Tis the season for overnight guests and visiting out-of-towners. And if you’re lucky enough to be named the host with the most extra bedrooms, you might be feeling more stressed than jolly.
But fret not, the secret to stress-free hosting isn’t skipping town for the holidays (although a New Year’s beach vacation is definitely on our wish list), it’s a well-prepped guest room that’s sure to impress.
Since you probably already are familiar with the guest room basics like a bed frame, comfy mattress, and clean linens, here are 7 of our favorite ways to whip your guest room into shape, all before your in-laws arrive.
1. Set up a place to unpack
After they lug their suitcase up the stairs, your guests will appreciate having a place to park their luggage and unpack. Try placing a bench or a pair of poufs at the foot of the bed. This also doubles as a great place for them to take shoes off or get ready for the day.
2. Keep guests feeling cozy
No matter the season, give your guests the hotel treatment by readying your guest room with a basket stocked with extra linens, pillows, and blankets. Think cozy cashmere throws, cable-knit blankets, and fluffy pillows for winter, or linen sheets and cotton throws for the warmer seasons.
3. Dress to impress
Sometimes it’s those big finishing touches that truly round out the guest room ambiance. A full-length mirror is just the accent piece that brings a luxe look and feel to the space. Place one against a wall for your guests to use while they get dressed for breakfast or dinner.
4. Start a conversation with art
Tell your story to visitors through the art and objects you display in your home. While this might not seem like an essential, showcasing unique art and accessories is a great way to make your guests’ stay more memorable. Not sure what to pick? Think about choosing pieces that will spark a conversation – photographs from your trip to Iceland? Perfect. A woven basket that looks better on the wall than in the kitchen? Yes please!
5. Make storage easy
Set your guests up for success with a handy place to stash clothes, toiletries, and even surprise hostess gifts (wishful thinking?). A stylish dresser and pair of nightstands is a great place to start! Also consider pulling in a woven hamper for your guests to easily toss used towels and linens. This simple addition majorly ups the hospitality factor.
6. Ensure ample lighting
Place a pair of reading lamps on the nightstands, but don’t forget to think about lighting for the rest of your guest room as well. Sconces above a dresser or on the wall opposite the bed can be a light-touch way to add more sources of illumination, while a floor lamp by a window will cast a warm glow that can help cozy up the ambiance for your guests.
7. Make room for personal space
Give your guests a place to relax and unwind with a cozy reading nook or desk area. This is a great, no-pressure way for them (and you) to enjoy some personal space during their visit. Add a bookcase with old and new tomes for guests to peruse, and even include a tray stocked full of goodies like coffee, tea, and snacks. It’s these finishing elements that can truly make a space feel homey for visitors.
