Layout Guide: A Small Home Office Designed for Productivity

home office layout ideasIn our “Layout Guides” series you’ll find layout solutions for rooms of all shapes and sizes. Often the trickiest part of designing a space, finding the right layout for your room can be a challenge. This week we’re designing two home office layout ideas for the ultimate productivity zone.

The Space: A small 11×13 home office

Style: Mod Collector

The Challenge: Creating a home office design that includes comfortable seating and plenty of storage. The catch? An awkward back nook next to the window.

Our home office layout idea #1 is all about productivity. This is a space where you can escape the business around you and hide away to get your work done. The double desk setup facilitates productivity even if two people are working in the office at once. One desk is tucked away in the back nook/alcove on the opposite side of the room, creating personal space for both even in shared quarters. Because the desks are against the walls, this layout is better for deep focus and getting stuff done.

Why This Home Office Layout Works

This setup provides plenty of storage, with the bookcase across from the entry and built-in shelving in the back nook. The cozy daybed in front of the windows makes a great spot to take a break, read, or even recharge with a quick power nap.

We also added a large floor mirror, one of our favorite small space hacks, which opens up the room and makes it feel much bigger. This is also a great addition if your home office doubles as a guest room!

As for style, this room is designed in a neutral color palette, which keeps the space feeling minimal, clean, and uncluttered. Accessorizing with textures and shapes give it a cool, eclectic vibe while funky plants add life and pops of color.

  • Need a shared office space for two.
  • Like a space where you can really concentrate and focus.
  • Plan on using large monitors or setup that require lots of plugs/cords.
  • Want the office space to double as a guest room.
  • Love a clean, minimal style that still shows off your personality.

home office layout ideasIdea #2 – Home Office Layout for Collaboration

This design idea is all about creating a home office that puts the emphasis on creativity and collaboration. Built for one person, the floating desk (aka not pushed up against a wall) creates a more conversational layout geared toward collaboration. With this layout, you’ve got plenty of space for seeing clients making it’s a great setup if face-to-face conversations are a big part of your work-from-home life.

Why This Home Office Layout Works

This layout aids conversation and collaboration, but still provides space for independent work as well. It’s ideal for streamlined setups (such as a laptop or old-fashioned pen and paper) and it has a polished, executive suite vibe. The setup here also makes great use of the back nook with a credenza that fits perfectly and extra shelves above that put the vertical space to use.

We also love this shade of sage green paint, which are great for inspiring productivity and soothing the senses. Green is the color of renewal and growth, after all. The addition of color creates a cozier vibe than would stark white walls. This style also incorporates lots of natural textures and materials for an “outdoors-indoors” vibe. And the graphic patterns in the art, pillows and rug add contrast and all-around fun visual intrigue.
