.

fall 2018 decor trendsEarthy Palettes

While we still can’t get enough of neutrals, this fall we’ll also see a introduction of saturated, earthy colors.

Think burnt sienna, saddle, rust, mossy green, and subdued blues. These hues, while rich and saturated, have a slightly toned-down quality to them and won’t feel overpowering. They also layer beautifully to create a warm and cozy feel in any space.
