How to Find the Best TV Stand For Your TV Size

TV Stand SizeWould you believe that the average American watches around five hours of TV per day? We’ll be the first to admit that we love TV – here at Modsy HQ we talk about our favorite shows over lunch and we even design rooms for our favorite TV characters.

So when it comes to designing around TVs in our living rooms, we know finding the right setup isn’t always easy. From finding the best layout for your space, to what to do with the blank space around your TV, all those design questions can be overwhelming.

But with events like the big game and Oscars just around the corner, coupled with the fact that you really just can’t enjoy a good TV binge session with a sub-par setup, we’re taking a moment to tackle one of our biggest TV questions: What is the right sized TV stand for your TV’s size?

And because the answer to this question actually relies heavily on seeing the end result, were skipping the numbers, charts, and imagination, and serving up a visual guide instead.

Are you wondering what the best sized TV stand is for you? Keep scrolling to find out!

The Basics

Our rule of thumb is that your media stand should be at least a few inches wider that the base of your TV, so that there are a few inches of breathing room on either side then the TV is placed on top. This will help keep your setup from feeling too “top heavy” and unbalanced.

If you want to place decorative items on the sides, like vases or books, be sure to leave extra room and opt for a wider stand to hold your TV. If this isn’t a concern of yours (“don’t block the TV!”), no need to budget the extra space.

If you have a 65” TV

We recommend a media stand that’s at least 57” wide. We opted for the large version of West Elm’s Mid-Century Media console.

For a little extra breathing room, and more interior storage, you can try an option that’s at least 80” wide. This is also a great way to take up a bit more space if you have a large, empty wall to fill.

If you have a 55” TV

Both the middle and large options of the media stand work for our 55” TV, but you can see that even a slightly smaller option could work!

The large media unit leaves ample room to display a few decorative accents!

If you have a 43” TV

The mid-sized media unit is the perfect fit. Weighing in at 57” wide, this option feels perfectly balanced, and leaves plenty of clearance on either side of the TV.

An even smaller option, the 40” version of the Acorn Mid-Century media console also works perfectly. This is a great option for smaller homes where space might be tight!

And if you have a 32” TV

These little nuggets can fit almost anywhere. You’ll have plenty of space with the small version of this credenza.

My tv screen is 46″ diagonally, the console I’m interest in comes in 52″, 62″ and 72″. Would you say a 62″ would work? Or would that be too large?

    • Modsy says:

That’s an excellent question, Laureen. It all depends on how much surface space you’d like next to the tv. In this case, it seems like you’d have a fair amount of room with all three console items, so consider if there is anything else you want to display alongside the tv, such as photos or decorative items. If you’re going to display the tv alone, you are probably safe with the 52″. If you need more advice on the subject, we’d recommend signing up for one of our design packages. That way, you’ll be able to work 1:1 with a designer who’ll help with any tricky design decision you face.

This is a good guide for choosing the right size stand for your TV. It’s important to think about whether you are going to want to purchase a larger TV in the near future though, this is definitely something to consider before purchasing a new TV stand.
