The Home Office: Here’s How The Office Characters’ Work-From-Home Set-Ups Would Look in 2020

With offices closed across the country, many of us have been working from home for months. Some of us probably miss those co-workers-turned-friends, while others of us might be quite content not running into certain people at meetings and in the break room.

All these thoughts of office politics got us thinking—how would Michael Scott and the gang be handling working from home during the Shelter in Place ordinances?? (In Michael’s case, probably not-so-gracefully.) So, we challenged our Modsy designers to imagine the work-from-home set-ups of our favorite characters from The Office!

Keep reading to see how Michael, Dwight, Jim and Pam, and Kelly would decorate their home offices in 2020!

Michael Scott’s Home Office

Imagine Michael Scott while he was still the regional manager of Dunder Mifflin, but dropped into the 2020 pandemic. There would be no more last-minute meetings in the conference room. No avoiding work by wandering out into the office and testing out a couple new “that’s what she said” jokes. No hosting birthday parties every other week. We imagine that an extended bout of working from home would take quite an emotional toll on “the world’s best boss.” But we’d bet that there are quite a few spur-of-the-moment Zoom calls happening each day…

Michael’s Style

By 2020, Michael would have converted one of the spare bedrooms in his townhouse into a home office—gravitating toward transitional style with quirky touches. He would want his home office to feel cool—but he definitely wouldn’t be able to pull off a look that’s too edgy.

As someone who loves to combine work and play, his workspace is completely functional but his bookcases are filled with more “fun” items than work-related supplies—including his many Dundie awards, a magic set, and a whiteboard for motivational quotes. Always a nostalgic softie at heart, he’d also bring home Pam’s painting of the office and burn Jan’s candles (much to Holly’s dismay).

In the hopes that someone (other than Dwight) would swing by for a visit, we imagine he would have a carved hand-shape chair for them to sit in—and undoubtedly laugh his head off every time someone used it. Ultimately, his home office is all about feeling approachable and casual, since he always wants to be viewed as a best friend and a boss. (For the record, we’re pretty sure he’d be the first in the office to get coronavirus.)

The OfficeDwight Schrute’s Home Office

In 2020, Dwight wouldn’t mind working from home. In fact, he’d prefer it. The Schrutes always had superior immune systems—but there would be no point in mixing with the degenerates in the office who would just disease the rest of them. What he can’t figure out is how Jim continues to prank him, even from a distance—and now he can’t just run into Michael’s office or submit his weekly complaint with HR.

Dwight’s Style

It’s no surprise that Dwight’s home office would have a very rustic Colonial farmhouse vibe. He was always proud of his old farmhouse and loved furniture with solid construction—specifically if it was made by the Pennsylvania Dutch!

He would undoubtedly have a solid desk in his office, positioned in a place of power. That’s why his desk would be floating and facing out into the room, with the stone fireplace behind him, a tiger rug beneath him, and the ability to look out over his “kingdom” (aka his beet farm) and make sure Mose doesn’t get himself into trouble throughout the day. And, for moments of repose, he’d have a simple rocking chair where he could sit and dream of someday becoming regional manager of Dunder Mifflin Scranton.

A lover of all things old, he’d also have nods to the past within his office—candlesticks, tractor gears on the wall, artwork of German bridges. And, of course, he’d have a few personal objects as well, like his Harry Potter wand, his Dundie awards, and, of course, his name plaque and Dwight bobblehead, which he was sure to grab before the office shut down!

Jim & Pam Halpert’s Home Office

Jim and Pam couldn’t be happier to be working from home together. They’re actually able to get work done without Michael constantly interrupting them—leaving much more time for scheming creative ways to prank Dwight from a distance. Plus, Pam no longer has to agonize over who left the microwave in such a mess (there’s only Jim to blame) and they also get to spend time with their children throughout the day, which they love.

Jim & Pam’s Style

We’re pretty sure Pam would be all in with a Chip and Joanna Gaines-inspired rustic farmhouse office in 2020. So, for their work-from-home set-up, we imaging Pam would have created a crisp, bright, and happy space that’s also cozy and family-friendly.

It’s a practical space, with side-by-side desks, but designed in a way that reflects both Jim and Pam’s passions and hobbies. And, though they have matching desks, they each have a chair that suits their personality. With personal photos, some sports memorabilia, a space for painting, and even the teapot Jim gave Pam for Christmas all those years ago, this is a space that’s personal and inviting.

Kelly Kapoor’s Home Office

Let’s be real: in 2020, Kelly Kapoor is probably long gone from Dunder Mifflin. Instead, she’s likely using her style savvy to run the influencer program at a tech fashion start-up. After all, she’s always known what’s hot.

Kelly’s Style

Kelly is bold and fun—so it’s no surprise that her home office is a reflection of that. Would you expect anything less than a glam, chic, and bold feminine space for Dunder Mifflin’s resident Business B*tch? In 2020, Kelly would definitely still be dedicated to style, trends, and all things chic and modern. Her office is the manifestation of those things with a bold rug, pink upholstered chair, and chic acrylic desk.

With Ryan still at her beck and call, she often hosts “fashion shows at lunch” to show off her latest shopping finds and favorite trendy looks. And you know she’s the queen of Zoom happy hours!

Friends Reunion Special: Reimagining the Interiors of the Hit 90s Show

WHOOOOPAH! We couldn’t be more thrilled about the upcoming Friends reunion special slated to start filming later this year. Thinking about the gang being together again has gotten everyone at Modsy super excited. Like most people, we’re to know what the gang’s been up to over the last (gasp) 16 years. With this in mind, we thought it would be fun to imagine what kinds of spaces they might be living in and share them with you.

We hope that these designs provide the daily perk you’re looking for! And, if you feel like you need a refill of Friends related cheer, feel free to check out how we reimagined the Friends apartment in 2018!

Monica and Chandelier’s  “Breezy” Upstate  Haven

We imagined that Monica and Chandler’s Westchester home would be bright and airy with rustic touches of shiplap and exposed beams. True to her 20s style, Monica would still be into more traditional furniture that’s put together, comfortable, and set up to host friends. A second sofa and pair of chairs allow her to entertain a larger group of friends perhaps one with partners and children in tow. Stylistically we chose a pair of roll arm sofas in a classic blue fabric that adds color without going overboard.

The color scheme is inspired by her vintage Jouets poster, which she has proudly on display on her bookshelves. The coffee table is a nod to her original weather wood table, but it includes storage to keep everything neat and tidy with a cookbook on display. Symmetry and an overall organized feel would be key to keeping her Type A personality happy. In the background, you’ll see her chef jacket hanging and tennis racquet as we think her competitive streak for ping pong would translate well to tennis matches in her Westchester community.

Emma’s All-Grown-Up College Dorm

We imagined that Rachel and Ross’ daughter, Emma’s room would be a quintessential Gen Z space with a cool, collected vibe and pieces that remind her of her parents. Since it’s a dorm room, the base furniture would be pretty simple, but she would layer on her personality with accessories. A lover of fashion like her mom, she’d incorporate an influencer essential—a clothing rack—to display favorites from her vintage clothing collection. A pair of Joan and David boots would be key (thanks, Rachel!)

On her desk, she keeps a baby picture of her and her mom and a dinosaur stuffed animal that Ross gave her when she was little. She has a poster of a vintage Paris luggage tag, a nod to her favorite city outside of New York, a love she inherited from her mom. A lover of travel, Emma has a cork globe to track all of the places she’s been and dream of all the places she’ll visit.

Friends ReunionJoey’s “How You Doing” Bachelor Sanctuary

Joey, the quintessential bachelor is still living in Greenwich Village—in Monica’s old apartment to be exact. Sentimental as he is, he couldn’t bear to leave behind the place that formed so many of his favorite memories—after all, sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name and they’re always glad you came. He updates the look and feel with some gray paint, to make it a bit more masculine and a place of his own. His style is minimal, yet comfortable. With a gallery wall of a few of his favorite pictures, including when he was on the cover of Soap Digest, Joey pays homage to his favorite friends.

While he’s gotten rid of his favorite recliner, he’s upgraded to a sofa with a chaise so he can recline all the time or cuddle up with a new girlfriend. Pat the dog obviously still has a place in his apartment. Huggsy, Joey’s bedtime penguin pal sits on his director’s chair as 2020 Joey isn’t embarrassed anymore. Instead of a dining table, Joey has a foosball table, so he’ll still hover over the counter to eat his Cap’N Crunch.

Phoebe and Smelly Cat’s Country Retreat

Phoebe has finally made it out of the city where she can run freely in the countryside, arms flailing and all, without the judgment of Central Park joggers. Her home is a whimsical cottage and an eclectic collection of all of her favorite things. Before moving in she burned sage to ensure any negative energy was cleansed and any ghosts freed. Her bedroom is painted Basil by Sherman Williams, a calming and serene color. In the mornings she sips coffee from a big yellow mug in bed that reminds her of the days she used to spend in Central Perk with her friends.

While she has purchased a few new items, her bedroom has a vintage leather chair where she sits and writes new songs, and an antique dresser. On top of the dresser, she keeps a scented candle that she never lights for fear of setting off the fire alarm. Her bookshelves are filled with vintage books and ones from the literature course she took at the New School as well as a little stuffed cat that she calls Smelly.

Where Are They Now? Reimagining the Iconic Friends Apartment for 2018

Does anyone else feel like it was just yesterday that we were watching the series finale of Friends? It might seem crazy, but it’s been a whopping 14 years since the show’s finale aired, on May 6, 2004. Time flies when you’re watching Friends reruns! But who’s counting, anyway? To celebrate the show’s 14th anniversary, our Modsy design team re-imaged how the iconic Friends apartment might look today.

When we last saw them, all six of our friends were turning in the keys to that purple apartment and heading their separate ways. The greatest question left unanswered at the end of the show? Sorry Ross and Rachel, we’re most curious about what happened to that purple apartment?

What would the space look like today? To celebrate the show’s 14th anniversary (and to satisfy some of these burning questions) we signed the gang up for a Modsy design package and got to work designing the iconic Friends apartment in Modsy 3D.

See how we reimagined the Friends apartment for 2018.

Monica & ChandlerFriends Apartment – Monica and Chandler

When we last saw them, Monica and Chandler were happily married and raising their adopted twins, Jack and Erica. But what if they hadn’t decided to move out of the city? Would their apartment still sport those purple walls and eclectic mix of furnishings? If we had to guess, Monica and Chandler would have kept the original style of the place, but given it an upgrade.

Their style in Modsy’s terms? Our money is on Rustic Warmth. A look blends contemporary furniture with rustic accents, we think this Modsy style would appeal to Monica’s eclectic taste and Chandler’s need for comfort.

TOUR MONICA + CHANDLER’S 2018 TAKE ON THE FRIENDS APARTMENT

We updated the walls to a neutral color but kept a purple accent wall to pay homage to the space’s history. Monica still likes a more eclectic space, and the pair kept some of their favorite pieces from the “good old days.” (Can you spot the Laurel & Hardy poster, Rachel’s Jouets print, and the famous pickle jar?)

The apartment’s new look shows off Monica’s penchant for plants, comfy furniture, and eclectic accessories. But it has been 14 years so she and Chandler worked together to create a home that reflects them as a couple.

RachelFriends Apartment Rachel Green

But we all know what really happened in the series finale. Monica and Chandler moved with their adopted twins to a home in Westchester. And it’s not too much of a stretch to assume Rachel might have taken over their lease.

While we were all left uncertain about the future of her and Ross (will they or won’t they?), there’s nothing uncertain about the future of that rent-controlled apartment. We don’t know for sure what happened to the couple, but we imagined she moved in to the apartment solo, along with her daughter Emma.

TOUR RACHEL’S 2018 TAKE ON THE FRIENDS APARTMENT

Rachel’s style is what we’d call Less is More Chic. It’s a look that pairs all things glamorous with simple and clean styling. It’s easy to imagine Rachel, with her background in fashion, gravitating towards trends like knockout millennial pink, plush velvet, and marble.

Her version of the apartment would have been a sophisticated place for the gang to gather, drink wine, and reminisce about the old days.

JoeyFriends Apartment Joey

Last but not least – Joey! After moving back from LA, we imagined Joey would have jumped at the chance to take over the friends apartment. Would he have turned it into a bachelor pad worthy of its own GQ profile? We thought so.

We paired Joey with our Modsy Atomic Industrial style. The look mixes mid-century pieces with industrial accents, for a place is full of wood, metals and leathers. Don’t forget the man cave touches from his old place with Chandler that Joey surely would have rescued from storage!

TOUR JOEY’S 2018 TAKE ON THE FRIENDS APARTMENT

His foosball table, dart board, and Hugsy are all parts of the apartment’s new look. Always the sentimental one, Joey also kept Dr. Drake Ramoray’s magazine cover and, of course, Pat the dog!

Joey’s 2018 apartment would be the destination hang out for the boys to watch the game in their overpriced joggers. Or, knowing Joey, an impressive place to bring dates for a night cap.
