Bringing Hygge to Your Bedroom

Hygge, the Danish concept of living cozily, is the talk of the town last Winter. More than a way to decorate your home, hygge (pronounced hoo-gah) is about slowing down, taking stock, and creating a sense of comfort and simplicity. Plush sofas, pillows galore, natural materials, and softly glowing candles are key to building your perfect hygge hideaway.

To help turn your home into a cozy, warm escape, read on to learn how we transformed this simple studio apartment into the perfect hygge hideaway.

How to Get the Hygge Look:

hygge bedroom

Build a simple base:

Start with the largest pieces of furniture in the room. Your bed or sofa lay the foundation of your design, so look for pieces with clean lines to let the accessories shine. We like the Piper Bed Frame from Room & Board and the Modular Cloud Sofa from Restoration Hardware.

Keep it neutral:

Hygge is all about keeping it calm. Limit colors to the accessories and opt for soft shades of beige, cream, grey, and brown.

Go natural:

Organic pieces give texture to your environment and lend warmth to the space. Look for jute, animal hide, unfinished woods, wool, and sheepskin. We love the Natural Cowhide Rug (Cowhide Imports) and the Acacia Storage Bench (CB2).

Add texture:

Now it’s time for the fun part, let’s add some texture to the mix. Look for chunky, fluffy, soft… in a variety of fabrics and materials like a palooza of patterned pillows that are scattered throughout the room (even on the floor). Artwork can add texture too! We chose pieces with organic patterns, like the Peaceful Dot series from Natural Curiosities. Even the Woven Wall Decor above the bed (Urban Outfitters) adds a textural pop with its woven nubby wool.

Layer it up:

Our final tip for getting your hygge on, is to pile on layers. Layer rugs, pillows, and artwork everywhere to give your space texture and coziness. We like the pop of pattern the Boldstripe Dhurrie Rug (Anthropologie) gives layered on the Chunky Wool & Jute Rug (Pottery Barn)

Now all that’s left is to light some candles, brew up some coffee or tea, and slip into your comfiest PJ’s. Welcome to your hygge-filled home! We hope you never want to leave.

3 Ways to Style Your Nightstand: Bring Some Style to Your Bedroom

styling your nightstand

Whether you have one or two, a well-styled nightstand is a surefire way to make your bedroom feel personal and put-together. To help you get inspired to design yours, we challenged our designers to take one nightstand and style it three ways.

We chose one of our favorite nightstands as a base: the Audrey Nightstand from West Elm. We love the Mid-Century shape and the textured front. It is the perfect combo of retro and modern! The two roomy drawers are great for hiding midnight snack wrappers, tangled electrical cords, and that retainer you never wear.

Here’s our three favorite ideas for styling your nightstand:

Mid-Century Flair

style your nightstand

Geometric shapes, organic materials, and neutral colors make this one nightstand perfect for Mid-Century Modern enthusiasts. The geometric details on the Audrey Nightstand pair perfectly with the geometry of the Mason Table Lamp. The Sum Total artwork also brings a signature, mid-century graphic pop to the design.

Stylist Tip: Our rule of thumb for styling surfaces, is to think in threes. This brings both balance and variation to the scene, and makes our eye happy when we look at it. Try picking objects with various heights, such as vases for flowers and trays to hold your odds and ends.

Bohemian Chic

style your nightstand

For those who like a clean and earthy look, style your nightstand with a fresh and eclectic feel. The unfinished texture of the lamp harmonizes with the other natural elements in the scene, such as the Ibex Sculpture .

Stylist Tip: Use your lamp to help determine how high to hang your artwork. Because this lamp is taller, the Blue Cactus artwork is hung lower to balance the composition. Don’t be afraid to hang your artwork off-center if you want a more eclectic look!

Graphic and Glamorous

style your nightstand

Full of statement pieces, this more glamorous design is full of graphic patterns and gold accents. The stripes in the Changes Rug pull in the graphic lines of the Naomi Campbell artwork for a unified space. The gold accents in the accessory pieces bring out the finishes of the Audrey nightstand, pushing the look more Glam!

Stylist Tip: For a chic and unexpected twist, prop your artwork against the wall on the floor next to your nightstand.

Decor Inspiration: 7 Ideas for Styling Your Credenza

Historically, a dining room staple used to serve food and display fine china, credenzas are a now favorite storage piece that can be used in almost any room of the house.

Whether you call it a credenza, sideboard, or even a buffet, these enclosed storage pieces are great for stashing clutter. They are also give you an opportunity to create a design “moment” in your home.

But you don’t need professional styling chops to turn your credenza in to an amazing focal point. Learn a few of our Modsy designers’ favorite styling tricks and get inspired by these seven creative credenzas below.

1. Elegant and Formal

If your style leans towards the classic or traditional, try a symmetrical composition for your credenza.

Start with a pair of matching lamps placed on each end, and arrange a few accessories in the middle. Center a large artwork above to create the pyramidal composition that draws the eye skyward.

2. Mirror Mirror

Looking for the perfect place to hang a mirror? Why not try it right above your credenza.

This is a great option for any space, but works particularly well in entryways. Create an easy place for last-minute outfit checks on the way out the door, and use the surface as a storage space for your keys, mail, or wallet.

This is also a great solve for small spaces, as mirrors bounce light around and will make your room seem more open and airy.

3. TV Time

Many living and family rooms just wouldn’t be complete without the TV. If you’re looking for a more stylish set up for your Sunday football gatherings or family movie nights, consider mounting your TV above your credenza.

Don’t be afraid to display a few small objects on top – just be sure to tuck them to the sides so they don’t block the view!

4. Making a Statement

If you have one large piece of art to put on display, consider hanging it above your credenza for a dramatic focal point.

Unsure about sizing? A good rule of thumb is to select a piece that is about two-thirds the width of your credenza, like this artwork above. This helps draw the eye up, and makes for a balanced composition.

Try placing a few taller objects on the sides of your artwork for some extra visual intrigue. A single lamp on one side is perfectly balanced by a trio of geometric candlesticks on the other.

5. Gallery Wall

Another great way to make a visual statement above your credenza is with a gallery wall.

There are no rules when it comes to gallery walls, but an easy way to get started is to decide on a theme or color palette that will unify all the pieces you choose.

For a more traditional look, opt for pieces all the same size. If you prefer something more unique, try mix-and-matching different sizes and frames for your artworks.

6. Botanical Tapestry

Another option for crowning your credenza is to hang a tapestry. Visually lighter, and less formal than a framed artwork, this is a great way to show off a more eclectic style.

Opt for some neutral accessories below to let your tapestry shine. Try placing the tallest pieces on the edges and layering in smaller objects towards the center.

7. Asymmetric and Eclectic

The textured wood front of this credenza makes it a work of art in and of itself. Let it be the star by choosing more neutral accessories that won’t compete with it.

We love the off-centered mirror here, which adds an extra note of eclecticism to the mix. If you try this at home, place a taller vase or lamp on the other side, to balance out the look.

The Naturalist’s Interior: Designing a Minimal Bohemian Living Room

Naturalist Living Room Collection

Warm, calming, and eclectic, this living room is the naturalist retreat you’ve been searching for. Come lounge around on a patterned dhurrie settee or plop down on the floor with some pillows; this space is for those of you looking for a way to satisfy your minimal and bohemian cravings.

Get the Minimal Bohemian Look:

Neutral Color Palette:

Lay the foundation of your naturalist abode with a neutral color palette. Opt for whites, beiges, and browns to create a warm and calming space.

  • We started with a coat of Decorator’s White (Benjamin Moore) to let the unique architecture of our space shine.

Natural Materials:

Incorporate natural materials to enhance your living room’s naturalist vibe. Choose pieces that use raw or unfinished materials like jute, rattan, wood, leather, stone, or shell.

Naturalist Living Room Collection

Play with Texture & Pattern:

Amp up the bohemian feel by incorporating texture and pattern. Playing with these elements will give your living room that essential eclectic charm.

  • Bring a welcome pop of pattern to your space with the Bridal Rug Settee (Wisteria). We also love the honeycomb pattern and translucent glow of Serena & Lily’s Capiz Honeycomb Chandelier made with real capiz shells.

Add some Natural Curiosities:

The secret sauce of this space is its perfect balance between the romantic and scientific elements. Equally charming and intriguing, these few details are essential for nailing the naturalist look.

  • We included an homage to one of the most influential naturalists, the larger than life John Muir Tribute Tree artwork (Natural Curiosities). Add a touch of natural whimsy with sculptures and small objects, like our Floating Marble Ducks (Wisteria).

Naturalist Living Room Collection

We love the idea of bringing the great outdoors into your home. As American writer, Genevieve Valentine writes, “Nature provides enough order to soothe and enough entropy to surprise,” making it the perfect interior design muse. So, if you love the boho look but not all the color, or if you like minimal spaces but find them chilly, our Naturalist collection is the “neutral territory” you’ve been seeking.

Inspired Color Palette: The Blush Collection

Valentine’s day might be over, but we are still thinking pink in terms of interior design inspiration. A little on the dustier side, this shade of blush is less sticky sweet, and instead feels muted and moody. To help you get your fix, we curated this collection of products perfectly poised to make you (and your home) feel the blush rush!

blush interior collection

Blush is the perfect hue to give your home a feminine edge or simply add a dash of warmth to a neutral space. Bring on the bohemian charm with West Elm’s blush-colored Sequin Knotted Wool Rug.

Or push the look more elegant and feminine with a blushing accent chair. We have a crush on the Slub Velvet Tillie Armchair in rosewood (Anthropologie). You don’t even have to wander too far out of neutral territory with muted blush pieces like Serena & Lily’s Whipstitch Mohair Throw.

We curated a collection inspired by this trend that makes us blush. If you are looking to warm up a neutral palette, jazz up a sophisticated space, or are simply in search of a relaxing place to rosé all day, we’ve curated this collection just for you!

Boho Glam Wonderland: Give Your Hollywood Glam Living Room a Bohemian Twist

Have you ever walked into a room and wanted to touch everything? That’s how we feel about this India Mahdavi-worthy living room, that’s full of luscious textures, earthy colors, and sumptuous materials. The result is a boho glam wonderland!

Boho Glam Living Room

Check out the shopping list below, with 100% real (and affordable) products and take a peek at our cheat sheet to learn how to get the look.

How you can get the boho glam look:

space_5257_design_1_modcam_vertical_000_002-copy

  • Start with materials: The key to this look is the combination of organic and luxurious materials. Soft leather, stone, sheepskin, velvet, and shiny gold are your friends.

  • Make an understated statement: Nix the frills of Hollywood Glam and say “no thanks” to button tufting, sparkles, and exaggerated patterns. Instead, let the materials shine by choosing pieces with sleek forms.

Boho Glam Living Room

  • Add natural textures: Emphasize the bohemian element of your space with textures that showcase nature. We love the Sandstone Pattern wall art from Williams Sonoma, and have our eye fixed on the watery surface of the Ripple Media Console (CB2).

  • Curate an earthy color palette: If you can’t find it in nature, you won’t find it in this living room (looking at you hot pink!). We started with a base of charcoal and stoney greys and then layered in earthy hues. Think jewel tones, and seek out those saturated colors that will give your space a bohemian edge.

Boho Glam Living Room

  • Top it off with some whimsy: Create a playful space with whimsical accessories. Look for artwork that is a bit tongue-in-cheek for some great conversation pieces (as if this living room isn’t enough already).
    • We love the playful look of Anthropologie’s Ibex Side Table, and got a good laugh out of Alex Kostinskyi’s Knuba print (Artfully Walls).

Voila! Your living room is now the perfect balance of bohemian, glamorous, and minimal – oh my!
