Trend Spotlight: 5 Reasons to Love Natural Materials

natural materialsWe all know that some design trends easier to take home than others. Remember shag carpets? People in the 70s loved ’em, but today you might think of it just as an easy place to hide a year’s worth of crumbs. So when it comes to the decor trends of 2019, we were thrilled to see natural materials are all the rage.

An easy way to lend beauty and utility to any home, natural materials are a trend we hope stays around for a while. They are a particularly great move for the in-between seasons (think that pesky transitional period between winter and spring) and they won’t give you major designer’s remorse in a few month’s time.

These tactile substances – rattan, bamboo, seagrass, jute, and cork – bring new life to stale decor. They can easily make your space feel fresh and breezy, and just in time for warmer weather (fingers crossed summer comes soon!). Needless to say, we love this 2019 decor trend and, to help convince you, we asked our designers to list their top 5 reasons why.

Keep reading to learn all about the reasons we love natural materials!

natural materials1. They Add Texture

Is your current decor scheme falling flat? Whether you love neutrals or prefer pops of color, your decor can still feel blah if you’re lacking this one essential ingredient – texture!

And can you guess the easiest way to infuse some visual character into any space? You already know we’re going to say natural materials! And it’s true. Natural materials are a great way to spice up your current space without changing the style or buying a whole new set of furniture. Basically clash-proof, natural materials compliment even the most vibrant or the most neutral spaces.

2. They are Ultra-Versatile

Sometimes even when you love a trend, it can be hard to figure out how to integrate it into your current decor (we knew that rustic barn door felt out of place in our mid-century living room). Luckily, that couldn’t be further from the truth with the natural materials trend.

One of our favorite things about using natural materials is their versatility. From rustic, to modern, to anything in between, this is a trend that easily feels at home in rooms of all styles. It’s subtle enough to blend in, but eye-catching enough to make your space feel new. Talk about a win-win!

You know the feeling when you’ve had the same decor for a while and you suddenly realize you’re sick of it? Maybe it’s a wall color that’s overstayed it’s welcome, or even a trend you once loved but now can’t stand.

And unfortunately, most people don’t have the time or money to change their interiors as often as they change their minds. So what’s a style-savvy, mind-changing person supposed to do?

Unlike avocado green appliances or velvet wallpaper, natural materials won’t be going out of style any time soon. These pieces can be dressed up or down to work with your current design choices and repurposed in different spaces. You’ve gotta love a trend with staying power!

Spring and summer are all about bringing the outdoors indoors. We all know this is the rule of (green)thumb with plants and flowers – having photosynthesizing friends helps make your home feel more inviting, cleans your air, and makes you a happier human!

Pieces like jute rugs and bamboo side tables can help bring extra nature vibes to your home. This is especially great if you have a brown thumb because a seagrass side table needs no TLC. We’ll take all the positive plant power we can get!

If your grandmother had matching rattan lounge chairs and a bamboo fan, you may remember that the natural materials trend started long before the summer of 2019.

Using natural materials in your space is a great way to nod to the 80s without going overboard (unless you want to, of course). Cotton window treatments, jute rugs, and woven light fixtures are all great ways to get a taste of the 80s.
