How to work from your favorite pop culture interiors

The first things on your mind before you start a video conference are probably “Do I look ok?” and “Is my house messy?” As working from home is becoming the new norm for so many of us, you might be getting tired of seeing the same video conferencing background hour after hour. If you’re finding yourself with a little wanderlust, looking for a change of scenery, or just don’t feel like tidying up before a video meeting, download one of our favorite reimagined spaces to set as your background for video conferences.

Want to work from the Friends apartment or from Frasier Crane’s iconic Seattle pad? Maybe you’d like to imagine yourself in Stars Hollow burning the midnight oil like Rory (or eating Pizza and takeout like Lorelai) from the iconic Gilmore Girls’ living room. Or, cut yourself a piece of cheesecake while you work from the Golden Girls living room. We’ve put together a collection of our favorite reimagined spaces.

Here’s How it Works:

Scroll down and find your new favorite WFH set-up. Click on your favorite image (or two or all of them) and save it to your desktop.

To use this feature in Zoom it requires specific settings, or you’ll look like a ghost! Check their site to see if your settings match. Then, make sure your Zoom account administrator has the Virtual Background setting enabled. When you’re on a Zoom call you’ll be able to change your background by clicking the little arrow next to the “start video/stop video” button. Then select “choose a virtual background.”  Click the plus (+) button on the right and add your favorite reimagined image.

Inside Our Nursery Design For RHOBH’s Teddi Mellencamp Arroyave

Homeowner: Teddi Mellencamp of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills

Location: Los Angeles, CA

Room: Blank canvas nursery and playroom

Her Style: Modern and fun!

teddi mellencamp nurseryThe Backstory

Teddi and her husband Edwin already have two kids, son Cruz, 5, and daughter Slate, 7. And now with baby number three on the way, it was time to create more space in their family home.

Teddi was ready to start fresh with a blank canvas room that would become a nursery design for her new little girl. But she didn’t want to stop there. She wanted to take this opportunity to also build out a playroom that would be a space for all three kids as well as a fun gathering place where the whole family could relax and hang out. It all made perfect sense. There was just one thing: She knew she needed design help to pull it all together.

teddi mellencamp nurseryThe Design Dilemma

“We have been in our current home for a little over two years. I never had a knack for design, and when I had [my husband] Edwin design our other kids’ rooms, he chose everything in white,” says Teddi, pointing out how it wasn’t exactly the most practical or kid-friendly choice. “So this time, I thought it would be best to have a pro come in and do it,” she says.

It made for the perfect solution given that Teddi herself didn’t really have a clear vision for her playroom or nursery design. “I just wanted something fun and modern,” she says.

The Modsy Moment

When Teddi turned to Modsy for design guidance, we were ready to help her realize her nursery and playroom dreams. And even though she wasn’t entirely sure what she wanted, she knew there were essentials that she needed, which provided a great starting point for the designs. “I knew 100 percent, I needed a rocker, because obviously you spend a lot of time breastfeeding or just cuddling with the baby,” as Teddi tells PEOPLE magazine.

In the end, we were able to build on her needs and create spaces that captured her modern, fun, and comfy style. “Modsy was amazing in how they just took my jumbled words like ‘clean, organized, and family-friendly’ and brought to life the kind of space our family wanted with exactly what we envisioned together in the process,” says Teddi.

How Modsy’s Designs Helped Teddi

“Modsy’s designs live up to the hype! They made everything so effortless and it was such a positive experience,” says Teddi of the design process. “There was always great energy throughout the whole process. Seeing the initial completed rooms felt so good—and it really gave us peace of mind,” she adds. “It instantly improved my life because it was one less thing to give me anxiety in the long run.”

The Real Results

Teddi has since finished decorating her nursery and playroom. Now she’s ready to welcome her new little girl into her new nursery design. In the final decor, Teddi also included one adorable and heartfelt accent piece. “Slate and Cruz both had artwork that said “You are loved” and I made sure to have a similar piece in the new nursery,” she says. “There’s also an adorable llama that I hope the baby will be as obsessed with as I am.”

The final spaces also incorporated function in a way that serves both children and adults alike. “In the playroom, having a Murphy bed is great because it can also act as a guest room in a pinch,” says Teddi. “I’m so grateful to our designers for getting us baby-ready. It feels truly real now and our home is finally fully prepared for our family.”

“Modsy has been truly a godsend in helping us prepare not only our nursery but our children’s playroom,” says Teddi. ”Everybody is happy and we are all obsessed. The kiddos don’t want to leave their new space. It really feels like theirs and I love that for them.”

Home Decor Tips from the Set of The Holiday – Are You an Iris or an Amanda?

Writer, director, and producer Nancy Meyers is known and beloved not only for her romantic comedies with strong female leads—but for the beautiful homes in which her characters live. From the Banks family home in Father of the Bride, to Erica Barry’s home in Something’s Gotta Give, along with so many others, America has long been obsessed with Meyers’ impeccable style and ability to create movie homes that are basically as important as the cast. Her spaces always have that special something that instantly makes us want to move in!

But this time of year, we’re particularly obsessed with her movie, The Holiday, which also happens to be one of our all-time favorite Meyers films. The film has two amazing females leads—Cameron Diaz as Amanda and Kate Winslet as Iris. But the real showstoppers of this film are their homes—Iris’ cottage in England and Amanda’s mansion in LA.

Love the decor and style in The Holiday as much as we do? Bring some of it into your own home! Our stylists broke down the elements of each leading lady’s style so you can figure out if you’re an Iris or an Amanda, and bring some of their iconic style to life in your own!

The Holiday Amanda's houseAmanda’s LA Mansion

The Style

Cameron Diaz’s character, Amanda, works in the film industry in LA, and her Spanish-style mansion is quite the showstopper. Flooded with natural light, the interior has a minimal, contemporary style, and we’d describe her taste as a modern spin on classic design. The furniture features classic shapes and streamlined forms; no frills here! It’s an elevated version of California cool—and we are here for it.

Shop Amanda's Style

the holiday styleThe Key Elements

For a modern-but-classic home, you want to keep the color palette more neutral. But it’s not all bright whites here. We love the contrast in Amanda’s home, where dark wood tones against light upholstery add depth to the space. Don’t forget the pops of burgundy and green that she (or more likely her interior decorator) has scattered throughout the house.

The house is also full of decorative elements and plants, but they’re chosen and styled in a way that feels polished and curated, never cluttered. Ultimately, this home is minimal but with some of those personalized items, along with a mix of natural textures, it still feels cozy and comfortable.

This Look Is For You If…

You like a contemporary style with classic underpinnings. Or if you want a space that looks as zen as you want to feel! This style embodies a sense of LA executive luxury, along with those serene southern California vibes.

The Holiday Iris' houseIris’ Rosehill Cottage

The Style

Kate Winslet’s character, Iris, is a journalist in London who lives in a little cottage in Surrey. From the outside, this quaint, rustic cottage is dreamy and it gets even better when you go inside. The small space is eclectic and cozy—pretty much the opposite of Amanda’s style and her expansive home. It’s the type of space that you want to curl up with a book and a steaming cup of tea. (Or pour some wine and belt out the lyrics to Mr. Brightside.)

Shop Iris' Style

The Key Elements

Iris’ eclectic and cozy cottage style involves a lot of patterns and textures. Think: granny florals (the good kind), paisley, plaid, and even ruffles. Really, any cozy pattern with a sense of nostalgia will do. For furniture, opt for classic styles, like skirted or slipcovered sofas, rolled arms, and tufted ottomans—all with some sort of applied ornamentation.

To compliment the classic patterns and textures in this style, we love a color palette of yellows and blues, with pops of red. It creates a look that’s both cheery and cozy. When decorating in this style, you can take a “more is more” approach. Cover surfaces in decorative objects that tell a story, along with plenty of books. These could be decorative objects you’ve collected on your travels, found at antique stores, or even hand-me-downs from your grandmother!

the holiday interior designThis Look Is For You If…

You like cozy spaces that are full of personal touches. This is not a style for minimalists, because there’s a lot going on. But if you love getting cozy, surrounded by objects and books that you love, this look is for you!

Happy National Gingerbread House Day: Here’s What a Gingerbread House Would Look Like in Real Life

gingerbread houseThe holiday spirit has taken over at Modsy and with National Gingerbread House Day (yes, that’s a real holiday) right around the corner on December 12th, we knew we had to do something special. How festive would it be to live inside one of those frosted, gum-drop and candy-cane constructed homes? (Assuming the roof doesn’t cave in like ours always seem to do in real life).

Leave it to us. We created the gingerbread house of our interior design dreams. While the walls might be cookie and crumbly, the furniture inside is built to last. Oh yeah, you can actually shop all of these pieces IRL, in case you want to live in a sugary wonderland all year round.

gingerbread house

For anyone looking to live in the Modsy gingerbread house, look for a style that is whimsical and fun. We chose pieces that use the classic colors of gingerbread candy and evoke the textures of the yummy space. The vibe is playful and bright, but not too cheesy—gingerbread people have a sense of style, after all. We knew that the space needed to feel fun, but also wanted it to be achievable and even hit a specific style profile. Many of the pieces are actually named after pieces of candy, which made them feel right at home in this space.

gingerbread house

We envision a cool and trendy gingerbread family living here. They definitely march to the beat of their own drum and aren’t interested in any of those “cookie cutter styles” seen on TV (pun very much intended). The person (gingerbread or otherwise) who lives here likely loves a good vintage or retro piece, especially anything Mid-Century Modern. They aren’t afraid of bold colors and really want to make their space pop. Each piece tells a story; they’re sculptural and vibrant.

gingerbread house

Our favorite pieces in the gingerbread house are The George Nelson Marshmallow sofa which anchors the design and really inspired the overall look and color palette for the space. A few other Nelson pieces such as the clock and light fixtures add to the sophisticated whimsy of the design.

The CB2 Jellybean coffee table has the perfect shape and texture (and name!), along with the Hive side tables and the frothy Miles Shag rug which makes us think of the white icing so common on gingerbread houses. The green and purple poufs are a nod to gumdrops—the classic gingerbread decorating candy.

Stylist Picks: Spooky Chic Decor

spooky decor ideasHalloween is here! We’re getting in the mood with spooky movies and imagining the homes of Disney villains — but we’re also thinking about transforming our own homes with spooky decor!

If you ask us, spooky decor doesn’t have to be tacky or campy — in fact, it can be downright chic! When hunting through the Modsy catalog, our stylists found decorative pieces that are not only perfect for Halloween but will work year-round. Each of these pieces have an eerie edge that will satisfy your Halloween cravings but you don’t need to take them down on November 1. And do you know what that means? Next year, when Halloween rolls around, all you’ll need to do is add a few pumpkins and faux cobwebs and you’ll be set! Keep reading to shop our stylists picks for chic and spooky decor — if you dare.

spooky decorGilded Mirror

This mirror is a gorgeous design from Aidyn Decor. Its lovely gold frame and scalloped edges adds a classical look to your space year-round. But there’s something about antique-style mirrors that scream haunted house. You almost expect to see a ghost in the reflection… For Halloween, just drape it in faux cobwebs and you’re ready to go!

Bust Statue

There’s nothing quite so classical as a bust statue. This one feels like it’s plucked straight out of antiquity. But with its all-black finish, it takes on a haunting feel. Place her on your mantle to both delight and fright your guests!

Creepy Portrait

Classic portrait with a twist? Yes, please. We’re drawn to eclectic artwork that is both unique and intriguing. And we won’t complain if it’s just a touch creepy! With its moody color palette and subdued lighting, this portrait would feel right at home in a haunted house — and in your house, for that matter!

spooky decorEtched Mural

This mural will make a major statement in your home. Its towering trees and endless sky are lovely — and designed in greyscale, it creates a delightfully haunting vibe on darker autumn evenings. With the right mix of creepy Halloween decor, it provides the perfect backdrop for a frightful scene. The etched design and antique vibes only add to the spooky feel. It’s exactly the type of design you’d expect to see on peeling wallpaper inside an old haunted mansion!

Antlers Table Lamp

This gold antler table lamp is both rustic and chic — in the day time. At night, its black shade and antler motif gives it a little bit of a spooky vibe at night. Up the creep factor by changing the bulb to an eerie purple or green on Halloween night!

Skull Prints

Here’s a different take on spooky chic artwork: a pair of pendant skull portraits. On a bright, sunny day they feel rustic and classic. But on a spooky, stormy night they add a perfectly haunting vibe. Skulls are a no-brainer for Halloween decor — but the rest of the year they give off a Southwestern desert vibe, or even something you might find in a rustic lodge.

Brass Hand

We love adding conversational objects to our spaces — and this open brass hand is no exception. This time of year, it offers the added bonus of giving off that spooky, disembodied hand vibe. But the brass majorly classes up this object, so it can be a conversational piece any time of year.

spooky decorRustic Chandelier

This chandelier would be at home in any rustic or traditional home, with its mix of light wood and crystal. But around Halloween, it’s just the type of fixture you might find in the Addams Family mansion! Add some cobwebs and flickering light bulbs to up the spooky factor this week.

Black & White Rug

The traditional motif of this rug gets a modern interpretation with its graphic black and white design. It can lean vintage or modern, lending itself to a wide variety of room styles. But for Halloween, it gives your room a dark, moody vibe. In fact, this rug would feel right at home gracing the floors of a haunted mansion and muffling the squeaks of ghosts and ghouls wandering the halls.

Bewitched Mirror

When it comes to classic decor items, we love finding pieces with an unexpected twists — something this vanity mirror offers in spades. It’s both functional and fun. And it makes you wonder — did a witch cast a spell on this poor duck, transforming it into her mirror?

Here’s How 5 Disney Villains Would Decorate Their Homes in 2019

disney villains homes 2019

Disney Villains image credit Disney

Halloween is right around the corner, and we couldn’t think of a better way to get in the spirit than by decorating some evil and spooky spaces. And while last year we reimagined the sets of some of our favorite Halloween classics, this year we’re looking to some of our favorite villains for inspiration.

And not just any villains. This year we’re serving up an extra special Halloween treat—rooms inspired by our favorite Disney Villains! That’s right, in addition to our cast of princesses, we reimagined how 5 Disney Villains would decorate their homes in 2019. Keep scrolling to explore the designs and even get some inspiration for your Halloween (or year-round) decorations.

evil queen disney villains1. The Evil Queen from “Snow White”

It’s a tough job designing a room fit for the fairest of them all (no pressure but we heard her last decorator died after eating a poison apple). So nothing but a chic and moody Rococo style boudoir would do for the Evil Queen and vindictive stepmother of Snow White.

Shop The Queen's Room

snow white evil queen

snow white evil queen

We were majorly inspired by the Queen’s outfit from the classic Disney film. Her space is composed of shades of inky blue, royal purple, and gold highlights. The furniture has some not-so-subtle throne vibes, and luxurious materials like velvet and marble make for an extra regal atmosphere.

Of course the Evil Queen’s portrait is the only art in the space, but it’s accompanied by a gallery of mirrors and more mirrors on the wall. (Including her magic mirror, for a daily dose of compliments.)

Disney Villains Homes 20192. Cruella De Vil from “One Hundred and One Dalmatians”

She may be evil, but you can’t deny Cruella de Vil had style. And while we’re definitely opposed to turning puppies into coats, we couldn’t pass up the chance to design her home office lounge space. (No animals were harmed in the making of this design!)

Shop Cruella's Room

Cruella de Vil office

Cruella de Vil home 2019

We thought Cruella’s 2019 style would be a bold approach to Hollywood glam (which loves all kinds of animal print). We filled her space with sleek, statement-making pieces in her signature red, black, and white color palette. This is a style we at Modsy call “less is more chic” which juxtaposes over-the-top elements with minimal styling and no-frills furniture.

disney villains homes 20193. Captain Hook from “Peter Pan”

Captain Hook’s living room is a cozy retreat, inspired by the captain’s quarters on his ship. This Disney villain’s look features many elements of American Colonial design with a few nautical and worldly accents.

Shop Hook's Room

Captain Hook home 2019

We imagined he’d use this space to confer with other shipmates, like his boatswain Mr. Smee, and plot their next attack or track down Peter Pan.

We made sure his space was filled with lots of pirate-worthy treasures. This includes a map of Neverland, a telescope to keep a lookout for the lost boys, and a chest to keep gold safely tucked away.

Ursula disney villains4. Ursula from “The Little Mermaid”

Probably one of the most iconic Disney villains – how can you not love a half-octopus witch with two eel sidekicks? – Ursula’s bedroom is a chic, underwater lair-meets-oasis. Her home was in the deepest part of the ocean and had an electric palette of pinks, purples, and aquas.

Shop Ursula's Room

ursula's home 2019

ursula's home 2019

We were inspired by art deco design for her bedroom, which you can see in the shell-shaped bed frame, geometric patterns, and curved designs. We filled her room with oceanic touches, like the coral sculptures and shell art, that give her space an under-the-sea vibe.

Don’t miss the easter eggs from the movie! Can you spot King Triton’s stolen trident, her crown, and eel cronies outside the window?

Jafar disney villains homes 20195. Jafar from “Aladdin”

Jafar may have been the Sultan’s most trusted advisor, but to us he’s the evil sorcerer who tried to seize control over Agrabah. And while the Jafar preferred a decor scheme that was evil and dark, we updated his 2019 style to something more minimal and sleek.

Shop Jafar's Room

jafar's bedroom 2019

jafar's bedroom 2019

The geometric and austere space reflects his evil and cold personality. While the palette of blacks, grays, and red was inspired by his outfit from the original film. The king bed is probably the closest Jafar will ever get to being Sultan. An evil sorcerer can dream, right?

We also had to include some references to his cobra obsession in the space, including the rug and serpentine wall sconces. The bird sculpture pays homage to his parrot, Iago and the hourglass references the time he tried to trap Jasmine.

Here’s How the ‘Gilmore Girls’ House Would Look in 2019

Where you lead, I will follow… This month marks the 19th year since Gilmore Girls premiered and put Stars Hollow on the map. To celebrate the almost two decades since we met the fast-talking, coffee-loving Rory and Lorelai, we had to revisit the iconic Gilmore Girls home and give it a 2019 makeover.

Although it got an upgrade for Netflix’s 2016 reboot, we wanted to go one step further for our this much-loved space. In classic Modsy fashion, we couldn’t resist imagining what it would have looked like if a few more of our favorite characters were in charge.

Ready to find out what the Gilmore Girls house would look like in 2019? Keep scrolling to see how Lorelai, Rory, Emily, Luke, Sookie, and even Paris would design Lorelai’s house today!

Gilmore Girls House 2019Lorelai Gilmore’s Style

Lorelai always had a quirky, playful personality (and wardrobe) that really shows in her home! In her original space, she wasn’t afraid to mix traditional furniture with unconventional decor for a look that felt eccentric and a bit funky – a style only Lorelai can pull off!

For her 2019 update, we wanted to make Lorelai’s space feel loud and energetic without the compromise of comfort. The velvet sofa with a deep seat, and rolled arms, makes for the perfect spot to kick back and binge watch old movies and binge takeout from Luke’s diner or Al’s Pancake World. Quirky trinkets are scattered throughout the space, a result of her impulsive habits that lead her to buy whatever she loves in an instant.

Keep an eye out for some Easter eggs stashed throughout the space, including Doose’s Market shopping bag and portrait of Paul Anka!

Shop Lorelai's Room

Gilmore Girls house 2019Rory Gilmore’s Style

Rory’s space is serene and welcoming. She’s the epitome of east coast charm and her space is meant to reflect that. Her style is the perfect mix of coastal and classic, combined in a relaxed and almost effortless way. The space radiates sophistication and order – basically the design equivalent of a perfectly balanced pro-con list.

Rory’s design is packed with books and includes a cozy reading nook where she can curl up with a book. And don’t forget the framed photo of her leaping off a ledge with Logan and other members of the Life and Death Brigade. In Omnia Paratus!

Shop Rory's Room

Gilmore Girls House 2019Emily Gilmore’s Style

If Emily Gilmore ever got the opportunity to redesign Lorelai’s house, it would look nothing like the comfortable, cozy home from the original series. Always at odds with her daughter, Emily has a very different style that epitomizes East Coast elegance at its finest.

Emily’s style is formal and classic, but we added a slightly modern twist in the serpentine wallpaper, which we thought her eccentric daughter would appreciate. Call it an interior design olive branch between the two.

We knew Emily would insist on a more formal layout for Lorelai’s house, and so instead of a set-up geared towards movie nights, we thought Emily would opt for two sofas facing one another. This immediately creates a space that is fit for conversation, small gatherings, and sipping martinis before (and after) dinner.

Shop Emily's Room

Gilmore Girls House 2019Luke Danes’ Style

Luke’s space, just like him, is all about simplicity and comfort. His look was inspired by the interior of his apartment above the diner (aka his dad’s office), which was full of wood, plaid, and plenty of fishing-themed decor.

As such, his take on Lorelai’s home is masculine and full of industrial materials. Luke didn’t care too much about how his home looked, but definitely appreciated a well-made piece of furniture. As such, his design is full of hand crafted pieces that are built to last. Look for weathered wood, leather, metal, and – of course – plenty of plaid.

All in all, his design is a cozy living space where he and Lorelai can pass the time re-enacting their first date (can you spot the playing cards on the coffee table?) and not talk on their cell phones.

Shop Luke's Room

Gilmore Girls House 2019Sookie St. James’ Style

Sookie, the head chef at the Dragonfly Inn and Lorelai’s best friend, was a fun and wildly creative character. If she were in charge of the decor, it would be all things bold, colorful, and quirky – just like her.

Her design mixes floral and geometric patterns, which speak to the controlled chaos she creates in the kitchen. We thought a palette raspberry, lemon, kiwi and aqua hues would satisfy her wild side and create a space as warm and inviting as her personality.

Of course, we knew if Sookie was designing Lorelai’s place, Jackson couldn’t help but weigh in. We thought Sookie might add a few “manly” touches, like the antler chandelier, to help him feel included.

Shop Sookie's Room

Gilmore Girls House 2019Paris Geller’s Style

There’s no one like Paris Geller… And say Rory’s best friend (sometime enemy) from her school days got another degree in interior design. We’re pretty sure Lorelai would be one of the first client she’d gift her services to. So for Paris’ take on the home, we wanted to bring her intense personality through in the design.

The color and whimsy of Lorelai’s decor are replaced by sleek lines and contemporary forms. The space captures the intensity of Paris and her personality, which is intense, different and cold. We translated that into the space with minimalist decor and streamlined furniture in a monochrome color scheme.

Catch her Yale and Harvard diplomas hanging above her desk, some “light reading” in the corner, and – of course – her copy of The Iliad.

These 7 Rooms Inspired by The Wizard of Oz Prove There’s No Place Like Home

(Photo: Getty Images)

There’s no place like home, right? Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz said it best 80 years ago and we’re celebrating by putting our design chops to the test and creating spaces based off our favorite characters from the film.

That’s right! In the latest installment of our pop culture inspired rooms, we’re exploring rooms inspired by Dorothy, Glinda, Oz, and a few more of our favorite characters. Keep scrolling to explore these Wizard of Oz style rooms and shop the designs of your favorite characters!

dorothy's style wizard of ozDorothy’s Style

Dorothy was a young, gumptious gal. And while she lived a quiet life on her family’s farm in Kansas, at heart she was a dreamer who craved adventure and wanted to explore the world. So when it came to designing her room, we thought that Dorothy’s modern Wizard of Oz style would be a reflection of her roots with an adventurous twist.

What’s in Her Look

“Toto, I’ve got a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.” That’s right, Dorothy. We designed her bedroom with lots of traditional elements that would remind her of home in Kansas but also feel fresh and trendy.

A nod to Dorothy’s iconic blue gingham dress, we – of course – had to incorporate her signature pattern into her home. But Dorothy’s grown up now, so we imagined she’d trade in her dress for something a bit more subtle. We found her the perfect gingham bedspread that she can cozy up under at night and watch the Wizard of Oz in bed.

At the same time, we wanted to reflect Dorothy’s adventurous and feisty spirit (she did save the Munchkins from the Wicked Witch, after all). So we incorporated some modern and trendy moments in her room that pull the space out of the 1930s and into the present. Check out her wishbone desk chair, rattan accents, minimal color palette, and eclectic approach to styling, for starters.

Keep an Eye Out For…

The Ruby Slippers. There’s no way Dorothy would give up a pair of shoes that fabulous. We like to imagine she’d wear them out on special occasions or even as her power heel for job interviews in the big city.

Toto Too. Before Paris Hilton carried her dog around in a purse, Dorothy had Toto in her basket, which we of course included in her room. And like any good dog owner, we knew Dorothy would have a portrait of her faithful pup hanging in her room. Bonus points if you can spot Toto’s doggie bed (you know Dorothy would want him to match her blue and white style).

the scarecrow's style wizard of ozThe Scarecrow’s Style

Dorothy’s first and favorite companion, the Scarecrow always wanted a brain. As such, we knew he’d want to while away the hours in a space that made him feel (and look) smart. To design his room we started with a rustic foundation and pulled in elements reminiscent of an old-world library to give him extra scholarly chops.

the scarecrow's style wizard of oz

the scarecrow's style wizard of oz

What’s in His Look

Since Scarecrow, like Dorothy, was from the countryside, we wanted his bedroom to reflect his pastoral roots. We started with a rustic farmhouse base full of weathered woods, natural textures, and traditional silhouettes. Then, to round out the look, we gave Scarecrow a few more contemporary pieces of art (check out the woven tapestry and cow portraits), that elevate his Wizard of Oz style for 2019.

the Tin Man's style wizard of ozThe Tin Man’s Style

It’s not until the end of the film that the Tin Man, who always wanted a heart, finds out he had one all along. We wanted to translate this character’s hard exterior (and equally soft interior) to his modern day bedroom, and imagined him living in bold industrial style. His 2019 Wizard of Oz style space is a converted garage that combines industrial design with bold pops of color and is where his heart truly shines.

What’s in His Look

The aluminum paneling and industrial elements set the industrial tone while modern, pop art pieces strike a fun and playful vibe. We imagined that our 2019 Tin Man wouldn’t be afraid to wear his heart on his sleeve or show off his inner designer through loud art and bold patterns.

The Oil Can. Because even the Tin Man needs to practice self care and keep his joints in working order.

cowardly lion's style wizard of ozThe Cowardly Lion’s Style

The Cowardly Lion joined Dorothy’s journey to Oz in the hopes of gaining some nerve. Fast forward to now and we think his design tastes would be anything but cowardly. Bold, eclectic, and high-contrast, oh my! Those are all words we’d use to describe Lion’s new den, where he isn’t afraid to put his design tastes on full display.

What’s in His Look

We were inspired by the color palette of the sub-saharan African landscape (because Lions are definitely not native to Oz) and incorporated natural textures and materials galore. From his knit seagrass headboard, to the (faux) animal hide rug, and the woven raffia decorative bowls, Lion’s room is all about bringing the outdoors indoors in big, bold ways.

Glinda the good witch's style wizard of ozGlinda The Good Witch’s Style

If our favorite bubble-traveling Good Witch came to Modsy for help designing her bedroom, we’re pretty sure the result would be all things dreamy, feminine, and ephemeral. For Glinda’s space, we were majorly inspired by her pink tulle gown and wanted to infuse her space with a royal vibe (note the throne-like chair). If we only had a wand, we’d be conjuring up Glinda’s Wizard of Oz style at home asap.

What’s in Her Look

Glinda’s modern day Wizard of Oz style bedroom has a slight bohemian vibe, featuring an eclectic mix of furniture, lots of layers, and a rule-breaking layout. The overall color palette is sophisticated and balanced, and you’ll find rich pinks, neutrals, and gold accents galore. We balanced the feminine decor with pops of marble and natural materials because Glinda wasn’t all glitz and glam.

Bubble-Inspired Decor. While some people might like cars, Glinda’s preferred mode of transportation was by bubble. We wanted to pay homage to that element of her character by incorporating globe-like light fixtures into her room.

Her Crown. Because even a good witch can have a bad hair day.

Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain… But definitely do check out the lovely green velvet ones in this Oz-tastic bedroom. Instead of his own personal bedroom, we imagined the great and powerful Wizard of Oz would have designed his own brand of luxury hotels in the capital city, which inspired this room.

What’s in His Look

The design of the city of Oz screamed Art Deco, so we brought that same design aesthetic to life in the Wizard’s space. From the patterned wallpaper, geometric forms, and curvilinear furniture, the Wizard’s room is a modern take on the 1930’s Oz set design.

Of course, the Emerald City’s best hotel would have to pay homage to its colorful namesake. So we designed the Wizard’s room around an emerald green palette. There’s the curtains, the bed frame, and the accent chair… All of which add up to a room that’s dripping in luxury. It’s truly a horse of a different color!

Keep an Eye Out For…

The Yellow Brick Road. Ok, it’s really terrazzo. But we thought that would be a design trend the great and powerful Oz would get behind. When subway tile finally felt overdone, we think he would have updated his hotel to feature the new trendy material.

You might say she’s evil, or you might say she’s just misunderstood (we’ve seen Wicked once or twice). Either way, it’s hard not to love a villain with style, and the Wicked Witch has plenty of it. Dark and mysterious, we wanted her room to be a place where she could retreat from the world. Sometimes we all need a little alone time.

What’s in Her Look

Her look was inspired by her signature color palette of black and green and embodies a traditional yet chic style. To bring it to life, we paired traditional foundation pieces with luxe materials, like green velvet and black lacquer.

We’re definitely melting – er, drooling – over her four-poster bed frame, and we imagined the apothecary-inspired work area would be her go-to spot for stalking Dorothy in her crystal ball.

The Flying Monkeys. Her evil cronies would never be far away. See if you can spot a few outside her window enjoying a midnight flight.

Her Striped Bedspread. A nod to her deceased sister, the Wicked Witch of the East, we incorporated the pattern of her signature tights into her space. We think it looks much better as a bedspread than crushed under a house.

The Ruby Slippers. Because we thought it was time to end this age-old feud and share the ruby slipper love. There are enough awesome shoes to go around, ok?

What Harry Potter Style Are You? See How 6 Characters Would Design Their Homes Today

There’s nothing us muggles love more than escaping into the fantastic magical world of the Harry Potter series. Whether you consider yourself a Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, or even Slytherin, there’s no denying the characters from this iconic series had style.

So in honor of JK Rowling and Harry Potter’s shared birthday (July 31st, in case you didn’t know!) we worked our special brand of Modsy Magic to revisit the wizarding world one more time. As we’ve done for some of our favorite TV shows and movies before, we couldn’t help but imagine how the homes of our favorite characters might look today. So if you’ve ever wondered what Hermione, Ron, Luna Lovegood, Dumbledore, Voldemort, and (of course) Harry Potter’s style would be, board the Modsy Express to find out!

Harry Potter

Harry Potter Style

Growing up with his less-than-pleasant aunt, uncle, and cousin, Harry always considered Hogwarts to be his real home. So when we imagined what his adult space would look like, we knew he’d likely have taken inspiration from his favorite place – the Gryffindor common room!

Harry’s space is steeped in red and gold, the house colors of his alma mater, and draws on the same warm, rustic, and oh-so cozy vibes. With a large, sectional sofa, his living room prioritizes comfort and is equal parts homage to Harry’s time at Hogwarts and a celebration of the people and memories he loves.

On the other hand, Harry’s office is a quiet place for him to retreat from the chaos of a wizarding household, attend to his Auror’s duties, and maybe even prepare for a guest lecture at Hogwarts. A major upgrade from the cupboard under the stairs, this space is home to his beloved Firebolt among other memorabilia from his childhood and time at school.

Hermione Granger

Hermione's Harry Potter StyleFor our beloved heroine’s design, we knew Hermione Granger’s home would be inspired by her favorite place – the library! So it’s no surprise her space is full of books, books, and – you guessed it – more books. We hope she has a house elf (with full benefits and PTO, of course) on staff to help her keep them organized.

And when it came to her sense of style, we imagined Hermione’s home to be practical with a touch of femininity. Her muggle upbringing inspired the traditional elements, but she’s also not afraid to have a little fun mixing patterns and styles together.

Ron Weasley

Ron Harry Potter Style

Growing up in the Burrow, Ron’s home was always an eclectic mish-mosh of different hand-me-downs that the Weasley’s collected over the years. After moving out on his own, we imagined Ron would have taken pride in his humble upbringings and embraced a similar style in his adult home.

Full of different styles, patterns, colors, Ron’s space is, as such, an homage to the Burrow. But his design feels a bit more masculine and includes a few specific nods to our favorite Weasley. Starting in the dining space (which we’re pretty sure would be Ron’s favorite room), an eclectic mix of miss-matched chairs surround the long table, where we imagine Ron would enjoy hosting boisterous dinners with his friends and family.

We also designed him a special lounge room, which was inspired by his sports “career” as keeper on the Gryffindor Quidditch team. It has all the essentials for entertaining – including Wizard Chess, a beater bat, and his old broomstick.

Luna Lovegood

Luna Lovegood Style

Luna’s space is a reflection of her personality – bold, quirky, and way over-the-top. We imagined Luna’s style would be as whimsical, dreamy, and playful as she is – she’s clearly not afraid of patterns, colors, or mixing materials!

The dark blue walls and sofa are a nod to Ravenclaw’s colors, while the bright yellows and pinks are inspired by Luna’s colorful outfits. Poufs and plenty of seating allow Luna to entertain her friends or lounge around reading the latest edition of the Quibbler.

Albus Dumbledore

Dumbledore's style

Our favorite headmaster of Hogwarts, Dumbledore’s scholarly ways and drive for knowledge shine through in both of his spaces with an abundance of books, collectibles and curiosities. We envisioned him kicking up his slippered feet and taking off his half-moon spectacles to relax at the end of a hard day at Hogwarts. He’d be busy entertaining muggles and wizards alike in his comfortable and humble great room and getting lost in his thoughts (or memories in his Pensieve) in his study.

Voldemort

Voldemort Harry Potter Style

Darkness, skulls, snakes, and a bone-chilling mood make up Voldemort’s home. Just like him, we imagined his home would feel dark, spooky and uninviting and his space reflects that vibe with its dark lighting, minimal seating, and hard lines.

Not a big entertainer, Voldemort would probably spend most of his days holed up his office studying the Dark Arts. As the embodiment of evil and death, look for Death Eater masks, snakes, and sculls galore in his lair.

Here’s How To Style Your Space Like the Homes from Big Little Lies

The Big Little Lies season two premiere is almost here (June 9th) and we are dying to know what’s happened to the five mothers of Monterey.

If you watched the first season then you’ll remember just how gorgeous the women’s seaside homes were. The juxtaposition between their sparkling immaculate interiors and the unkempt, secret-ridden relationships that lived within those walls drew us in week over week.

We couldn’t wait to reimagine some of our favorite homes from the show in a slightly more attainable way. And with Game of Thrones over and out, we can now focus all of our energy Sunday evenings to the dramatic lives of Celeste, Renatta, Madeline, Bonnie and Jane.

Keep scrolling to see how Celeste, Renatta, Madeline, Bonnie might decorate their homes today.

big little lies homes Celeste

Eclectic Minimalism with a Coastal vibe – the inspiration for this home pays homage to both Celeste’s character traits and her seaside abode. On the surface, this space appears warm and inviting, but elements of austerity and control lie underneath.

Bring Celeste’s Style to your Home

To achieve this look, start with a coastal blue paint palette. Mix in organic materials such as light wood tones to warm up the “coolness” and keep things inviting. Be selective in your pieces and look for neutral-colored furniture with clean and simple lines.

Family friendly and sophisticatedly coastal, Madeline lives right on the beach. We wanted to bring that to life through the design of her living room. Just like the set, her bedroom design is more dramatic with glam elements.

big little lies homesFor those who identify with Madeline’s style, look for comfortable base furniture such as slip-covered sofas, club chairs, and upholstered beds. Then layer in the coastal elements such as printed blues, beach wall art, and collected vases for different textures and hues of blue.

For a dramatic bedroom layer velvet textures, mix in metals, and add a feminine twist to the space by using glass furniture pieces such as side tables and accent decor.

Extreme minimalism with a chic touch, Renatta’s home is a contemporary minimal structure, and we think her furniture choices would mirror that style. Each piece chosen for the space is a work of art. Her style is basically a carefully curated collection that exudes wealth and style (she has to keep up appearances!).

Eclectic to the max, Bonnie’s spiritual side and connection to nature set the tone for her bohemian bungalow. We were inspired to create a space where Bonnie could retreat and recharge after stressful events. Our goal was to make sure the space felt open and airy, which is key for Bonnie who practices yoga and meditation on the regular.

Here’s How the Rooms of Game of Thrones Characters Might Look Today

Like most people, we at Modsy can’t get enough of Game of Thrones. With the series finale just a few weeks away (sob!), how could we resist creating interiors inspired by the series? Spoiler alert: we couldn’t!

Instead of mourning the loss of our Sunday evening excitement, we’ve channeled our emotions in a collection of designs inspired by our favorite Houses and the characters that graced our TV screens over the years. With so many colors, materials, and textures – we’ve got dragon skin, icy swords, floral landscapes, and dreary stone cities – we fell in love with the Seven Kingdoms all over again.

But unlike the fictional locations, we’ve created real (virtual) rooms for all your favorite Game of Thrones characters. These spaces are completely liveable, albeit a bit dramatic, and a sure-fire way to commemorate all the fun we’ve had watching the show.

Keep scrolling to see how The Starks, Lannisters, Targaryens, Tyrells and White Walkers might decorate their homes today.

game of thrones interiorsHouse Lannister

We wanted to bring in the signature Lannister golds and reds into this spacious King’s Landing-inspired interior. A desk, sitting area, and grand bed frame are all elements fit for a King (or King Slayer).

game of thrones interiors

We imagined the desk might serve as the perfect place for Cersei to write letters, repay debts, and plan how she will murder her enemies with Wildfire. The open sitting area would be ideal for hosting guests and drinking copious amounts of wine (you’re welcome, Tyrion).

Bring the Lannister Style to Your Home

game of thrones interiorsHouse Targaryen

Although the Targaryen past is far from peaceful, we wanted this room to feel somewhat calming and romantic. After all,  Daenerys could probably use a drama-free place to unwind after a long day fighting to rule the Seven Kingdoms.

Her design is inspired both by her early days in Essos as well as her time spent with the Dothraki. The softer, more feminine color palette mixed with eclectic and industrial elements tells her story of rising to the top.

game of thrones interiors

And no room for the Mother of Dragons would be complete without some tasteful dragon-related decor to celebrate her House’s symbol and her three children.

Get Daenerys’ Style In Your Space

game of thrones interiorsHouse Stark

For snowy Winterfell, we wanted to create a bedroom retreat fit for a King (or Queen!) and their Direwolf, of course.

The color palette, inspired by House Stark’s colors of grey and white, creates a dark, moody, and almost brooding feel in the space (Jon Snow will feel right at home).

game of thrones interiorsThe roaring fire and layered textures ensure this bedroom retreat is still inviting, and we can imagine Sansa curling up by the fire and relaxing after along day. Winter may be coming, but we’ll be keeping warm in this cozy bedroom retreat.

Turn Your Home Into A Winterfell Wonderland

game of thrones interiorsHouse Tyrell

House Tyrell is known for their beautiful gardens and florals, so we really concentrated on bringing that theme to life in this Game of Thrones interior. We wanted the room to feel dramatic but still welcoming.

You’ll notice that there isn’t a shortage of beautiful fabrics, prints, and textiles. The Tyrells always dressed for the occasion, so we’ve woven in elements from their fashion sense into this space.

game of thrones interiors

And despite the fact that it is covered in florals, the space is bold and reflects the cunning power of the Tyrells, and their memorable female leadership. RIP Lady Olenna!

Infuse Your Home With Some Tyrell Elegance

game of thrones interiorsWhite Walkers

All white everything, plush fabrics, and steely blue accents. Our White Walker space takes a cue from the Night King, but is less creepy and a touch more cozy.

This Game of Thrones interior is austere and evokes the desolate landscape north of the Wall. The room is meant to feel a bit dramatic with the contrast of deep dark blues and blacks, mixed with pops of white. But the look is still completely accessible to both the living and the dead!

Harry is known for his wild, playful side, which was our inspiration for his version of the royal nursery. The space is full of pieces that reflect his fun, youthful energy as well as some that feel more masculine and British, as well as a few nods to his polo days.

Surviving Mercury in Retrograde – The Best Decor for Your Zodiac Sign

Mercury in retrograde decorAnother day, another Mercury retrograde. Ruler of the mind and communication, Mercury is heading into retrograde for the first time in 2019 (one almost down, two more to go) and will be back to its usual orbit in late March! Even if you don’t believe in this astrological phenomenon, it’s still nice to have something else to blame for your problems. Or is that just us?

When this happens, life may seem a little extra chaotic, communications go awry, and technology seems to rebel against us. Not the best time to make any big decisions, instead, the best way to survive this retrograde is taking time to focus on ourselves.

To help you sail through this retrograde in style (and with your sanity) we rounded up our best tips for creating a calming space at home for each sign. So read on to learn how to prep your space for Mercury’s departure!

Mercury in retrograde decorAries

Natural leaders, this fire sign has an affinity for blazing new trails and speaking their minds. When designing their homes, Arians should pass on what’s trending right now and embrace what speaks to them (and will likely be the next big thing in a few month’s time).

Tips to create calm

With communication in flux, this is likely not the best time to confront your S.O. or roommate about their poor taste in decor. Instead, try taking on a meaningful project in your home like decluttering a forgotten room or redecorating a personal space.

Products

Keep your cool and cozy this month with flameless candles, such as these from West Elm.

Color palette

Deep shades of red, like maroon and burgundy.

Mercury in retrograde decorTaurus

Lovers of all things luxurious, Taureans are one of the most likely signs to have a beautiful home, designed to enchant the senses. In this time of unstable communications, it’s important for our Taurus friends to have a stable place to retreat and recharge at the end of the day.

Tips to create calm

Use this month to invest in creating a space that promotes self-care, Taurus (not that you need us to tell you that). Invest in a new piece of furniture that satisfies your craving for comfort. Introducing a sense of stability into your life this month will help you feel grounded amidst the chaos.

Products

A set of ultra-plush sheets or super cozy throw blanket.

Color Palette

Nothing says “luxury” like deep jewel tones.

Mercury in retrograde decorGemini

Ever the intellectuals, Gemini gals and guys have a knack for good conversation and love to engage in witty banter. If you decide to host this month, don’t let any technology snafus get in the way of your good time. Instead, skip the bluetooth speaker and go analog. It’s the perfect time to dust off your old record player and dig up your favorite board game!

Tips to create calm

Introduce new a new colorful rug to your space. As someone who despises routine, this will make your home feel fresh and fun!

Products

Vibrant teal Loloi rug, available through Modsy.

Color Palette

High-contrast black and white with pops of vibrant colors.

Mercury in retrograde decorCancer

Cancers are total homebodies and need a space that exudes comfort. With lines of communication going haywire, take extra care of your sensitive soul, Cancer. Make this the month you set aside a little extra time for some self-care. Long baths, home-cooked meals, and cozy decorative touches are all great places to start!

Tips to create calm

Take this time to frame and hang or arrange photos of your family and friends throughout your home.

Products

A gallery set such as these from Crate & Barrel can be used together or separately throughout the house.

Color Palette

Neutrals galore with pops of blue.

Mercury in retrograde decorLeo

Leo’s have a natural inclination towards performance, drama, and flair. They thrive in places that reflect their unique, personal style and should create homes that are as bold as them.

Tips to create calm

Leos will find calm in knowing their space is Instagram-ready at any moment. Style out a few amazing vignettes with your prized statement pieces and invite your friends over to share in the fun.

Products

This Tibetan Tiger Rug adds a fierce statement to any Leo’s home.

Color palette

Saturated golds, cognacs, and animal prints.

Mercury in retrograde decorVirgo

Gentle and analytical, Virgos thrive in organized, clean spaces. Always the helper, if you need an expert hand KonMarie-ing your space, your Virgo friend is the one you want to call. Just be sure to say thanks, as Virgos (like all of us) love feeling appreciated.

Tips to create calm

Create a Virgo-approved, clean and minimal space by investing in an enclosed storage piece where everything can be put away in its proper place. Bonus points for organizing everything inside into individual containers with color-coded labels!

Products

This versatile cabinet from CB2 can be used as a bar or as entry storage. With a neutral wash, the piece feels fresh and clean, just how Virgo likes it!

Color Palette

Serene grayscale.

Mercury in retrograde decorLibra

Social and bubbly, everyone loves being around a Libra! Libras crave balance and equality, and often design the most aesthetically-pleasing homes. We think this sign would be happiest embracing symmetry and following the traditional rules of interior design to create a home that’s as balanced as they are.

Tips to create calm

In an unstable time, put your gifts of balance to use to help you feel grounded. Consider this retrograde an invitation to revisit your interiors and ignite a sense of balance in your decor scheme.

Products

Add a pair of stable and refined table lamps, such as these from CB2, on each side of your sofa or a buffet to create symmetry and balance.

Color Palette

Greens and grays, as they’re the colors of balance.

Mercury in retrograde decorScorpio

Passionate and stubborn, Scorpios should surround themselves with a darker motif – a place they can brood and feel intense (especially this month). To all our Scorpios, look for pieces that help craft a space of solace and mystery in your home.

Tips to create calm

Striking the right ambience is key for these signs who revel in intensity and passion. Look for pieces that shine the perfect moody and mysterious lighting on your space.

Products

An array of scented candles and plush window drapes will let you easily transform your home into a secluded hideaway.

Color Palette

Deep, highly saturated warm tones, such as rust.

Mercury in retrograde decorSagittarius

Outgoing and energetic, the Sagittarius dweller might prefer a more eclectic and artsy style in their home. A sign drawn to philosophy and meaning, Sagittarians should incorporate pieces that are thoughtful and that challenge expectations into their decor.

Tips to create calm

Add new art to your walls this month to inspire your creative side and fuel your mind’s search for meaning.

Products

A piece such as Watching from Minted will let your mind wander as you build a story for the composition.

Color Palette

Deep forest green paired with a moody blush.

Mercury in retrograde decorCapricorn

Classy Capricorn, this sign is known for its discipline and serious nature. People of this sign may find they need a more traditional home that still reflects their personality. As such, Capricorns are the sign most likely to collect antiques and embrace a more traditional, formal aesthetic in their homes.

Tips to create calm

Don’t make any drastic design changes during this retrograde. Capricorns need a familiar place to return to each day, so save the design overhaul for another time.

Products

Add a simple decorative box, such as this marble one from CB2, to help store any clutter without making drastic changes to the space.

Color Palette

Safe and neutral, off-whites with pops of soothing blue.

Mercury in retrograde decorAquarius

Aquarians are known for their independence, inventiveness, and free-spirited nature. They likely are drawn to more modern and contemporary aesthetics as they enjoy spaces that are as forward-thinking as they are.

Tips to create calm

Aquarians are often great humanitarians, so sharing their homes with other living beings is important. If you don’t have a pet, now’s the time to load up on houseplants.

Products

Plants are living too! Layer in plants with poppy colors, like this one with a purple undertone.

Color Palette

Calming greens with pops of bold, warm, hues.

Mercury in retrograde decorPisces

Affectionate and wise, Pisces need a place they can cuddle and cozy up with close friends, pets, and loved ones. They also love to be alone and need this time to recharge. They should create a space that can entertain but also provide comfort when they’re solo.

Tips to create calm

Invest in new bed linens and pillows to create the ultimate retrograde hideaway.

Products

Splurge on a plushy down insert, such as this one from Pottery Barn.

Color palette

As purple is the color of wisdom, this is a great accent color for Pisces.

Here’s How Cher Horowitz’s Clueless Closet Would Look Today

clueless closetLet’s face it: Before Carrie Bradshaw’s walk-in closet, there was Cher Horowitz’s. Yep. Cher’s (Alicia Silverstone) fashion closet in Clueless was literally every ’90s teen’s dream come true. Can we talk about her tricked-out storage system and that outfit visualizer? It was iconic to say the least.

Not to mention, it wasn’t just Cher’s closet, but her bedroom (with the zebra print and oversize floor mirror) totally nailed ’90s modern glam style. Looking back, Cher was clearly way ahead of her time. But it’s 2019 and that’s all in the past now, so… As if!

Cher’s obviously not one to be left behind the times. We couldn’t help but wonder what her Clueless Closet and bedroom would look like today—although we all know it would be major.

But rather than just imagine how Cher’s room might look, we gave it her closet and dressing area a modern day makeover. Scroll through to see how we reimagined Cher’s room for 2019 in Modsy 3D!

The Clueless Closet, Circa 2019

clueless closet

Like most other Clueless devotees, we picked up right where the movie left off and imagined what Cher’s life with Josh in it was like. So for this 2019 take on the Beverly Hills high school princess’s closet and dressing area, we figured it would look largely the same with one major exception: State of the art outfit visualization technology.

Knowing Cher, she definitely wouldn’t settle for anything less than a touch screen system when it comes to her closet. So, we upgraded her boxy computer monitor to a wall-mounted iPad, complete with voice-activated technology.

Clueless closet

Cher’s fashion glam aesthetic was spot-on, so we definitely wanted to keep that as the overall vibe in the space but with a few furniture updates. We swapped in a modern green velvet chair with brass details and added a wasabi velvet bench and a full vanity, all of which give the space the look and feel of an elevated dressing room rather than a girl’s bedroom. After all, Cher proved herself many times over to be stylish and wise beyond her years, so we felt it was time her dressing area reflected that.

A few of Cher’s favorite designs would likely be the statement pieces: A massive ornate gilt-frame floor mirror, a gold sunburst round vanity mirror, and graphic large-scale storm cloud wallpaper, which adds chic impact as a backdrop. It’s not surprising at all as Modsy’s Director of Style, Alessandra Wood points out, “Cher would be totally into the modern Deco vibe trending right now.” Totally.

Here’s How 5 Oscar-Winning Films Might Look Today

What if the Titanic set sail in 2019 instead of 1912? What if the sound of music wasn’t set in 40s but rather today?

With the Oscars just around the corner, those were a few of the questions our design team has been thinking about. The same people who reimagined the Friends apartment and the homes of Disney Princesses, we couldn’t help but wonder how some of our all-time favorite best pictures might look if they took place today.

Curious what we came up with? From Casablanca to The Shape of Water, keep scrolling to see how we gave 5 Oscar-winning best pictures a modern-day makeover.

Best PictureCasablanca (Best Picture Winner 1944)

We imagined Rick’s upscale nightclub/cafe would have embraced the bohemian style were it around in 2019. A Moroccan oasis, it would still be the perfect place for cozy and intimate gatherings (or gambling, if that’s your thing).

The atmosphere of Rick’s Café Américain is as romantic and moody as ever, thanks to the layered rugs and lanterns that adorn every surface in the room.

Bring our contemporary Casablanca look home through flea market finds and pieces that show their history. Anything with bone inlay or rattan will instantly give your space an eclectic feel, and don’t be afraid to layer on the rugs, pillows, and throws. Even mix and match your dining chairs for an extra eclectic look!

Best PictureThe Sound of Music (Best Picture Winner 1966)

From the “Do Re Mi” sheet music to the view of the iconic gazebo (you can almost hear Liesl singing…), our 2019 take on The Sound of Music certainly includes a few of our favorite things!

Inspired by the living room where the Von Trapp family gathers to hear their father sing “Edelweiss,” the color palette comes from the original movie and was crucial to bringing this look to life.

To bring this style to your home, look for classic-European or ballroom inspired pieces. Anything embroidered is your best friend, from pillows and chairs to sofas!

Best PictureTitanic (Best Picture Winner 1998)

If you’re getting painted like a French girl, this traditional-glam lounge space is the perfect backdrop. Our 2019 vision for the set of Titanic was inspired by the first-class smoking room and Verandah Cafe from the original film.

The combo of tropical palm leaf prints and ornate chandelier are enough to make anyone feel like the king of the world. We imagined Jack and Rose making themselves at home in this first-class lounge space, relaxing and flirting, and (hopefully) avoiding that pesky iceberg.

Love this look? Bring it home by mixing classic furniture pieces in rich hues. Play with a palette of reds and greens to evoke the colors of the original set (note the green velvet sofa and ornate red rug), and don’t forget the palm leaves!

Best PictureShakespeare in Love (Best Picture Winner 1999)

Where Elizabethan era decor meets a theatrical flair, our current-day take on Shakespeare In Love is perfectly dark and moody, just like a Shakespearean tale.

Both dramatic and whimsical, this look plays with textiles and pattern and bold colors. A few key pieces include the writing desk for dashing out secret notes, dramatic curtains that evoke a stage, and the swooning sofa for reading love letters (or crying from torment).

For Shakespeare fans, there are easy ways to incorporate this style into your own space. Start with a dark and moody paint color then layer on some rugs. To modernize, pair original antique pieces with updated patterns & textiles and add a touch of fairytale whimsy with a fun sculptural piece or work of art.

Best PictureShape of Water (Best Picture Winner 2018)

Art Deco meets industrial in Elisa Esposito’s living room. Set in the 1960s, The Shape of Water depicts a life of isolation and her unique bond with a mysterious, scaled creature.

For this new look, we embraced a color palette that evokes the moody tones of the film. The space is minimally styled with a few sparse touches of Art Deco and industrial decor. The table set closely mirrors the original in the movie and the bathtub adds an edgy note, and is ready for any aquatic friends she cares to bring home.

Get this look with a moody blue wall color – the foundation of any water-themed space. Mix industrial elements and softer shapes to create a unique deco look, and add velvets and vintage pieces to complete the space.

Here’s How 6 Disney Princesses Would Decorate Their Homes in 2019

disney princesses

Who doesn’t love a good Disney Princess post? From what they’d look like in 2019 to imagining them as elderly ladies, it’s fun to take our favorite characters and imagine their lives outside the movies we know so well.

At Modsy, we love reimagining the interiors of iconic tv shows and movies, and we couldn’t wait to get our hands on the palaces and castles of our favorite Disney Princesses. We tasked our design team to imagine what a 2019 happily ever after might look like for Cinderella, Belle, Mulan, Elsa, Moana, and Snow White.

Keep scrolling to see what we thought the homes of the 6 iconic Disney Princesses might look like today.

disney princessesCinderella

Long after she married Prince Charming, we imagined Cinderella found her happily-ever-after in this living room.

Inspired by her iconic blue ball gown, we designed her elegant space in shades of royal blue, ivory, and gold. While she loves glass furniture (and shoes), Cinderella is chronically late, so we included a gold alarm clock to help keep her on schedule.

disney princessesSnow White

After Snow White moved out of the cottage and got her own place, she was ready for a design upgrade – who wouldn’t after living with 7 roommates!

For her bedroom, our designers wanted to create the ultimate “enchanted forest” escape. This would be the perfect place for Snow White to daydream and find solace from the outside world.

Always the animal lover, we wanted her space to reflect her penchant for nature. Her space is full of whimsical, woodland-inspired pieces that would help her stay connected to her forest friends. As a special 2019 touch, we added a few geodes and crystals to Snow White’s bedside. After the incident with her step mother, we imagined Snow White might turn to mystical powers to dispel negative energy in her space. Can you blame her?

disney princessesBelle

For the heroine of Beauty and the Beast, we designed Belle a romantic retreat that mixes her Parisian roots with a dash of countryside chic. The sofa, inspired by her iconic yellow ball gown, is the center piece of the room. If a lot of the furniture looks familiar, that’s because it was inspired by our favorite characters from the movie. Can you spot  Chip, Mrs. Pots, and Lumiere?

Of course, as an avid reader, we stocked Belle’s living room with piles of her favorite novels. Of course, no Beauty and The Beast home would be complete without roses, which we sprinkled through the space. (Don’t worry, they’re not the kind that turn your significant other into a beast.) Ready to take a vacation here? Be our guest!

Disney PrincessesMulan

Let’s get down to business. Mulan is not only one of our favorite Disney princesses, but she’s also a warrior – two personas we wanted to showcase in her modern-day living room.

We wanted Mulan’s space to reflect her independent spirit, so the overall vibe strikes a balance of feminine and masculine features. Her style is totally minimal with hints of eastern-inspired Mid-Century. The rug is the centerpiece that ties the whole room together, and is both traditional and unexpected, just like Mulan.

Can you spot Mushu in the corner, keeping Mulan company on quiet nights at home?

disney princessesElsa

Disney Princess, Elsa’s adult bedroom takes a Scandinavian chic approach to a rustic look. The eldest of the sisters in Frozen, we imagined current-day Elsa designing an indoor winter wonderland for her home.

We brought her vision to life with an icy color palette of blues and whites alongside mirrored and acrylic furniture. To keep it from feeling too frigid, we incorporated Norwegian folk patterns alongside cowhides and fur throws into her cozy bedroom retreat.

disney princessesMoana

For our favorite island adventurer Moana, we created a colorful bedroom where she could chill out after an action-packed day of way-finding.

The day bed, and wall color bring ocean-inspired vibes to the space, and the room divider is reminiscent of sails boats she loves. Wooden boat decor on the console serves as another nod to her passion and her many journeys. The space is eclectic and youthful – we imagined her twirling about, singing “How Far I’ll go” from the top of her lungs.

classic christmas movies – the Grinch

How The Grinch Stole Christmas

If there was ever a living room designed to make your heart grow three sizes larger, this would be it! Step inside the first interior inspired by one of our favorite classic christmas movies – How the Grinch Stole Christmas!

A room that combines the holiday spirit of Whoville with the funkiness of Mt. Crumpet, we imagined the Grinch would (perhaps reluctantly) enjoy curling up by the fire in his new digs. We stocked the space with a few touches from his old home on Mount Crumpet, along with some stolen Christmas gifts (because he’s still the Grinch, after all), and a few nods to Max.

classic christmas movies – the holiday

The Holiday

Would any post on classic Christmas movies really be complete without a Nancy Meyers-inspired space? The home we all want to visit (or live in), our designers used Amanda’s LA mansion from The Holiday as the inspiration for this interior.

Staying true to the colors used in the film, our living space features a palette of neutrals with pops of greens and burgundies to give it some cozy touches. The furniture feels traditional, but has a contemporary twist that gives the space a 2018 update. The only thing missing? The magical combo of Jude Law sitting on a Nancy Meyers-approved sofa.

classic christmas movies – the nutcracker

The Nutcracker

For our third interior inspired by classic Christmas movies, we took design direction from the 19th century ballet – The Nutcracker. The room is full of classic European-inspired design elements – spy the rolled-arm sofa, medallion patterned rug (one of our favorite rugs under $500!), and damask wallpaper – all drenched in a sugar plum purple color palette.

A few hidden gems for true fans of the classic ballet include a smattering of white sugarplum decor, the grandfather clock, and a few modern-inspired nutcracker tchotchkes. Finally, the art above the mantel is a nod to the famous Uncle Drosselmeyer – the famous character behind the story.

classic christmas movies – white christmasWhite Christmas

The next of our favorite classic Christmas movies is truly to most classic of the bunch. Set in the 1950’s, we styled this interior true to the traditional design aesthetic of the time – think your East coast grandmother’s style.

Really nail this classic look with two spindle-back windsor chairs flanking the fireplace. A pair of cozy wingback armchairs across from a velvet chesterfield sofa also bring this look to life.

The overall color scheme offers a nod to the movie as well as some of the prints, textures and fabrics. For those looking to bring this look into their home, try and stick to a more traditional style and don’t be afraid of too much tinsel!

classic christmas movies – Home AloneHome Alone

The truly Christmas-obsessed will revel in this interior inspired by the classic 90s Christmas flick, Home Alone. The McCallister family lived in a gorgeous early-20th-century colonial revival home, and our designers wanted an interior look that would compliment the home’s architecture.

And in case you missed it, the entire movie’s set was designed with red and green as the main color palette (even down to the kitchen countertops!) so we wanted to bring that element through to our Home Alone-inspired interior. In true Home Alone fashion, we couldn’t help but deck the space out head to toe in classic Christmas decor – a large bushy tree, garlands, wreaths, and nutcrackers galore!

Oval Office House of Cards

Inside Claire Underwood’s 2018 Oval Office

house of cards oval officeThe White House is going through some big changes. Yes, we’re talking about Claire Underwood taking control of the Oval Office in the final season of House of Cards.

We’ve been waiting for the perfect White House redesign moment and who better for us to draw inspiration from than the very complicated Claire? From her chilly personality to her no-nonsense wardrobe, Claire has some incredibly interesting traits that we took care to translate to her take on the Oval Office.

Need help designing your home? Just like Claire, Modsy can help you find the perfect furniture, decor, and layout for your space. Start Your Project today!

Ready to see Clair Underwood’s take on the Oval Office? Keep scrolling for a peek inside!

Oval Office House of Cards

Claire’s Oval Office is purposefully styled with an eye for minimalism – everything has its place, no surface is overcrowded. Claire is not one to go over the top with her appearance and instead chooses clean design with subtle hints of femininity – a dress with a subtle bow detail around the waist, a faint print, or a scalloped neckline.

Oval Office House of Cards

You’ll also notice many mirrors and the absence of personal photographs. We had to imagine Claire would want zero indication of her late husband Frank (she’s not exactly the warm and fuzzy type). Instead, we thought she might choose to honor herself and reflect on her monumental rise to become President of the United States.

Standout elements in Claire’s White House are for one, the Barcelona chair. We think Claire would be break White House decorating tradition and incorporate the Bauhaus piece into an traditional American setting.

Oval Office House of Cards

We divided the space into two sitting sections, similar to a layout used in President Carter’s Oval Office. One sofa faces towards the grand desk, while the other sits with two facing chairs by the fireplace to create a secondary sitting area.

Oval Office House of Cards

Carter employed the layout to create more intimate conversational spaces. But for Claire, we thought this was an interesting way to nod to her “duality” of character. We could see her laying on one of the two sofas, cigarette in hand while devising her next move.

For anyone who loves this style there are a few ways to bring her White House into your home. This look is all about quality over quantity. Find pieces with less “frill” and more structure. Don’t be afraid of buying the whole set – oftentimes this helps to make the space feel completely unified and polished.

You don’t have to be the president to have a well-designed space!

5 Haunted House Ideas, Inspired by Your Favorite Halloween Movies

Haunted House Ideas – Stranger Things

With the spookiest holiday just around the corner, we couldn’t help but get excited by the idea of haunted house ideas (ghosts and witches need help with layouts too!). So if you’re looking to transform your home into the scariest spot on the block, look no further.

Better than your average spider web and jack o’lantern decor, we took five of our favorite Halloween films – Hocus Pocus, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Rosemary’s Baby, Beetlejuice and Stranger Things – and turned them into easy and fun haunted house ideas that you can try in your home.

Using the sets of our favorite Halloween classics as inspiration, we whipped up these 5 haunted house ideas to help you get your spook on in style.

Hocus Pocus

Haunted House Ideas – Hocus Pocus

Truly a Halloween classic, Hocus Pocus stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Bette Midler, and Kathy Najimy, as the three Sanderson sisters – aka a coven of evil witches. The 1993 flick is of course set in Salem, Massachusetts and aside from being particularly spooky, offers a great jumping off point for a well-designed haunted house.

Says Alessandra Wood, our Director of Style and brains behind these haunted house ideas, “we really wanted to create a space that encapsulated the American Colonial aesthetic that characterized the interiors the movie. The pieces in the room are inspired by early-American furniture and the room styling marries the fantastical with the real world.”

The warm color palette, dark woods, and purple lighting pull from the moody elements of the Sanderson sisters’ cottage. Some additional subtle nods to the movie include the eye mirror (remember that creepy spell book?), broomstick, and cauldron.

How To Get The Look

You don’t have to be a witch to love the look of this American colonial interior. There are some simple ways to incorporate our take on Hocus Pocus into your own home. Start by finding a few Americana pieces that normally the modernist in you ignores. Then bring in texture and accessories! Baskets, wreaths, candles… Pile them on to really complete the layered look.

Next, get comfortable with an earthy color palette – rusts, dark greens, and golden yellows all around! Last but not least, don’t be afraid to mix and match. This look definitely has a collector feel, and you’re not going to have the same two side tables in a collected space!

The Nightmare Before ChristmasHaunted House Ideas – The Nightmare Before Christmas

We couldn’t get away with a post about haunted house ideas without paying respects to Tim Burton’s creepy Halloween musical (which also doubles as a Christmas movie).

The interior of this haunted house – like the movie – features spooky, whimsical elements with an eclectic twist. We chose a darker palette with purple accent walls for a true The Nightmare Before Christmas feel. Then, we layered bold black and white patterns with copper and gold accents for a fresh take on those classic Halloween colors.

How To Get The Look

Our number one piece of advice for those who want to bring this look home: don’t be afraid to mix patterns, colors, and shapes! Pull the space together with a Starry Night canvas (Nightmare version, of course) along with light-up spider webs, and a scraggly Christmas tree.

Also, try layering black and whites with bright colored furniture. Or go big and bold with a dark purple accent wall for an extra moody effect. Finally, work in some strong geometric lines juxtaposed with curved furniture pieces for an unexpected, whimsical twist.

Rosemary’s BabyHaunted House Ideas – Rosemary's Baby

Was there any scarier movie than Rosemary’s Baby? Setting aside the horrifying plot, we love this movie for the overall styling and aesthetic of its interiors. We were heavily inspired by the set and filming location, an authentic apartment building in NYC, of the movie. Rosemary’s home was extremely beautiful and created a great canvas for almost any style.

Rosemary decorated her apartment in what we might call a contemporary style for her day (what was the mid-twentieth-century) but made it her own with a distinct flair of eclectic details. To accomplish this look, the set designers paired shag rugs with comfortable sofas in deep colors such as olive and burnt ember.

How To Get The Look

Want to recreate this style yourself? Look for authentic mid-century decor pieces such as lamps, side tables, and chairs. Bring in cozy elements such as a shag rug or sheepskin throw and think about color from a naturalist perspective – earthy tones like olives, mustards, and terracottas for days!

Perhaps the most important element of this haunted house is the lighting. In the film the lighting was extremely moody and dim, which contributed majorly to the film’s super scary vibes. Crank up the spooky drama by emulating the spotlight effect in your haunted house!

Shop The Look

BeetlejuiceHaunted House Ideas – Beetlejuice

Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice! For one of our favorite haunted house ideas, we obviously had to create a masterpiece in black and white. The movie Beetlejuice embodied the trends of ‘80s design with loud statement pieces. This space is truly designed for a contemporary enthusiast!

We took inspiration from Beetlejuice’s black and white suit, one of the most iconic images from the film. We added plenty of plants to bring some life to the room and pay homage to the birds of paradise in the movie, as well as the odd house plants throughout. The dining table and chairs are a modern interpretation of the movie’s concrete high-back chairs.

How To Get The Look

For those Beetlejuice fans out there, look for sleek pieces with contemporary finishes to get this look. Think silver and glass coffee tables, minimal and sleek low-profile sofas, abd graphic patterns on decor.

We love the black and white armchair – it’s such a fun statement piece even if you’re not going for a black/white theme for the whole room.

Stranger Things

Haunted House Ideas – Stranger Things

How could we dare create spooky interiors without paying respect to the newest kid on the block – Stranger Things! We took design inspiration from the Byers’ house, a perfect 1980s home with an eclectic mix of the period’s staple pieces (slipcovers, anyone?). We also wanted to give the feeling as though the space had just been vacated by a group of demogorgon-hunting teenagers.

How To Get The Look

The iconic string lights are an easy element to bring into any home, especially if you’re trying to communicate with someone in the Upside Down. Really want to lean into the ‘80s vibes? Try adding an aggressively floral wallpaper, like the one we selected, and you’ll feel like you’ve been transported back in time.

Don’t be afraid to mix and match furniture and patterns – this look is all about power clashing. Shop around your local thrift store and garage sale for some one-of-a-kind gems to really tie the room together and make it feel effortless and collected.

Here’s How the Will and Grace Apartment Would Look in 2018

Will & Grace season 10 is just around the corner (Mark your calendars for October 4th). And while Will’s home got a refresh for the show’s season 9 reboot, we wanted to give it a proper Modsy makeover and take the design one step further

We’d like to imagine a world where Will no longer lived in his iconic NYC apartment, and instead maybe Grace, Jack or Karen moved in. We wondered how the space might look if Grace had helped with the redesign efforts since, of course, Grace knows best.

Peek inside our 2018 take on the Will and Grace apartment, as styled for Jack, Karen, and Grace.

Will and Grace apartmentJack’s Take

There’s no denying Jack has expensive taste. Turns out he already owned a handful of iconic pieces, like the Swan chair and Nelson pendants, which we wouldn’t think of replacing. In his 2018 apartment, we wanted his personality and style to shine, so we mixed some of those iconic pieces in with new colors, textures, and patterns.

Jack’s original apartment was quite bold and small. To preserve his penchant for bright colors, we painted the space in a coat of Steamed Spinach from Benjamin Moore and reupholstered his Swan chair in an aqua fabric. We kept the fun retro vibe from his original space but amped it up with velvet dining chairs, funky pillows, and a faux fur white pouf.

Will and Grace apartment

As we know, Jack loves to gossip, which he’ll be doing while lounging in the most expensive piece in the room: the MR Chaise from Design Within Reach. It’s a timeless piece that’s extremely comfortable. He also will enjoy sitting around the Saarinen Tulip dining table in the Avery velvet dining chairs, which paired together create the perfect balance of edgy minimalism.

Want this look in your own home? If you aren’t afraid of loud colors but don’t want the space to feel overwhelming, throwing in sleek and minimal pieces into the mix help balance everything out.

Will and Grace apartmentGrace’s Take

Grace has a loud personality and we think she would have brought that into her space through bold textures, prints, patterns and color. As an interior designer, she would have been extremely detail-oriented, especially when choosing wallpaper, lighting, and finishes. To give her take on the apartment a more 2018 vibe, we refreshed the palette and brought in more risky elements, like the eclectic art and printed fabrics.

Will and Grace apartment

We have to imagine Grace’s Modsy style would have been a Classic Collector. All about mixing classic formal with eclectic touches, can’t you see her obsessing over that Tibetan tiger rug?

Want to recreate this look? Opt for bold statement pieces and pair them with subtle printed fabrics. Don’t be afraid of art, and try to incorporate pieces from different genres to really highlight the eclectic vibes.

Will and Grace apartmentKaren’s Take

We mixed a lot of rich colors, animal prints, and velvets to create Karen’s take on the Will and Grace apartment. The space features a glam-forward style to highlight her fierce sense of fashion and luxurious lifestyle.

Karen’s love for the finer things in life really shines through with bold, trendy statement pieces. We painted the walls to Grapy, a deep purple-gray from Sherwin-Williams for a moody, dramatic touch to reflect Karen’s personality.

Will and Grace apartment

Karen would be extra fond of the bold, Green Velvet Layla Chanel Tufted Sofa and Marissa Coffee Table from Horchow and Modern Seven Branching Chandelier from France & Son.

Want this look in your space? Keep it dramatic and bold – just like Karen would! Think statement chandelier, a velvet sofa, a sculptural coffee table… all pieces that really pop in any space.
