With a plate full of cheesecake and a wall covered in banana leaves, we are celebrating the release of all seven seasons of Golden Girls on Hulu. If you don’t know, the show revolves around the friendship between four, single women –Blanche, Rose, Sophia, and Dorothy – living out their golden years together in Miami, Florida.
To celebrate these women and their classic 80s chic home, we gave Blanche Devereaux’s bedroom a 21st century facelift. Slightly 80’s, slightly art deco, and just the right amount of tacky, come take a peek inside and learn how to get the look!
- Bring the 80s back (but not too much): Incorporate the 80s vibe in a fresh and contemporary way with 80s-inspired forms and materials. How about that pink Pelo Shag Rug (RH Teen) or the green bowtie drink table (Serena & Lily)? And remember Blanche’s over-stuffed pink seashell chairs? The pink velvet swivel chair from RH Teen is a great modern substitute.
- Wicker + Rattan = Cheesecake: Not really, but our Golden Girls loved these materials just as much as their go-to dessert. Blanche infuses her space with a tropical edge via the wicker pendants and side tables (both Serena & Lily).
- Go Bananas: The original “jungalow” queen, Blanche sported a banana leaf print on her drapes, walls, and duvet cover. While we love this look for her, we scaled back a little for our modern rendition of this tropical paradise. We used Dorothy Draper’s Brazilliance pattern (Domino) to create a wallpaper headboard, which matches the duvet and drapes.
- Fun Fact: While we used Dorothy Draper’s version of the banana leaf print, the one that originally adorned Blanche’s bedroom was Don Loper’s 1942 Martinique version. A slightly darker army green, he designed the wallpaper for the Fountain Coffee Room inside the Beverly Hills Hotel, where it still adorns the walls today.
Golden Girls was a show about more than cheesecake and banana leafs. It shined the spotlight on social issues of its day, such as a group of women living together for financial reasons (something quite common today). The show also eloquently touched on issues such as female sexuality, gay rights, and life after marriage and children.
So thank you Golden Girls for being a friend (I’m sorry, I had to) but thank you also for championing the message of women supporting women with humor and style.
