7 Tips for Designing an Eclectic Bedroom That’s Curated, Not Chaotic

Eclectic style is a fun way to mix together looks and materials and create a style that’s all your own. But it can be a tricky look to ace, as eclectic design can easily turn into cluttered chaos.

At its best, eclectic interior design is a style that mixes together different time periods, home decor styles, textures, patterns, and colors—but in a way that feels harmonious, despite the contrasting elements. It’s all about creating a cohesive space. It’s also a great opportunity to let your personality shine. Eclectic spaces tend to lean a little boho—but really, there are so many ways to bring it to life.

We’ve covered how to design an eclectic living room, and today we’re tackling eclectic bedroom design! We love that you can really get creative with eclectic bedroom design and make it your own!

Ready to dive in? Here are our best tips to ace an eclectic look in your bedroom.

eclectic bedroom1. Start Simple

If you like the idea of eclectic style but don’t know if you can pull it off in your own space, our advice is this: start simple. We recommend starting with some small pops of color. Greens and blues are great in eclectic spaces and they pair really well with natural materials and textures. And you can walk them back or forward pretty easily—adding more or less depending on your comfort level.

Another easy way to do this is by incorporating botanical elements into your master bedroom. This is an approachable step into the world of pattern-mixing and color. Start simple by adding these elements through decorative accents like throw pillows and wall art. You can also add little adornments throughout your space. Choose blankets, pillows, or rugs with tassels or poms. Or mix some unexpected materials, like woven elements with metallic accents.

2. Add Some Natural Textures

When it comes to designing an eclectic bedroom, incorporating natural textures is an absolute must. Natural texture adds a dynamic and casual vibe to your space. In bedrooms, we love starting with a solid foundation by getting a texture-forward bed—whether that’s one with caning details, with a rattan frame, or an abaca-wrapped headboard.

Natural fiber rugs also add great texture—and we also love the idea of layering rugs if you like the texture of a jute rug but also want something soft and fluffy underfoot. Use a natural fiber rug as your base, then layer a patterned area rug or a fluffy sheepskin on top! You can even bring natural textures to your walls by hanging some woven baskets and plates for a unique, textural gallery wall!

But incorporating natural textures in your eclectic bedroom doesn’t have to begin and end woven materials. Add pops of metal and glass in your lamps, planters and decorative objects for some sleek contrast to the more textural pieces in the room, like in the bedroom pictured above.

3. Layer In Mixed Materials

Another key to eclectic bedroom design? Mixing materials. In a master bedroom, this can come to life through the mix you choose for your bedding and accent pillows, your rug, a headboard, and even your nightstand and dresser materials. It’s a simple way to create a relaxed, boho bedroom design.

Not to mention, this is an area where you can turn the eclectic dial up or down. You could keep your eclectic bedroom more cohesive and neutral, but punctuate it with some color and metallic moments, or you could punch it up with a wider array of materials but in a cohesive color palette

to unite the space. You can also do this by the wood tones you choose—either sticking with one wood tone throughout or adding in contrasting tones to your bedroom design.

In the bedroom above, we went for an ornately carved headboard to set a boho tone. Meanwhile, the nightstand is a brass and marble combo. We then layered in a leather fringe pendant, a cowhide rug layered with a colorful patterned rug, and an oversized woven wall tapestry. The modern butterfly chair in leather adds some of that soft, natural texture while adding to the boho vibe.

Bonus tip: Cowhide rugs are a perfect addition to an eclectic bedroom. And they’re also a great way to fill in an awkward nook!

With eclectic bedrooms, you don’t have to go with a traditional layout. In fact, we encourage you to try something a little funky and unexpected! Going eclectic lets you break some of the traditional rules of bedroom design and go a little more casual.

In a bedroom, this might mean only having a nightstand on one side of the bed, choosing mismatched lamps, or going for an off-centered gallery wall. Even better: mix all of these elements together, like we did in the eclectic bedroom design, above! We love the trio of off-centered baskets on the wall—it’s so unexpected but really delightful. And the lamps? We went with one table lamp and one wall sconce, which somehow really works in this space. We also made use of that built-in nook as a nightstand alternative. But to keep this bedroom from feeling chaotic, we used a mix of natural materials and a consistent color palette to make it more cohesive.

eclectic bedroom5. Try Some Wallpaper + Pattern-Mixing

An eclectic bedroom is a perfect place to make a major statement—and we love making a statement with patterned wallpaper! You could wallpaper your whole room for more of a statement, or just use it as an accent wall behind your bed.

With wallpaper, you have the opportunity to go as big or as subtle as you’d like. That’s the great thing about eclecticism—there’s a scale, and you can rev it up or turn it down, depending on what you’re most comfortable with. So, if you just want to dabble in the eclectic, go for a more subtle pattern. Or, you can go big with a bright, busy pattern like the one pictured above. In this design, the wallpaper also takes the place of wall art—so it keeps the look a bit more simple!

With eclectic room design, you can also mix patterns and colors. In other words, if you go for wallpaper, that doesn’t have to be the only pattern or color in your bedroom. Eclectic style is all about the art of power-clashing. So, don’t be afraid to mix patterns and colors! Just consider varying the scale. If you go for a big, bold pattern in your wallpaper, go for a smaller pattern in your bedding and rug—or vice versa!

6. Use High-Contrast Neutrals

Eclectic bedroom design isn’t always about bold colors and patterns. In fact, another great way to dabble in eclectic style is through the use of high-contrast neutrals. To get this look, keep your foundational furniture a bit more classic and neutral. A bed in a rich wood tone is a perfect option. Then, add in contrast with decor and upholstery. This is less risky than going for an ornate or textured bed, because you can easily swap it out if you decide it’s not for you. But if it is your jam? You can work your way out as you get more daring—perhaps swapping out a white duvet cover for something darker, or getting an accent chair with patterned upholstery. It’s a great way to flex up and down and let your personality shine!

You can see this approach come to life in the bedroom design above. It’s muted, but the mix of black and white patterns feels really energized. Gallery walls are perfect for eclectic spaces—and this one features a variety of high-contrast neutrals, but in a consistent color palette that helps it feel cohesive. The patterned lamp shade and accent pillows tie in perfectly, but the mirror and bed frames keep the look grounded.

eclectic bedroom7. Mix Furniture Styles

Eclectic style is all about mixing different styles and elements together. And this includes mixing together different furniture styles! So, you could mix a classic nightstand with a contemporary lamp. A glam headboard with two layers of funky rugs. And maybe throw in an Art Deco mirror for good measure! The key to combining so many unexpected elements is to ground the look with a cohesive color palette.

In the design above, both furniture pieces are white, even though they’re very different styles. The orange of the throw pillows ties in with the colors in the rug, even though the patterns are totally different. And the dark wall color creates some of that high-contrast neutral vibe we mentioned above, which grounds the whole space.

Bonus tip: The mirror leaning on the nightstand is an unexpected move, but in a small bedroom it’s a great way to reflect light and give the illusion of a larger space!

Sleep In Contemporary Style: 12 Bedrooms You’ll Want to Doze in All Day

Designing a master bedroom is a fun endeavor that lets you exercise your design chops and create cozy space you can retreat to at the end of the day. And if you want to infuse your bedroom with fresh, approachable vibes, look no further than contemporary style! Contemporary is a look that’s all about relaxed approachability. It’s a fresh and clean style that feels pared down without being too stark or minimal—just the right amount of uncluttered. Contemporary design style is also a great choice for those who like dabbling in new trends but don’t want to commit to something too “of the moment.” If you like the polished look of modern bedroom design but don’t want it to feel stuffy, these contemporary bedroom ideas might be just what you’re looking for.

How can I make my bedroom contemporary?

Contemporary style, also known as transitional, is a mix of traditional designs and modern finishes. We like to think of it as a low-drama, “safer” style because it lets you play around with designs for bedroom styles without committing to one trend or another. Contemporary bedroom ideas are meant for easy living—this means that you feel right at home from the second you walk in. You can mix it with more daring bedroom styles to create a slightly different vibe but contemporary itself is about straightforward approachability and comfort.

This style is full of comfy furniture—you’ll often see plush and inviting designs that make you want to curl up with a good book and a cup of hot tea! Think oversized armchairs, creature comforts like plush rugs and downy linens, and straightforward nightstands and side tables that double as storage space. Contemporary style often follows “rules” of interior design, meaning symmetrical layouts and balanced spaces. It’s fair to say that there is nothing “unexpected” in contemporary design—it’s a sensible style with clean lines and conventional forms.

Similar to modern design, contemporary works best with a neutral color scheme and you’ll also find lots of chevrons, trellis, and two or three-tone geometric patterns. You can find lots of furniture, decor, linens and other essentials for your contemporary bedroom at places like Pottery Barn, Crate & Barrel, and Room & Board.

The best thing about contemporary style is that it is one of the most versatile looks that you can mix with other styles to create your own unique space. To prove it, we pulled together 10 contemporary bedroom design ideas to help you get inspired!
