Bedrooms are some of our favorite rooms to design. Why? Because they’re intimate, personal, and all about you. They can reflect your style and personality more than any room in your home since they’re just for you.
And right now, as we’re all spending way more time at home, bedroom designs are more important than ever. Our houses have become not only the place where we eat and rest, but they’re our offices, schools, daycare centers, playgrounds, gyms, libraries, and so much more. With all that, it’s so important to have spaces of separation in our homes. More than ever, we need our bedrooms to be a retreat where we can relax, unwind, and get away from the frenzy or stress of the day.
But when it comes down to actually designing a bedroom, many people struggle with knowing what to do. What are the things in the bedroom that are essential? What are some of the fun, creative add-ins if you have a little extra space? Function is, of course, important. Bedrooms are for sleeping, above all else! But beyond the basic functions, it can be difficult to know what else you need.
That’s where we come in. We’ve rounded up a list of the nine bedroom essentials that will make every bedroom more cozy and relaxing.
1. Layered Bedding
We spend about a third of our lives in bed—so we might as well be comfortable! Create a cozy, welcoming space with cozy, layered bedding. Start with a plush duvet. We love crisp white—but patterns can also be really fun to add pops of color and personality to your space! Then layer in soft sheets and maybe even a memory foam or down mattress topper! Why not?? Comfort is key, after all. Top off your look with some throw pillows. They can add both style and extra support for late-night reading or movie watching.
2. A Well-Styled Nightstand
Nightstand are about as essential as a bed in your bedroom. Because, when you’re lying in bed, you need a place to set down your phone and a glass of water. But you don’t want it to get cluttered. Keep your nightstand well-styled with just a few other bedroom essentials—like an alarm clock, a lamp, and maybe even a framed photo and a plant or flowers for a personal touch! Plus, it’s handy to have stashable storage within reach. And if your nightstand has a built-in shelf, it’s a great place to keep a stock of books or magazines. 3. Cozy Reading Nook
Your bedroom should be a quiet place to retreat at the end of the day. Having a bedroom seating area that you can designate as a place to read, relax, and unwind each evening is essential. And it can double as a relaxing place to have you morning coffee! It doesn’t take much—just a chair, tucked in the corner. (Though you could also add a pouf for a footrest, a side table, a lamp, and some comfy pillows if you really want to deck it out.) Especially right now, when we’re all stuck inside, having a place to sit that isn’t the living room—but also not your bed—can really make a huge difference for your mental health.
Natural light makes all the difference, doesn’t it? So, welcome it into your bedroom! But your neighbor’s porch light that goes on at 3 a.m.? Not so much. Enter: window treatments. They’re bedroom essentials! Curtains are great for privacy and for controlling light at different times, helping you sleep better. But they also add a lovely textural element to your space, whether they’re made of light gauzy material, soft linen, or crisp cotton. And if you hang them a few inches above your window frames, they’ll also help create the illusion of more space in your bedroom as they draw the eye up. Light sleeper? Go for blackout curtains.
5. Floor-Length Mirror
On a functional level, your bedroom is probably the space where you get dressed. So a floor-length mirror is a must in your bedroom design for making sure you look your best from head to toe! There are so many style options to choose from, too—whether you’re looking for a framed or beveled mirror, rectangular or oval, sitting on the floor or hanging on the wall. The options are endless!
6. Plenty of Storage
A cluttered room leads to a cluttered mind. And honestly, we just don’t need that. Keep your bedroom design feeling zen by investing in the right storage options. Dressers, nightstands, clothing racks, floating shelves, baskets, and bookcases are all great bedroom storage ideas. You can personalize the storage options based on your space and style.
7. A Space for Your Favorite Activities
Since your bedroom is the most personal space in your home, make sure you create some room for the things you love most. An aspiring yogi? Create a yoga corner or meditation zone. Working on the next great American novel or love to unwind with a craft? Tuck in a desk for an inspiring workspace in your bedroom. Have a big reading goal for 2020? Then a reading nook is a must. Whatever makes your heart sing, make space for it!

These can be fresh blooms, low-maintenance succulents, your favorite potted plants—or, go faux if you don’t have a green thumb! Short of floor space? Go for a hanging plant!

Crown your bedroom with some show-stopping art. It’s the perfect way to personalize your space a bit more! Having something nice on your walls that makes you smile will make your bedroom a much nicer place to be. And it doesn’t matter what it is, as long as it inspires you and makes you happy. It can be a painting or print by your favorite artist, photos from your travels, an eclectic gallery wall, or you could even frame your kiddo’s art!
