We’re big fans of the earth here at Modsy. Our mission is to help people create better designed environments so that they can lead happier lives. And, as home to all of us, we are firm believers in keeping our planet healthy and happy.
Unfortunately, it remains a sad fact that the furniture industry is a large contributor to pollution. Each year over 9.7 million tons of furniture will go to the landfill and is responsible for producing 32.1 million metric tons of carbon dioxide.
So what’s an earth-loving person to do? Here are 3 ways to help reduce waste from furniture this Earth day, and every day!
Shop with sustainability in mind
A lot of furniture companies are aware of the impact their products have on the environment and are making strides to reduce their carbon footprint and offer more sustainable products.
At Modsy, we’re excited to continue partnering with companies that value sustainability as much as we do. We work with brands like West Elm, which is committed to using sustainably sourced materials, and our own Ravine Home, where we use recycled materials in all of our products.
Invest in longevity
Instead of the buy-replace-repeat approach to home decor, if you have the cash consider investing in fewer pieces that will last.
This not only helps keep more furniture out of landfills, it’s also great for your wallet! Instead of shelling out money for a new coffee table or rug every six months, you can invest in a piece that will last you years (decades, even!) from the get-go.
Investing in quality is also great even if you plan to only use it for a short time. Unlike cheaper furniture, these pieces will retain their value over time and you can recoup a significant portion of the original price later.
The great part of shopping higher quality furniture is that you don’t have to assemble it when it arrives. A lot of less expensive options ship in a flat pack, meaning you get to enjoy the task of assembling it at home. This is such a notoriously painful process that most people end up outsourcing it to third parties, which can quickly add up, both in money and cost to your sanity.
Don’t be afraid of used furniture
If you can’t afford to invest in a new sofa, no matter how sustainable it is, consider shopping second hand! You can get awesome one-of-a-kind vintage pieces and even find name brand items for a fraction of their original price.
Check out your local flea market, estate sales, or second hand stores. There are also a myriad of marketplace apps designed to make buying and selling used items easy and convenient.
Not sure how to make a second-hand piece work in your design? We can help! Send your Modsy designer a few photos and the dimensions of your piece and we’ll build a 3D model of it and include it in your design.
Our goal is to make shopping for your home and practicing sustainability as mutually inclusive as possible. Together, we can all take steps to lessening our impact on the environment and create beautiful homes we love. Happy Earth Day!
