My Modsy Story: Rethinking an Entire Home (Now That the Kids Are Off to College)

As a new empty nester, Lori Breningmeyer seized the moment to redo her family’s home of 19 years.

Homeowner: Lori Breningmeyer, project manager and new empty nester

Location: Tallahassee, FL

Room: Odd “Catchall” Den and College Son’s Small Bedroom

Her Style: Modern Rustic

The Backstory

The kids are all grown up, so it’s time to redecorate

My husband and I live with our dog (a whippet-lab mix from the pound) in an old 1949 house in Tallahassee, FL, that we’ve lived in for 19 years. We have two adult children who also spent most of their childhood here.

It’s important to me that my home look intentionally decorated, eclectic, and interesting. I also want it to be comfortable and inviting.

The Design Dilemma

How to take style up a notch in two odd rooms

My first project with Modsy was our den. It’s always been a “catchall” room in our home. For 10 years there was a ping pong table in the center so it was easy to just forget about it. Then my kids went to college, we got rid of the ping pong table, and I had no idea what to do with this huge odd room.

My second project was redoing my son’s room into a guest room which is the smallest bedroom in the house. It’s always been a challenge because there’s too little room in there to do anything with.

The Modsy Moment

Taking one last chance—after wasting money on three online design services

Modsy came up in my Facebook feed probably because I am constantly Googling “design advice.” I was skeptical so I ignored it the first time I saw it because my experiences with three other online design consultant services was a waste of money. But the use of the 3D tool stuck in my head as a new method that might be more successful for me.

When Modsy popped up in my feed again a week or so later, I made sure to click on it this time. When I saw the transformation of the small apartment featured in the link I clicked on I knew I had to give it a try.

When I saw how Modsy uses the actual configuration and measurements of my space and that with the 3D tool you can see how everything looks in your space, I became optimistic that this time might be different.

How Modsy’s Renderings Helped Lori

Discovering new design ideas she never considered in 19 years

My jaw literally dropped when I saw the renderings. It is MY home on the screen only with really cool interesting furnishings and decor. I was blown away with each project. My house has always looked nice, but never quite as good as I wanted it to. There were elements of it that worked, but none of the rooms were completely styled to my satisfaction until the Modsy team looked at them.

So far, I have purchased three items for the den and plan to purchase more items over time. But the small changes I’ve been able to make there without much of an investment have been really wonderful. Just rearranging the room the way the Modsy team suggested made a huge difference without purchasing a single thing. My husband came home to the new arrangement in the den and said “wow, the couch looks great there!” In 19 years, it never occurred to us to pull the couch into the middle of the room until Modsy.

And In my son’s room, moving the bed away from under the window (a design tenet that I thought was taboo to break) and purchasing the shelves from CB2 that somehow looked both less conspicuous and held more books, made a huge difference.

I now go in that room sometimes to sit and read alone and in the 19 years we’ve lived here I have never done that.  In my son’s bedroom I had this huge framed keepsake that was my father’s that I had no idea what to do with. I figured I’d just have to sacrifice a wall, but the Modsy team suggested hanging it lower on the wall and way off center so I can still hang more on that wall if I ever want to. Again, brilliant! And something I would never have thought of.

I have used the exact arrangement suggested in the two projects (den and bedroom).

Modsy has been absolutely user-friendly and the best tool I’ve found to help me decorate my home. I don’t know how you’re able to offer such a thoughtful, personalized service for such a low price, but I’m really thankful I’ve found Modsy!

And the customer service has been incredible. I’ve dealt with four people now at Modsy and each person has conveyed the attitude that my home and project is really important to them. Anytime I’ve had a question, your amazing customer service team gets back to me within hours—even on the weekend! It honestly feels like there’s a team of people there who truly care about the design of my home and my experience as a Modsy client. And all for $69! The one time I hired a “real” interior designer to come into my home and help me wasn’t nearly as effective as Modsy has been (and she was a lot more expensive!).

We’re having our kitchen and living room opened up in August and once that’s done I’ll be asking Modsy for assistance with our living room!

Reinventing Your Kid’s Old Bedroom: How two empty nesters transformed their space

Trying to design a brand new space can certainly be challenging, but sometimes it can be just as hard reimagining a room you’ve had arranged a certain way for years and years.

This was the case for one of our earliest Modsy users, Dorene. Her son, Evan, was well into his college years when she decided it was about time to shed his youthful bedroom décor and recreate the room as something she and her husband could actually use. Dorene chose to turn the space into a nice guest room, a space where friends and family could comfortably stay when visiting their home.  There was the obvious need to upgrade the bed from a twin to a queen, but beyond that she struggled to figure out how to arrange everything in the space and decide which furniture to get rid of and to keep. After using that room for over 20 years as her son’s bedroom, it was difficult to truly visualize it in a new way.

That’s where Modsy came in. Using Modsy, Dorene was able to see her son’s bedroom fully transformed into the elegant guest room that she had only been imagining.  “I was actually thinking about keeping all the furniture and putting the bed in a different place,” Dorene explained. Seeing the Modsy designs, she decided to let go of most of the existing furniture, keeping only the armoire, and to position the bed in the same way as the Modsy design.  “I realized the way I was envisioning the room was not really ideal. Seeing the design ahead of time was so helpful in figuring out the best layout for the small room.”

As hard as it is to see your kids grow up and move away from home, don’t let their rooms remain relics of their childhood’s past for too long – give that room a new life! Make it a lovely guest room (where they can of course come home to visit every weekend), maybe a library, or a home office. Once Modsy shows you how that room can be transformed, it’ll be hard to resist.
