Bedroom Design Inspiration: 6 Ideas for the Wall Above Your Bed

over the bed decorating ideas

As with any focal point, the wall above your bed is a intimidating design challenge, and it is one that many of our customers have been asking about. We hear you!

Between deciding what you want to put there and imagining if it will work with the rest of your room, you’ve got your work cut out for you.

To help, we are using a little Modsy 3D to “try on” 6 of our favorite over the bed decorating ideas.

1. Wall Hangings

over the bed decorating ideas

Get knotty and add some texture above your bed. We love how these woven wall hangings keep it neutral and lend our bedroom some eclectic vibes.

Snag yourself this wallet-friendly option, or upgrade to this hand-woven wooly statement piece.

2. Print Trio

over the bed decorating ideas

Add a little rhythm with a series of three hung above your bed. We love these quilt-inspired prints, which look great framed or hung with washi tape (a bonus if you live in an earthquake zone)!

3. Vignette Style

over the bed decorating ideas

A spin off the standard art above the bed, we love the idea of hanging two pendant pieces above your nightstands. This option works well if you have a tall headboard or if you crave a little negative space.

Get our bedside tour of Iceland here and here.

4. Go Mobile

over the bed decorating ideas

Not just for your nursery, we love the idea of adding a little kinetic energy to your bedroom. Mobiles bring a note of whimsy to any space and are a great option for keeping small spaces open and airy.

Watch this antique brass mobile spin in circles above your bed. Or, if you’re a purist, grace your bedroom with this Alexander Calder-inspired mobile.

5. Juju Hats

over the bed decorating ideas

These spectacular, eye-catching plumes are the feather headdresses traditionally worn by Bamileke chiefs of Cameroon and are symbols of prosperity.

While we loving showing our appreciation of another culture’s art, we think it’s worth considering the implications behind turning these ceremonial objects into decor or DIY projects.

Instead, get the scoop on this pendant pair of authentic Juju hats here.

6. Quilt to Last

over the bed decorating ideas

Got a large space to fill? Hang an oversized quilt above your bed. These also work well as stand-in headboards if you’re bed doesn’t have one.

Flip the script and make your grandmother’s handmade quilt the star above the bed, or get your hands on this graphic quilted number.

My Modsy Story: Making the Move from City to Suburban Home

modsy storyWhen her IKEA furniture no longer served her family and new home, this New Yorker took matters into her own hands with Modsy.

Homeowner: Marybeth B, City-Dweller turned Suburban Homeowner

Location: New York

Room: Living and Dining Rooms

Her Style: Modern Rustic

The Backstory

Taking the leap into suburban living

I bought a new home two years ago when we moved from the city to a more suburban area. My family and I were living in a modern high-rise apartment and our new home is a 1931 Tudor house that has been lovingly restored.

The Design Dilemma

Figuring out out-of-place furniture

Like most people, the IKEA furniture we had was good for apartment living, but it didn’t work in our new home.

For starters, we now had 3,000 square feet of space to fill and all of our furniture from the old apartment could fit in the living room in the new house. We were ready to invest in good furniture, but didn’t want to buy the wrong pieces and make a costly mistake.

Adding to that, our new house’s architecture is very formal, but we’re not formal people. It was hard to find furniture that both agreed with the interior of the home and our personalities—not to mention visualize it actually in our space! I was completely overwhelmed.

“I didn’t want to settle with a set of matching furniture but I was ready for the house just to be done.”

The Modsy Moment

Nothing was working—not even hiring an interior designer

We had been in interior design paralysis for a year; after one year living in the house, I had 100 Pinterest boards and spent countless hours (days) curating them to no avail. So I finally decided to hire an interior designer to help move the design process along. They gave me layout ideas, some furniture recommendations, and I even bought two rugs, but I still had a hard time imagining these pieces arranged in my actual home.

I read about Modsy on People.com and decided to try it. I took some photos, filled out the Style Quiz, and picked out furniture recommended to me based on my style. A week later, I got the first 3D designs of my living room back and I was blown away by how real they looked. It was awesome! Modsy allowed me to see designs staged in our actual space, and it made all the difference.

“We had been in interior design paralysis for a year… Modsy allowed me to see designs staged in our actual space, and it made all the difference.”

The Final Deciding Factors

Adding those personal touches

After playing around with a few Modsy designs, I came up with more ideas that I wanted to try. I have a three year-old daughter, who loves to climb on things, and Modsy helped me create a play area for her. I also had my eye on a statement sofa, but was unsure if it would work with my formal space. Finally, I was struggling to decide if I should hang curtains above my beautiful stained glass windows or not.

With the Modsy 3D rendering I could literally see these ideas come to life in my home. This gave me the confidence to buy pieces I will love. Now there are a few more things I need to get my husband to agree on, which, for the first time might be easy since he can see how amazing they would look.

Now I use the hours I spent curating Pinterest boards to do things I actually enjoy, like spending time with my family, cooking, and traveling. I am thankful to Modsy for helping me pull the trigger and get on with my life.

Style Spotlight: Mod Visionary

Style Spotlight: Mod Visionary

Do you dig a retro look almost as much as you crave a clean space? Do sleek forms and modern styling set your heart aflutter? If so, then chances are your style is what Modsy calls “Mod Visionary.”

The Mod Visionary look combines Mid-Century Modern forms with minimalist styling and colors. Our most popular style, browse through some of our favorite customer spaces to see if Mod Visionary is the look for you!

Big Space / Small Space:

No matter how many square feet you have to work with, our Mod Visionary collection is poised to work anywhere. Ripe with open-base pieces, this collection is full of furniture perched atop tapered legs to ensure an open and airy feeling in any room.

This small living room looks full and functional without feeling stuffed. The elevated sofa and coffee table create the illusion of weightlessness while also visually balancing the two dense side tables.

This open living room/dining room feels equally full and thought-out. To fill up the larger space, we opted for the sectional version of the mid-century styled sofa, a dynamic piece that comes in a variety of sizes and shapes to suit any interior.

This customer’s space also features our Mod Visionary collection, but it takes on a whole new function as a dining room. The open space accommodates a storage piece and an expandable dining table. Pro tip: place your extra dining chairs on either side of the credenza to avoid over-crowding your dining table.

A much smaller space, this dining room lives in close proximity to the living room. To work within such a small footprint, we swapped a glass-top dining table to visually open up the space and create an uncluttered look. No space for a credenza? A petite bar cart provides just the right amount of storage for a small space.

In the Zone:

Two spaces are better than one, and our Mod visionary collection is ready to tackle them all. This customer’s open floor plan was in need of some zoning to create two distinct areas. Turning the sofa away from the dining area helped visually divide the room, while still keeping the visual harmony of the space in tact.

First Impressions:

Have an entryway in need of a spruce? Mod Visionary has you covered. This customer had a lot of wall space to work with, so we ramped up the storage with a dining room credenza. We also love the play between the geometry of the doors and credenza. Yes way, entryway!

Architecturally Accommodating:

What really makes this style such a crowd pleaser, is its ability to work in a variety of environments. You don’t have to own a modern, all-white everything kind of home to enjoy Mod Visionary decor. A style that agrees with all kinds of homes, Mod Visionary works in contemporary estates to Southwestern bungalows, and it even looks right at home amongst high ceilings and Victorian cornices.

Our Favorite Ways to Style Indoor Plants

One of our favorite tools in our Modsy interior design bag-of-tricks are plants! A true triple-threat, plants bring shades of green, lush textures, and clean air into our homes. We can’t think of a better way to liven up any interior than with a splash of leafy foliage! To celebrate our photosynthesizing friends on Earth Day, we took this opportunity to roundup up our favorite ways to style indoor plants.

Our favorite ways to dress your greens to impress!

Style Indoor Plants

The Modernica Case Study Planter

  • A great way to accessorize plants in modern interiors, or just bring a little flair to a more neutral space, the Modernica is a tried and true option. One of our most-loved products, this bad boy has quite the social media following and truly has the power to make any plant look red carpet-worthy. Seriously, try it with cacti, fiddle leaf trees, or even wear one yourself (just kidding maybe don’t try that).

Air Plants and Hanging Planters

  • Mini hanging planters are the perfect place for our little air plant friends to recline. Super low maintenance, air plants literally eat your dust and are great for small spaces where counter and floor space are lacking.

Try Some Boxwood Topiary

  • Don’t think you’re up to the task of keeping plants alive? No judgment, we have an option for you less-than-green thumbs too! Bring a more formal vibe to your indoor plant party with options like this petit gem, the boxwood topiary. The triple topiary is perfectly groomed and will bring a dash of elegance to any interior. We say go for two for extra symmetry!

While these are just a few of our favorite greens, we’ve got a whole lot more where that came from. Peruse our full roundup of indoor planters below!

Design Dilemma: Choosing the right Rug Size and Style

Choosing the right rug

One of the most notorious design dilemmas our customers face is choosing the right rug for their space. Rugs are an amazing warm and fluffy way to add visual intrigue to any space. They are also expensive and large, and it’s easy to imagine yourself shelling out hundreds (if not thousands!) of dollars only to find you’ve purchased something that turns your room from “hot” to “not.”

A solution for this could be to go out and buy all the rugs you’ve got your eye on, bring them home, and try them out one-by-one in your living room. But if you’re like us and you don’t have endless amounts of money, a pickup truck, and all that time/muscle at your disposal, this isn’t a realistic option.

So here’s the good part. At Modsy we’ve created some amazing technology that lets you try on all the rugs you want, in your living room, without any of that hassle. Along with that, we’ve created this handy-dandy visual guide to help you learn how to pick the right rug for your space.

…The Blank Canvas

Choosing the right rug

Design Dilemma #1: Rug Style

Our eclectic minimal living room is looking a little bare without a rug underfoot. We picked three options that we love and they all seemed to match our style. Here’s what happened when we took them for a test drive:

Choosing the right rug

Moral of the story:

  • With a more eclectic styled living room, all that pattern from Rug #1 feels overwhelming and busy.
  • At the opposite end of the spectrum, Rug #2 didn’t have enough going on and it made the space feel sparse.
  • Rug #3 is our “Goldilocks” – that sweet spot in between that is simple enough not make the space feel overwhelming but also adds enough texture to spice up our living room.

Design Dilemma #2: Rug Size

Ok now that we know what rug we like, let’s try on some different sizes:

Choosing the right rug

Moral of the story:

  • A larger rug (we used a 9’x12’) bleeds out past the furniture and overwhelms the space. Having the sofa all the way on the rug, while the chairs dance on and off makes the space visually cluttered and confusing.
  • The small rug (we used a 3’x5’) gives us a tiny focal point in the middle of the room, and leaves the rest of the space feeling bare.
  • The middle size (for us, a 8’x10’) is just right. The front two legs of all the furniture are on the rug, creating an intimate “zoned” area in the middle of the room.

Of course, this guide doesn’t cover every possible rug dilemma out there. But don’t panic, Modsy is always here to help you move through your design paralysis and help you create a home you love.

Icelandic Interiors: Bringing the Nordic Look to your Bedroom

Recently we’ve found ourselves daydreaming of taking a vacation to Iceland. We can’t stop obsessing over the land of majestic mountains, cascading waterfalls, and the fluffiest sheep and reindeer. And while Iceland’s outdoors are a marvel in and of themselves, their interiors are just as stunning.iceland_3

Images of bedrooms with clean lines, a modern Nordic edge, living rooms chalk full of natural materials and neutral color schemes fill our social media feeds and Pinterest boards. And since a trip to Iceland isn’t in the cards (yet) we decided to bring these interiors to us with our latest Icelandic Bedroom collection!

Here, simplicity is the name of the game while materials and color help create a space that feels both informal, welcoming, and elegantly designed. Read on to learn how to get the Icelandic bedroom look and shop the collection below!

How to Create the Icelandic Bedroom Look:

Build your base:

  • Capture the Icelandic aesthetic by opting for foundational pieces that feel both simple and hearty. We love the clean lines of Pottery Barn’s Farmhouse Canopy Bed frame especially paired with the simple, yet slightly eclectic shape of the Tanah Nightstand (Anthropologie).

iceland_5Create a neutral color scheme:

  • Essential to this bedroom is the connection to Iceland’s majestic landscape. Help foster this in your space by creating a neutral color palette inspired by Iceland’s scenery. We opted for an elegant collaboration of browns, greys, blacks, and creams like West Elm’s Colca Wool Rug.

iceland_04

Go natural:

  • Bring the Icelandic terrain even more into your space by incorporating furniture and accessories made of natural materials. Raw woods, chunky knits, fluffy sheepskin pelts, and braided wool and jute are all great choices. We especially love the Emmerson Reclaimed Wood dressers (West Elm) and the Antler Pendant Light (CB2).

iceland_1

Make it a room with a view:

  • Ok, easier said than done, but one of the most stunning parts of Iceland is the dramatic landscape! Since we can’t really bring Iceland to our windows, we opted for art that captures its beauty instead. We love the photographs by Robert and Tiffany Peterson from Artfully Walls, special shout out to Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier Field and The Black Church of Búðir!

All that’s left to do is grab a hot cup of coffee, a fluffy blanket, and maybe a cat and snuggle up and enjoy your Icelandic bedroom retreat! Staycation done right.

The Naturalist’s Interior: Designing a Minimal Bohemian Living Room

Naturalist Living Room Collection

Warm, calming, and eclectic, this living room is the naturalist retreat you’ve been searching for. Come lounge around on a patterned dhurrie settee or plop down on the floor with some pillows; this space is for those of you looking for a way to satisfy your minimal and bohemian cravings.

Get the Minimal Bohemian Look:

Neutral Color Palette:

Lay the foundation of your naturalist abode with a neutral color palette. Opt for whites, beiges, and browns to create a warm and calming space.

  • We started with a coat of Decorator’s White (Benjamin Moore) to let the unique architecture of our space shine.

Natural Materials:

Incorporate natural materials to enhance your living room’s naturalist vibe. Choose pieces that use raw or unfinished materials like jute, rattan, wood, leather, stone, or shell.

Naturalist Living Room Collection

Play with Texture & Pattern:

Amp up the bohemian feel by incorporating texture and pattern. Playing with these elements will give your living room that essential eclectic charm.

  • Bring a welcome pop of pattern to your space with the Bridal Rug Settee (Wisteria). We also love the honeycomb pattern and translucent glow of Serena & Lily’s Capiz Honeycomb Chandelier made with real capiz shells.

Naturalist Living Room Collection

Naturalist Living Room Collection

Add some Natural Curiosities:

The secret sauce of this space is its perfect balance between the romantic and scientific elements. Equally charming and intriguing, these few details are essential for nailing the naturalist look.

  • We included an homage to one of the most influential naturalists, the larger than life John Muir Tribute Tree artwork (Natural Curiosities). Add a touch of natural whimsy with sculptures and small objects, like our Floating Marble Ducks (Wisteria).

Naturalist Living Room Collection

We love the idea of bringing the great outdoors into your home. As American writer, Genevieve Valentine writes, “Nature provides enough order to soothe and enough entropy to surprise,” making it the perfect interior design muse. So, if you love the boho look but not all the color, or if you like minimal spaces but find them chilly, our Naturalist collection is the “neutral territory” you’ve been seeking.

Inspired Color Palette: The Blush Collection

Valentine’s day might be over, but we are still thinking pink in terms of interior design inspiration. A little on the dustier side, this shade of blush is less sticky sweet, and instead feels muted and moody. To help you get your fix, we curated this collection of products perfectly poised to make you (and your home) feel the blush rush!

blush interior collection

Blush is the perfect hue to give your home a feminine edge or simply add a dash of warmth to a neutral space. Bring on the bohemian charm with West Elm’s blush-colored Sequin Knotted Wool Rug.

Or push the look more elegant and feminine with a blushing accent chair. We have a crush on the Slub Velvet Tillie Armchair in rosewood (Anthropologie). You don’t even have to wander too far out of neutral territory with muted blush pieces like Serena & Lily’s Whipstitch Mohair Throw.

We curated a collection inspired by this trend that makes us blush. If you are looking to warm up a neutral palette, jazz up a sophisticated space, or are simply in search of a relaxing place to rosé all day, we’ve curated this collection just for you!

Pop the bubbly and browse the full collection below, or try it on in your home with Modsy!
